Chapter 2 Is he proposing?
Lu Ye looked at Jiang Suining with a deep gaze, his voice steady yet carrying an undeniable force: "Marriage is not a game. Since Comrade Jiang has no intention of this marriage, I, Lu, am willing to dissolve the engagement."
He paused, then turned to Zhou Xiaomei, his tone distant and cold: "As for Comrade Zhou, I appreciate your kindness, but please respect yourself."
Jiang Suining was somewhat surprised. She had thought Lu Ye would be furious, or at least question her, but he was so calm, expressing his attitude in just a few words. This man is interesting.
Zhou Xiaomei's face turned deathly pale instantly, her lips trembling as she knelt on the bluestone slab: "Comrade Lu! When you saved me, you...you even touched my body...If you don't marry me, then you're forcing me to die!"
Tsk tsk, that green tea bitch, she really knows how to manipulate people. She wanted to see how Lu Ye would break the deadlock, but when she looked up, she met Lu Ye's probing eyes. She silently took two steps back: Why are you looking at me like that? I didn't save that person.
Lu Ye withdrew his gaze, and when he looked at Zhou Xiaomei again, he resumed his usual cold and distant attitude: "Broken up a military marriage and framed a soldier. This constitutes the crimes of insult and defamation. Depending on the severity of the circumstances, the sentence is three to ten years. Think it over carefully. Can you bear the consequences?"
Zhou Xiaomei's face turned ashen instantly, her lips trembled, and she couldn't utter a single word.
As expected, a straight man is the best match for a green tea b*tch. Jiang Suining silently gave Lu Ye a thumbs up. However, this scene wasn't in the original book. Could it be that her transmigration changed the plot? She thoughtfully observed Lu Ye. This person was even more interesting than she had imagined.
"She instigated it all! If anyone should be arrested, it should be her!" Zhou Xiaomei pointed at Jiang Suining, her voice almost hysterical.
When Lu Ye's gaze swept over, Jiang Suining's moist almond-shaped eyes looked straight into his eyes: "Do you believe me?"
“There is a lack of factual basis,” Lu Ye’s eyes darkened, his lips pursed slightly, reminding himself to be rational. “As the person involved, you can defend yourself.”
His logic is clear and flawless, but why does this rigid, formulaic style just feel so unpleasant to listen to? Oh well, he's just a clueless, clueless guy; I'll forgive him!
"If I really wanted to break off the engagement, I would have just told my mother directly. Why go through all this trouble and ruin my reputation?" Jiang Suining looked up at Lu Ye, smoothed her wet braids, and thought to herself that Lu Ye probably didn't know that Jiang's mother didn't agree to the original owner breaking off the engagement.
Lu Ye's eyes flickered slightly, a hint of surprise flashing across them.
Zhou Xiaomei panicked: "Sui Sui, what nonsense are you talking about! It was clearly you..."
"What did I do?" Jiang Suining interrupted her, a half-smile on her face. "I just happened to be passing by and heard someone shouting for help. I kindly jumped into the water to save them, but who knew they were faking it and then turned around and accused me. Comrade Lu, if this gets to the brigade headquarters, who do you think is in the wrong?"
Lu Ye looked at Jiang Suining. The girl's wet eyes were clear and bright, with a hint of cunning and provocation. His displeasure suddenly vanished.
"Since it's a misunderstanding, it's good to clear it up." Lu Ye's tone softened a bit. "Comrade Zhou, a girl's reputation is important. It's best to avoid making these kinds of jokes in the future."
Zhou Xiaomei was so angry that she trembled all over, her vision went black, and she fainted heavily to the ground with a thud.
Was she fainting from anger? Jiang Suining and Lu Ye exchanged a glance and stepped forward to check on Zhou Xiaomei. Fortunately, her head was not broken, and she breathed a slight sigh of relief. She slowly pressed her index finger firmly on her philtrum.
Lu Ye squatted down next to Jiang Suining. The girl's unique sweet scent was faint and elusive. Time seemed to freeze at this moment, and the surrounding air seemed to become viscous.
His gaze involuntarily fell on Jiang Suining. Her calm expression and methodical movements stirred up a strange feeling in his heart.
Finally, Zhou Xiaomei slowly opened her eyes, her gaze filled with confusion.
Jiang Suining immediately sensed something was wrong and was about to ask when she saw Zhou Xiaomei suddenly sit up, her eyes scanning the surroundings before looking down at herself. She clutched her clothes tightly with both hands, and when she saw Jiang Suining and Lu Ye, her eyes were filled with shock and disbelief. Her lips trembled as she stammered, "This... how is this possible? I actually... came back!"
"Back again?" Jiang Suining heard it clearly, and something flashed through her mind. "What do you mean, back?"
Zhou Xiaomei was like a frightened bird, her eyes darting away, not daring to look Jiang Suining in the eye, but when she looked at Lu Ye, she exuded strong disgust.
Huh? This person was so focused on marrying Lu Ye just now, pretending to be weak and manipulative, but now she's stopped pretending?
That's not right. Even if you're not pretending, it shouldn't be out of disgust.
Jiang Suining felt that something was wrong.
"What are you doing?" She saw Zhou Xiaomei's body trembling slightly, her hands clenched into fists, her knuckles turning white from the force, and she was afraid that she might faint from anger again. "You're the one who wronged me, so why do you act like I've suffered such a great injustice? Let me tell you, don't faint again, or I'll throw you into the river to feed the fish."
Zhou Xiaomei seemed not to have heard Jiang Suining's warning. A sharp glint flashed in her eyes, and her pupils suddenly contracted, as if she had suddenly caught a ray of dawn in the darkness. Her previously chaotic gaze instantly focused, and when she looked at Jiang Suining and Lu Ye again, it was with a hint of pity and a smug sense of superiority, which made Jiang Suining look confused.
"Comrade Lu... Today's incident is all my fault... Never mind, it was my own carelessness that caused me to fall into the water, it has nothing to do with Sui Sui."
She pushed herself up and changed the subject, "Sui Sui is a good girl, and she's not getting any younger. Your marriage was arranged by both of your parents a long time ago. Even for your father's sake, you can't let her down. Take advantage of this trip back and get the wedding done." After she finished speaking, she turned and walked towards the village.
The way he's saying this sounds like he's lecturing a junior! And he's even trying to match her up with Lu Ye? Jiang Suining was stunned. Did she hurt her head and not want to marry Lu Ye anymore?
Wait a minute! Jiang Suining suddenly remembered that the original book mentioned that although Zhou Xiaomei married Lu Ye as she wished, Lu Ye was a workaholic and rarely at home after marriage, which made her quite resentful and her life was not happy.
She was reborn. Her unhappy marriage in her previous life made her despise Lu Ye. Because she knew what would happen in the future, she looked at them with pity and a smug sense of superiority.
She doesn't want to marry Lu Ye, so who does she want to marry? It's definitely not the village bully, so could it be the male lead? Yes, it must be the male lead!
In the original book, she envied and was jealous of the female lead more than once. She even felt that the female lead did not do housework or cook and was not worthy of the male lead at all. She even fantasized that she was the male lead's wife.
But why would they try to match her up with Lu Ye? Jiang Suining was completely confused. No, she had to go and find out what was going on; perhaps there was some hidden story she didn't know about.
"Comrade Jiang!"
Jiang Suining had only taken two steps when Lu Ye called her back. She had no choice but to stop, wondering if he was going to bring up the matter of breaking off the engagement.
“The organization has approved our marriage,” Lu Ye walked around to her side, his eyes burning, his fists clenched: “If you become my revolutionary partner, I promise to hand over my salary, take care of all the housework, not let you suffer at all, and treat you well for the rest of my life.”
Was he proposing? The resounding promise struck Jiang Suining's heart. It took her a while to react. She lowered her head, her gaze falling on the mud clinging to the toes of her floral cloth shoes.
It was the height of summer, and a southeast wind was blowing. After lingering on the shore for so long, my wet clothes were almost dry, but my feet were still very uncomfortable in my damp shoes.
Jiang Suining felt dizzy and unconsciously twitched her toes. Lu Ye's simple confession touched her heart!
Thinking back to Lu Ye in the original book, his character is fine, he has a strong sense of responsibility, but he is a workaholic who is focused on his work and doesn't get close to women, let alone provide romance or emotional support. His way of showing affection is also very straightforward, and he is not even enthusiastic about sex, which made Zhou Xiaomei think that he was weak and incapable. She tried all sorts of ways to trick him into taking various tonics, which not only caused a lot of laughs but also affected their relationship.
However, being a workaholic has its advantages. She focuses on work and doesn't go home. She lives the life of a single aristocrat with her husband's money. It's simply wonderful. Besides, there are sunsets on the beach and seafood feasts. As for getting a tan, it's no problem at all. Making sunscreen is a piece of cake for her.
The original owner's fate began to change from this moment. Now that she was here, there was no reason for her to follow the old path. Marrying Lu Ye and going to the island with the army sounded good, at least she could leave this place of trouble. But she couldn't just agree to the marriage like that; she had to set conditions.
Lu Ye watched as Jiang Suining paced back and forth, patiently waiting for her response. He appeared calm on the surface, but inside he was panicking. He was afraid she would say no. He wanted to ask but dared not. He rubbed his trouser seams with both hands, feeling that time was passing too slowly.
The leaves of the weeping willows on the bank were wilted by the sun, and the cicadas in the trees seemed to be driven mad by the high temperature, chirping desperately, one after another, which annoyed Lu Ye.
