Chapter 11. Let's stand up straight!
The police car was a five-seater 212 jeep, and there wasn't enough room for everyone. The younger police officers took Sun's mother and Sun Jianjun back to the police station, while the older officers drove Zhang Hongjuan and her group to the commune health center.
Lu Ye held the child, and Jiang Suining quickly explained the child's condition and handed the doctor the pills she had gotten from Sun's mother.
After examining the pills, the doctor pried open the child's eyelids and shone a small flashlight on them, then exclaimed in horror: "The child has already fallen into a coma, why did it take so long to bring him here?"
Zhang Hongjuan was already on tenterhooks, thinking that her child would be saved once they arrived at the hospital. But she was shocked by what the doctor said. Tears welled up in her eyes, and she felt completely drained. Her body went limp, and she collapsed into Jiang Suining's arms.
"Doctor, please, you must save the child." Jiang Suining was also panicked and could only place her hopes on the doctor. "We will do our best to cooperate with whatever the adults need us to do."
"Let's go pay the fees first." A nurse had already pushed a stretcher over. Lu Ye put the child on the stretcher and went to pay the fees. Jiang Suining accompanied Zhang Hongjuan to the outside of the operating room, but was stopped by a nurse.
Zhang Hongjuan huddled in the corner outside the operating room, silently shedding tears.
“Sister Hongjuan, let’s sit over there,” Jiang Suining knew that nothing she said could comfort a mother’s worry for her child. She pulled Zhang Hongjuan to sit on a bench in the corridor. “Sister Hongjuan, I know you’re upset, but you are the child’s pillar of support and his only support. You must take care of yourself. If you collapse, there will be no one to take care of the child after he leaves the operating room. Besides, the culprit who harmed the child has not been punished yet. Don’t you want to seek justice for your child?”
"My little crescent moon, the apple of my eye!" These words struck a chord with Zhang Hongjuan. Thinking of the hardships her daughter had endured since childhood, she was overcome with grief and pounded her chest, weeping bitterly. "Don't worry, I will never let those who harmed you get away with it!"
"That's more like it," Jiang Suining breathed a sigh of relief, relieved that it was good to have something to look forward to. She took an orange out of the net bag, peeled it, and handed it to Zhang Hongjuan. "Your lips are so dry. Eat some fruit to replenish your vitamins."
Zhang Hongjuan had no appetite, but remembering what Jiang Suining had just said, she took it anyway, broke it open, and stuffed it into her mouth, eating it like chewing wax.
More than three hours later, the operating room lights finally went out, and the doctor came out.
Zhang Hongjuan immediately rushed over to inquire about the situation. The doctor took off his mask and said, "The child is out of danger. The nurse will take the child to the ward in a little while. After another night of observation, the child can be discharged if there are no problems."
"Thank God, thank God..." Zhang Hongjuan's steps were unsteady. She took two steps back and leaned against the corridor wall, covering her face with her hands and sobbing, tears streaming from between her fingers.
"This is clearly the doctor's doing, why thank heaven and earth?" Jiang Suining quickly smiled and apologized to the doctor: "Thank you, thank you so much. You are truly a reincarnation of Hua Tuo, with miraculous healing hands. You not only saved the child's life, but also the child's mother's life. If anything had happened to the child, how could the adults live?"
"It's my duty, it's what I should do," the doctor said, feeling embarrassed by Jiang Suining's exaggerated praise. He quickly waved his hand and said, "You adults must be careful in the future. Don't give children everything. This time it was a small dose, but if they eat too much, it could really be fatal!"
"We've got it, we'll definitely keep that in mind in the future," Jiang Suining replied repeatedly, and thanked them again and again.
"How can you parents raise a child who has been malnourished for so long?" The doctor couldn't help but say, thinking of the child's thin and bony body. "Go back and give the child more nutrition."
"Okay, I'll definitely make it up."
Hearing this, Zhang Hongjuan felt guilty and hid in a corner of the corridor to cry. Jiang Suining did not try to comfort her, but suggested that she should reflect on her actions. As a mother, she could not escape blame for her child's condition.
Having just undergone gastric lavage, the child was still unconscious. Zhang Hongjuan sat by the hospital bed, looking at the pale-faced Yueya'er, and finally felt relieved. Only then did she turn to Jiang Suining: "Jiang sister, I'm so sorry that I delayed your return to the island."
“Sister Hongjuan, you’re being too polite,” Jiang Suining said, feeling a little embarrassed. “Anyone would have helped in this situation.”
"Thanks to you two today, she is like a second parent to you. I will make sure she is filial to you in the future." Zhang Hongjuan's gratitude was beyond words. To be honest, if the police hadn't come, Sun's mother wouldn't have compromised so quickly. Lu Ye and Shen Suining were Yueya'er's saviors.
Zhang Hongjuan felt increasingly frightened as she thought about it, and secretly resolved to remember this kindness for the rest of her life.
Jiang Suining was extremely embarrassed. How did this turn into a discussion about filial piety? It felt so strange, so she quickly changed the subject and asked Lu Ye to buy some food.
It was past lunchtime, and the clinic's canteen didn't have much to eat, so Lu Ye bought a few corn cakes, and the three of them made do with the beef sauce that Jiang's mother had made for Jiang Suining.
“Girl,” Zhang Hongjuan said to Jiang Suining after thinking it over for a while, “I’d like to go to the island again in a few days.”
“Of course, we’ll have to wait until Yueya’er gets better before we go.” Shen Suining had also considered this matter. Although she was eager to know if Zhang Hongjuan was the female lead’s twin sister, given the current situation, Zhang Hongjuan definitely couldn’t go to the island with them. But if they left Zhang Hongjuan behind and went back, they were afraid that Sun’s mother and Sun Jianjun would cause trouble.
“I, I also want to sue Sun Jianjun and Zhang Jinfang! Oh, that’s Yueya’er’s father and grandmother,” Zhang Hongjuan said with a determined look, revealing a hint of hatred. “I want to sue them for assaulting people and harming Yueya’er.”
"This is necessary." Jiang Suining was very pleased; Zhang Hongjuan had finally straightened up.
After learning in detail about the domestic violence that Sun Jianjun and his mother had inflicted on Zhang Hongjuan over the years, and that she had been beaten to the point of fracturing bones and being hospitalized at the clinic more than once, Jiang Suining decisively took her to the doctor to retrieve her hospital records and Yueya'er's diagnosis. Before Yueya'er woke up, she had Lu Ye take Zhang Hongjuan to the police station to report the case.
Following Jiang Suining's instructions, Zhang Hongjuan accused Sun Jianjun and his mother of maliciously assaulting and poisoning others, and submitted relevant evidence. After verification by the police, the two were temporarily detained at the police station.
Police visited Zhang Hongjuan's neighbors to learn about the situation. They discovered that Sun Jianjun and his accomplice not only beat women and children, but also engaged in gambling. Sun's mother had even sold her granddaughter, but fortunately Zhang Hongjuan stopped them in time.
With these testimonies, the police interrogated Sun Jianjun and his mother very smoothly. The two confessed to what they had done to Zhang Hongjuan and Yueya'er. The police filed charges against them, and both were sentenced. But that's another story.
Meanwhile, after Lu Ye accompanied Zhang Hongjuan to the police station to report the case, they returned to the hospital. Yueya'er had already woken up, and although her face was still very pale, she was in good spirits.
Upon learning that Sun Jianjun and his mother would be detained in the police station for the time being, Jiang Suining felt relieved. She discussed with Lu Ye about returning to the island first, and then Zhang Hongjuan would take Yueya'er over after things were settled here.
The next day, Lu Ye and Jiang Suining checked out of the guesthouse, bought gifts such as malted milk powder and canned oranges, and went to the hospital to visit Yueya'er. They also said goodbye to Zhang Hongjuan and left their contact information and address for the island before heading to the pier.
After buying tickets and boarding the ship, Lu Ye led Jiang Suining to the cabin. Pushing open the cabin door, they found that it was a two-tiered sleeper cabin.
"Didn't you say it would only take five hours? Why did you buy a sleeper ticket?" Jiang Suining only realized now that Lu Ye had bought the sleeper ticket.
"I'm worried you might get seasick. Take some seasickness medicine and take a nap, and we'll be there soon," Lu Ye explained patiently, quickly placing the luggage on the shelf.
"Seasickness? Not at all." Jiang Suining didn't believe it at all. She had been on a boat before transmigrating into the book and never got seasick.
"It's better if you don't get dizzy." Lu Ye didn't argue with her and took the thermos to get hot water.
The diesel engine roared and spewed out black smoke as the ship slowly started moving.
No other passengers entered the sleeper cabin, and Jiang Suining was in high spirits. She had thought she would have to squeeze into a seat with someone else, but to her surprise, it was not a seat, but a double room. She excitedly pulled Lu Ye to the deck, wanting to admire the magnificent sea of this era.
She wore her newly bought pale yellow floral dress today, and flew onto the deck like a cheerful little bird.
A number of people had gathered on the deck. Jiang Suining was afraid of getting separated from Lu Ye, so she turned around, took his hand, and pulled him forward.
The moment his hand was grasped, Lu Ye's heart skipped a beat. The soft, smooth touch transformed into wisps of electricity that traveled up his wrist and through his entire body.
Her hands were slender, fair, and delicate; they could be snapped with the slightest force. He was careful not to hurt her with too much grip, but his heart was restless, and he held her hand tightly, never letting go.
Time seemed to freeze at that moment. He passively followed her through the crowd. The conversations and laughter of the surrounding passengers gradually faded away and disappeared. His gaze followed her fair wrist and landed on her profile.
Her long, seaweed-like hair danced in the sea breeze, revealing her slender neck and delicate profile. This was his wife, the wife he truly held in his hands, the one he would spend his life with.
“…Lu Ye, Lu Ye, what are you laughing at?” Jiang Suining led Lu Ye to the edge of the deck. When she turned around, she saw the man staring at her with a silly grin. She was completely confused. She called him for a long time, but he seemed to be possessed and did not respond. She waved her hand in front of his eyes and finally got a response.
The ship suddenly tilted sharply, and Jiang Suining staggered back half a step, but was pulled back by the two people's tightly clasped hands. "Be careful," Lu Ye said, supporting her shoulder, "Let's go back to the cabin."
The wind picked up, and the boat rocked. He was worried that she would get seasick.
"I feel like throwing up." She pressed her stomach and swallowed the acid. No way, could she really be seasick? Her body actually gets seasick!
“I brought seasickness medicine,” Lu Ye said, leading her towards the cabin. “After taking the medicine and sleeping in the cabin, you’ll feel better.”
At this moment, she couldn't be reckless. Jiang Suining was already feeling dizzy, and she regretted not listening to Lu Ye and taking seasickness medicine.
She obediently followed him back to the cabin, took her medicine, and went to bed. She was still feeling dizzy, so she closed her eyes tightly and forced herself to fall asleep.
Lu Ye covered her with the blanket and stayed by her side.
After an unknown amount of time, the seasickness medication took effect, and Jiang Suining finally drifted off to sleep.
Lu Ye listened to her even breathing, his gaze sweeping over her eyebrows and eyes inch by inch, finally landing on her slightly pale lips. She was sleeping restlessly, pursing her lips in her sleep. Only then did he realize what he was doing, and he immediately withdrew his gaze, sitting on the edge of the bed and closing his eyes to rest.
Unexpectedly, the person who came in was an acquaintance, Lu Aiguo, his classmate from military academy, who was a member of the infrastructure engineering corps.
