Chapter 14 When it rains, it pours

Chapter 14 When it rains, it pours

There was a hired groom at the inn before.

But since they were escaping, Jiang Yueyao didn't trust anyone. Fortunately, she could drive a carriage herself. As soon as the sun rose and the city gate opened, the three of them set off.

The journey was smooth at the beginning. The three of them traveled during the day and found an inn to stay at night.

Five days later, they entered Chizhou.

Chizhou is mountainous and the roads are difficult to travel on.

Even though it was an official road, the road was narrow, with either high mountains or rocky cliffs on both sides. Jiang Yueyao was still a novice at driving a cart, so she didn't dare to drive too fast.

The three of them set out at dawn that day, hoping to reach Chizhou City in one go.

Unfortunately, the fine sky suddenly turned dark.

Su Lan lifted the carriage curtain and asked Jiang Yueyao, who was driving the carriage, "Is it going to rain? Is there a post station nearby?"

Jiang Yueyao glanced at Tian'er and said, "Yes, it's just ten kilometers away."

But she didn't want to live in an inn.

Last time at another inn, the room was so dirty that she didn't even sleep on the bed and just sat on a chair all night.

She thought that even if she couldn't get into the city, it would be good if she could get to a small town thirty kilometers away.

There is an inn in the town, which is more comfortable than staying in a post station.

But things don't always go as planned.

Not long after the two finished talking, muffled thunder was heard, followed by heavy rain.

There is no choice now.

Jiang Yueyao drove the carriage into the post station. Fortunately, she was lucky today as there was still a room left.

Without hesitation, she paid the money and booked a room in the upper room.

He gave the post station boy an extra piece of silver and said, "Please boil some hot water for me."

The rain was so heavy that even though she was wearing a raincoat, she was still soaked.

At the end of March, the temperature has not yet warmed up.

After being drenched in rain again, Jiang Yueyao's face turned pale from the cold and her teeth were chattering.

The other party looked at her and agreed readily. Not long after, a large bucket of hot water was delivered.

The room was full of women, so Jiang Yueyao didn't let him go in.

"Put it at the door, thank you."

The other party was very enthusiastic: "I hear your accent sounds like you are from Sioux City? Where are you going?"

Jiang Yueyao was very vigilant along the way.

She doesn't trust anyone and won't talk to others casually.

She glanced at the other person and saw that his eyes kept glancing into the house, and she immediately became alert.

Her eyebrows furrowed and her face became stern.

"Where are you looking?" Her voice suddenly rose. "The room is full of women. What's there to see?"

The other party was not expecting her to speak so loudly and was stunned.

But he wasn't angry, and there was even a smile on his face.

"Look at you! I just wanted to show some concern, but you took my kindness for granted."

He walked out while saying, "It's hard to be a good person."

Jiang Yueyao watched his figure gradually disappear at the corner of the stairs, and suddenly a bad premonition arose in her heart.

Sulan came over.

Seeing that she was staring outside, he asked, "What's wrong?"

Jiang Yueyao came back to her senses and shook her head slightly.

Sister Lan is timid and afraid of things. Ever since she was told that Pei Yu wanted to kill them, she has been worrying day and night for the past few days and has lost a lot of weight.

After carrying the water into the room, the three of them simply washed themselves and changed into clean clothes.

Before going to bed, Jiang Yueyao thought of that man's eyes and worriedly reminded Sulan and Cui Xiangxiang.

"Let's not take off our clothes tonight. Let's be alert when we go to bed."

As she spoke, she took out the silver bills she had hidden on her body and divided them into three parts.

He gave one to Cui Xiangxiang, one to Sulan, and kept one for himself.

"Hide it close to your body. It's safer this way."

The two men carefully hid the banknotes.

Cui Xiangxiang looked worried: "The post station here is too far from the town. It's in the wilderness, and I always feel uneasy."

"Alas, ever since I left Sucheng, my heart has been in turmoil, and I haven't felt at ease for a moment..."

"It's okay, I'm here." Jiang Yueyao comforted them, turned off the lights and went to bed.

Jiang Yueyao couldn't sleep because she had something on her mind.

I lay in bed for an hour, but still couldn't sleep.

Worried that her tossing and turning would disturb Sulan and Cui Xiangxiang who were sleeping next to her, Jiang Yueyao got up, walked around the screen, and sat on the couch facing the window outside.

Outside the window, the wind is strong and the rain is heavy.

The wind and rain pattered against the window, making her even more upset.

The wind and rain were raging outside, but Jiang Yueyao in the house felt increasingly confused and hesitant.

After leaving Su City, she hadn't decided where to settle down.

I feel that every place is not as good as Suzhou.

She grew up in Suzhou and lived there for more than ten years. She liked every part of the city: the Jiangnan style, the small bridges and flowing water, the Qinhuai customs, and the soft Wu dialect that filled the streets.

Only after leaving Suzhou did I realize that other places were unsatisfactory in every way.

Now I am in Chizhou.

Chizhou is a place with poor mountains and bad water.

The mountains here are high and the water is bad. It is said that there are bandits every year. The people of Chizhou used to flee...

Just as she was thinking about the bandits, she suddenly heard some movement outside the door.

It was very slight, if the room had not been so quiet and she had not happened to be so close to the door.

But at first, she thought she had misheard.

So he held his breath and stared at the door without blinking.

Soon, there was another noise, not coming from her door, but outside the room, as if in the corridor.

She got off the couch and approached quietly.

The room was dark. She squatted down, leaned on the door, and looked out through the gap.

There is a night light in the corridor...

Under the candlelight, two shadows came quietly.

Jiang Yueyao's heart tightened, and at this moment, she heard-----

"Second brother, you just stay here. Brother Xiong and the others will be here soon. He promised us last time that he would give us 30% this time."

"Seriously?" The second-in-command was very excited and flattered the other party, "Brother Yong, you are really amazing. You can even speak the final word to a well-known figure like Brother Xiong. From now on, I will follow you and do whatever you ask me to do."

"Okay, stop flattering me and guard this place. You will definitely get some benefits."

One of them left, and the one called Erbazi stood outside.

Guard Jiang Yueyao's door tightly.

Along the way, Jiang Yueyao happened to hear the name of 'Brother Xiong'.

A famous bandit near Chizhou, who robbed people of their money and raped them, doing all kinds of evil, making the surrounding people hate him to death.

Jiang Yueyao's legs went weak and she almost fell to the ground.

It never rains but it pours.

She is so unlucky.

But now was not the time to feel sorry for herself, so she quietly stood up, walked quickly around the screen, and went into the inner room.

He gently woke up Sulan and Cui Xiangxiang and told them not to make any noise.

Then he leaned close to their ears and told them what was happening outside.

The two of them looked terrified on the spot...

"Don't be afraid. There's a hidden window at the back of this room. We can cut the sheets and twist them into a rope and escape from the back."

When the two heard this, they immediately took action.

Because there were people outside, the three of them moved very quietly.

Soon, a rope made of twisted sheets was ready. Jiang Yueyao gently opened the window and tied the rope to the bed leg.

"Aunt Xiang, please go out first."

Cui Xiangxiang's hands and feet were shaking: "Yaoyao, I can't do it. I'm afraid of heights."

Jiang Yueyao looked at Sulan again, and Sulan's face turned frighteningly pale.

Her voice trembled.

"How about you go down and catch us first?"

Seeing that both of them were so frightened, Jiang Yueyao didn't dare to delay any longer. She stepped on a stool to climb up to the window, grabbed the rope tightly, and slid down.

Once she stood firm, she was about to signal the two people above to come down quickly.

Suddenly, a low shout came from behind him.

"Brother Xiong, someone escaped here..."
