Chapter 31 The wound reopened
Between the mission and his hospitalization for injury, Lu Ye hadn't been able to spend much time with Jiang Suining for almost two months. Although they slept in the same bed at night, Jiang Suining only allowed him to hug and kiss her, citing his incomplete recovery. But it was still better than them sleeping in separate rooms and beds.
Lu Ye felt utterly hopeless, as if he had shot himself in the foot. He slapped his own mouth, thinking to himself: Serves you right for being so talkative, for showing off, for being so gossipy!
Jiang Suining walked out of the bedroom and went straight into the small bedroom next door. She closed the door behind her and locked it. Lying on her back on the bed, she gradually calmed down and realized that her reaction just now seemed a bit excessive. Before she transmigrated into the book, when she had a boyfriend, she also gossiped with her male colleagues at the research institute.
But then I thought, being willful once in a while and throwing a little tantrum is a kind of spice in our married life. Anyway, she's already said what she wanted to say and done what she wanted to do. If she feels something's not right now, there's no going back. Let's just leave it at that.
Jiang Suining is easygoing and can let go of things easily. On the other hand, Lu Ye felt increasingly uneasy. Xiao Zhao beside him was already snoring, and he tossed and turned, unable to fall asleep no matter what.
He thought back to the more than six months he had been married to Jiang Suining. They had always treated each other with respect and never had any conflicts. In his eyes, Jiang Suining had a good temper and was always smiling with everyone. Of course, except for Zhou Xiaomei, but that was because Zhou Xiaomei had schemed against her first.
So what happened tonight? Was she really angry just because he chatted with Zhuang Lina before? Could it be that Sui Sui is jealous? Yes, she must be jealous!
Thinking of this, Lu Ye was in a good mood. He sat up, got out of bed, put on his shoes, and went out of the master bedroom to open the door to the second bedroom. However, he found that the door was locked from the inside. He searched for the key in the cabinet in the living room and opened the door to the second bedroom.
The curtains in the second bedroom were only half drawn, and moonlight streamed in through the half-window, making a hazy glimpse of a raised figure on the bed.
Lu Ye gently closed the door, tiptoed over, slowly pulled back the corner of the blanket, took off his shoes, crawled into the blanket, and turned to pull Jiang Suining into his arms.
Jiang Suining was a heavy sleeper and didn't wake up even when Lu Ye held her in his arms. She didn't wake up until she was sweating profusely in the middle of the night. In her daze, she felt that her hands and feet were restrained. Just as she was about to struggle, she heard a series of snores in her ear. She was distracted and remembered that she had clearly slept alone at night. Why was there someone else in the bed? Suddenly, she was wide awake.
Meanwhile, Lu Ye sneaked into Jiang Suining's bed and held her, feeling his whole body burning. He had been sexually frustrated for almost two months and almost couldn't resist. But looking at the peaceful sleeping face of the person in his arms, and thinking about how she clearly said to wait when he wanted to do it last night, he could only endure it. But with her soft fragrance in his arms, it was really hard to hold back. He finally fell asleep, but in his dream, he was kicked off the bed.
He rubbed his sore bottom and got up, calling out pitifully, "Sui Sui, it's me."
After kicking the person off the bed, Jiang Suining immediately realized that the person who climbed into her bed in the middle of the night was most likely Lu Ye. She realized that she had acted impulsively and regretted it. She quickly got out of bed and helped the person up.
Lu Ye was initially worried that Jiang Suining was still angry, but when he saw her helping him up, he knew that she was no longer angry. He suddenly hugged Jiang Suining and fell onto the bed.
He was a little embarrassed, burying his head in Jiang Suining's neck, and only gradually letting go when he saw that Jiang Suining did not object.
Having been apart for almost two months, Jiang Suining also missed Lu Ye a little. However, he had just been injured, and she was worried about his health, which was why she refused him last night. But now, she was finding it hard to resist his kisses. She thought to herself, "Fine, let him hug and kiss me, just let him have his way with his words, and don't actually do anything."
She thought this to herself, but didn't say it to Lu Ye. When Lu Ye saw that she didn't push him away, he assumed she was willing and suddenly became aroused. He gradually increased the intensity and strength of his kisses, no longer satisfied with her earlobe, and slowly climbed up to her lips, kissing Jiang Suining until she was completely confused and infatuated. By the time she came to her senses, he had already succeeded.
Jiang Suining was a little worried that he might not be able to handle it, so she reached out and pushed him to stop him from continuing. At this moment, Lu Ye was like an arrow on a bowstring that had to be released. When Jiang Suining pushed him, he not only did not get up, but he also exerted more force, and in a few moments, he made Jiang Suining go limp.
She didn't know how much time had passed, and Jiang Suining was already somewhat delirious. Lu Ye still showed no sign of stopping. She raised her hand, trying to stop him, but this guy hadn't eaten meat for many days, and suddenly being given meat made him lose control. Seeing Jiang Suining's hand reach out, he directly intertwined his fingers with hers and kissed her lips. Jiang Suining completely lost consciousness at this point.
Jiang Suining overexerted herself at night and woke up late in the morning. Her back ached, her mind was foggy, and as she looked at the daylight outside the window, she gradually remembered what had happened last night. She was about to call Lu Ye when she suddenly remembered that there was Xiao Zhao at home, so she didn't call out.
She got up, changed her clothes, and went out to wash up. When Lu Ye saw her, he eagerly came forward to help her. Jiang Suining was angry, but she was also afraid that Xiao Zhao would laugh at her, so she didn't want to talk to him.
Knowing he was in the wrong, Lu Ye followed behind, helping to squeeze toothpaste and handing over towels, without saying a word.
The two remained at an impasse until they sat down at the table to eat breakfast. Suddenly, Xiao Zhao said, "Chief of Staff, did you go for a morning run this morning? I didn't see you when I woke up." He then looked at Jiang Suining and said, "Sister-in-law, you have to keep an eye on the Chief of Staff. He's not fully recovered yet, how can he exercise?"
Hearing his words and thinking about what happened last night, Jiang Suining was so embarrassed that she just wanted to crawl into a hole. Lu Ye saw Jiang Suining's embarrassment and kicked Xiao Zhao under the table: "You kid, don't talk nonsense. I didn't go for a morning run. I promised your sister-in-law that I wouldn't exercise for a while. Don't talk nonsense."
"Didn't you go for a morning run?" Xiao Zhao asked, puzzled. "Then where did you go this morning if you weren't in bed?"
Upon hearing this, Xiao Zhao became anxious, put down his chopsticks, and stood up: "Chief of Staff, you, you can't send me away. The regimental commander gave me the task of taking care of you here. The task is not yet completed. I will not leave, I will not leave!"
After he finished speaking, he put down his chopsticks, turned around, and went to sweep the yard.
Seeing this, Jiang Suining glared at Lu Ye: "It was clearly you who broke your promise. Last night, you exercised for most of the night, and you took it out on that young soldier."
Lu Ye was in a great mood when he saw that Jiang Suining was paying attention to him. He hugged Jiang Suining and kissed her on the cheek: "Good wife, you finally paid attention to me."
"Go away, get out of the way, Xiao Zhao is still here." Jiang Suining hurriedly pushed him away.
“So I let him leave?” Lu Ye looked at the yard with disdain. “He’s disturbing our time together. No, we can’t let him stay any longer.”
Jiang Suining was at work during the day, leaving Lu Ye alone at home. She was worried about him, so she pulled Lu Ye aside and said, "It would be bad if you sent that young soldier back home like that. Here's what we'll do: let him stay and take care of you during the day, and go back to the regiment's barracks to rest at night."
Lu Ye thought about it and realized that Jiang Suining's words made sense, so he stopped insisting.
After breakfast, Jiang Suining went directly to the seaside aquaculture farm construction base.
During Jiang Suining's leave of absence, the project team specially hired technicians from other places who had participated in the construction of the kelp artificial breeding farm, and found experienced old fishermen on the island to conduct on-site inspections along the coastline before selecting the most suitable location for building the breeding farm.
Currently, they are clearing away some broken boats and drying areas built by fishermen themselves on the shore to build seedling nurseries and warehouses.
When Jiang Suining arrived, she saw many soldiers cleaning the coastline with the fishermen. She had only met the team members once on the first day of the project, and hadn't joined since. Now, seeing all the unfamiliar faces, she didn't know who was in charge and stood there dumbfounded, not knowing what to do.
Finally spotting a familiar face, Jiang Suining quickly went to greet them: "We've already recruited some people, we'll wait for them to be trained before continuing to recruit. By the way, what are you doing here?"
“Me?” Lü Aiguo said with some helplessness, “I am a brick of socialism, I can be moved wherever I am needed.”
"Stop being so glib and speak properly." Jiang Suining noticed that many people around them were looking at them, so she pulled him toward the wooden office next to them.
Lu Aiguo opened his office and let Jiang Suining in: "Isn't it because the project team is short-staffed that I was temporarily transferred here to assist with the construction of the breeding farm?"
"I see." Jiang Suining thought for a moment and said, "The recruitment work will be put on hold for now. You should mention it to your supervisor and ask me to come and help."
“No problem.” Lu Aiguo was overjoyed and pulled Jiang Suining to sit at the desk, pointing to the stacks of documents and drawings on the table. “These are the design drawings for the breeding farm, the list of required materials, and so on. Take a look and you’ll have a general idea.”
"So many?" Jiang Suining picked up a blueprint and looked at it casually. "This is quite a large-scale project."
“It is indeed quite large,” Lu Aiguo explained. “We didn’t originally plan to do something this big. The technicians who came were accompanied by a few experienced fishermen from the surrounding villages. They spent four or five days assessing the situation and then submitted a report to the higher-ups, saying that our coastline, whether it’s the water depth, the underwater environment, the water quality and flow rate, or even the environment of the surrounding coastline, is very suitable for large-scale kelp farming.”
"That's so good?" Jiang Suining was somewhat surprised.
“That’s right,” Lü Aiguo said mysteriously. “Now many places need a lot of seaweed, so the higher-ups have approved expanding the scale.”
“This will take a long time to build,” Jiang Suining frowned slightly. “By the time it’s finished, will there still be such a large demand for seaweed nationwide? And what about funding? Does the project team have that much budget? Has the higher-ups added more funding?”
"No, not at all." Lü Aiguo shook his head.
"How can we expand without additional budget?" Jiang Suining raised her voice.
“You don’t need to worry about that,” Lu Aiguo said with a relaxed expression. “They have divided this project into three phases. The first phase is smaller than the originally planned scale of the farm. The second phase will only begin after the first phase is completed and the farm generates revenue. The third phase will only start after the second phase is completed and can be used normally.”
“I see,” Jiang Suining thought for a moment and realized that the plan was indeed feasible. “That’s good. If the supply of the island exceeds the demand in the future, the third phase of construction can be shelved or converted to the aquaculture of other seafood.”
Lu Aiguo hadn't thought that far ahead. The two chatted for a while longer when someone outside called Lu Aiguo. He told Jiang Suining to look at the documents first while he went out to check. He then asked the project manager to have Jiang Suining come and help.
Jiang Suining began to organize the materials on the table, categorizing them according to the drawings, plans, material lists, and so on, before starting to look at the plans one by one.
Occasionally, someone would come into the office, but Jiang Suining remained focused, engrossed in reading the documents. The person who came in didn't dare to disturb her.
Jiang Suining didn't look up from her documents until her stomach started growling. She looked out the window and saw it was already noon. She stood up, stretched, and thought it was time to go home for lunch. Just then, Lü Aiguo pushed the door open and came in: "Senior, let's go eat."
"Oh, you provide lunch here?" Jiang Suining asked, somewhat surprised.
“Who cares?” Lu Aiguo said. “It’s just that the higher-ups think our progress is too slow, so they’re having lunch here to speed things up.”
Upon hearing this, Jiang Suining hesitated. She didn't want to stay for a meal; she wanted to go home. But she had just said that morning that she wanted to come and help at the construction site. Was she about to leave the community?
Seeing her hesitation, Lü Aiguo smiled and said, "A batch of materials just arrived at the supply and marketing cooperative today. Senior, could you help me go and pick them up?"
“Okay,” Jiang Suining immediately agreed. “Do you have a list of materials?”
“Yes,” Lü Aiguo walked to his desk, rummaged through the documents, and pulled out a list of materials. “There are quite a lot of things. After you check and confirm that everything is correct, ask the comrades from the supply and marketing cooperative to help deliver them.”
"Okay." Jiang Suining took the materials list and left the office.
Back at the family compound, Jiang Suining ran into Lu Ye and Xiao Zhao at her doorstep. She noticed that Lu Ye looked rather pale, so she quickly opened the gate and let them in: "What happened? Where have you two been?"
Xiao Zhao stammered, not daring to tell the truth. Lu Ye simply comforted Jiang Suining: "It's okay, nothing happened, I just went for a walk."
"You're not telling the truth, are you?" Jiang Suining immediately became agitated, reaching out to pull at Lu Ye's clothes, "Let me see your wound."
She thought about how much he had been up to last night, and how it might have aggravated his wound.
Lu Ye quickly hid behind him, refusing to let him see.
With that, Jiang Suining understood everything. She stopped what she was doing and looked at Xiao Zhao: "Xiao Zhao, tell me, what exactly happened to your chief of staff?"
Xiao Zhao went to look at Lu Ye, but Jiang Suining pulled Lu Ye away, blocking his view: "You're not going to talk, are you? If you don't talk, I'll go find your regimental commander and have him ask you himself."
These words indeed startled Xiao Zhao. He stood up straight and immediately blurted out everything like beans pouring from a bamboo tube: "The chief of staff suddenly had chest pain in the middle of the morning and went to the hospital for a check-up. The wound had reopened."
"It cracked open again inside?" Jiang Suining keenly grasped the key point in his words. "What do you mean?"
"That's right, the surface is fine, but the inside hasn't fully healed yet, and somehow it's cracked open again." Xiao Zhao was also completely baffled. The chief of staff clearly said that he hadn't done any strenuous exercise, so how could the wound have cracked open again? Just now at the hospital, Dr. Zhuang asked the chief of staff, but the chief of staff stammered and couldn't give a clear answer, which made Dr. Zhuang quite angry.
Jiang Suining was startled and asked, "How was it handled?"
"Dr. Zhuang bandaged the wound again, saying that this condition can only be observed. He instructed the chief of staff to absolutely not do any strenuous exercise, not at all, and to rest in bed. He should avoid bending over, turning over, raising his arms, and other movements that might strain his upper body. If he develops a fever or difficulty breathing, he should seek medical attention immediately." Xiao Zhao carefully repeated Dr. Zhuang's instructions.
"Is it that serious?" Jiang Suining was a little scared and also very regretful. She shouldn't have let Lu Ye go last night. "Then why not stay in the hospital? It would be easier for the doctors to observe the wound healing if you stayed in the hospital."
“Yes, yes,” Xiao Zhao went to see Lu Ye, “It’s because the chief of staff refused to be hospitalized. Dr. Zhuang later said that he wouldn’t stay, but he had to go to the hospital for a check-up every two days.”
“Making a trip every two days isn’t enough trouble,” Jiang Suining protested. “I’ll pack your bags right now. You should go to the hospital.”
“Sui Sui,” Lu Ye grabbed Jiang Sui Ning’s arm, “I will definitely follow the doctor’s instructions completely this time. I will stay in bed and rest. I will not get out of bed unless I need to go to the toilet or eat. I really don’t want to go to the hospital. The hospital is too deserted, and the smell of disinfectant is unpleasant. It will make me feel bad. I am an injured person, and being in a bad mood is not good for my recovery.”
Xiao Zhao was stunned. Chief of Staff Lu, who was known as the "Cold-Faced King of Hell" in the regiment and was always serious and never smiled, had never spoken so humbly before.
Jiang Suining felt sorry for him and couldn't bear to see him like that. She also thought that if he were hospitalized, she wouldn't be able to take time off to stay with him. It would be better for him to rest at home. She thought that after this incident, he should be able to calm down: "Alright, then hurry up and go back to bed."
Lu Ye was afraid that Jiang Suining would take him to the hospital, so he quickly went into the bedroom and obediently lay down.
Looking at Lu Ye's pale face, Jiang Suining felt a little regretful when she thought about how she had just said she would go to the construction site to help out that morning. If she were still recruiting in the project office, she could spend more time with Lu Ye every day. But if she went to the construction site, she would probably be very busy.
Lu Ye seemed to have guessed what she was thinking and comforted her, "Just go to work with peace of mind. I mean what I say. I will definitely stay in bed and rest. Xiao Zhao will take care of me at home, so don't worry."
Seeing Lu Ye's sincere expression, Jiang Suining knew that he was really going to follow the doctor's orders. It seemed that the reopening of the wound had frightened him, which was good, as it put her at ease.
