Chapter 40: Empty, Lonely, and Cold
Lu Sui raised his eyes to look at her.
"Is half a day enough?"
"That's enough." Seeing that he agreed, Jiang Yueyao raised the corner of her lips, "Thank you, sir. You are so kind."
As she spoke, she stood up and scooped him another bowl of soup.
Lu Sui drank a mouthful of soup and saw that she was staring at him, so he asked, "You don't want to eat?"
"Eat." Jiang Yueyao picked up the chopsticks and ate while looking at him and laughing, "The adults' eating movements are really beautiful."
Lord Lu, who was eating, choked.
Suddenly he started coughing.
Jiang Yueyao hurriedly handed over a cup of tea, but Lu Sui didn't take it and looked at her with a sullen face.
"...Don't talk while eating or sleeping, just shut up!"
"oh."
…
The next morning, Jiang Yueyao was still dreaming in bed when Sulan came in.
"Yaoyao, wake up quickly, Lord Lu is here."
Jiang Yueyao was sleeping soundly and didn't hear clearly who it was. She muttered something, turned over and fell asleep again.
Sulan was helpless.
I had no choice but to pull the quilt off her.
The quilt was pulled away, and the coolness of the early morning came. Jiang Yueyao reluctantly opened her eyes.
She looked at Sulan, unhappy.
"It's still early, let me sleep a little longer."
"You can't sleep anymore. Lord Lu is here. Get up quickly."
Jiang Yueyao was yawning, and suddenly stopped halfway through.
"who?"
"Master Lu." Su Lan pulled her up from the bed, turned around and handed her the dress she had just taken out, "Hurry up, don't keep you waiting for too long."
Jiang Yueyao was wondering as she put on her clothes.
"Why is he here so early? Isn't he attending court today?"
Sulan shook her head, prepared toiletries for her, and went out.
Jiang Yueyao put on her clothes, washed up, and simply tied her hair into a single bun.
Because it was her mother's death anniversary, she only wore a white jade hairpin.
She went to the main hall and saw Lu Sui sitting in the first seat drinking tea.
He was dressed in a dark brocade robe, with his hair tied up with a jade crown. He sat there quietly, looking dignified, noble, and unparalleled in handsomeness.
Jiang Yueyao was quite surprised to see that he was not wearing an official robe.
"Sir, are you taking a rest today?"
Lu Sui looked at her, his eyes fell on her plain white dress, and nodded slightly.
"I happen to be going to Xiangguo Temple today, so I'll take you with me."
"Very good."
Jiang Yueyao was still worried yesterday. Xiangguo Temple is a royal temple. Although it also receives ordinary pilgrims on weekdays, she heard that it has more rules than other temples. She was afraid that she would make mistakes if she didn't know the rules.
With Lord Lu accompanying her today, she doesn't have to worry about these things.
After a simple breakfast, Jiang Yueyao set off with Lu Sui.
There were two people in one carriage, and Jiang Yueyao had been acting unruly since she got on.
She sat on the left side for a while, then moved to the right side. She lifted the curtain and was about to stick her head out when Lu Sui's intolerable voice came.
"If you can't sit still, go down and walk by yourself."
Jiang Yueyao immediately calmed down.
But her obedience only lasted for half a quarter of an hour. When the carriage left the city gate, she could no longer sit still.
She glanced at Lu Sui stealthily, and seeing that he was resting with his eyes closed, she secretly lifted the curtain and looked outside.
Xiangguo Temple is located on Jiulu Peak.
The scenery here is beautiful, the air is fresh, and there are birds singing and flowers blooming along the way... Jiang Yueyao lay in front of the window, gradually becoming mesmerized by the view, and unconsciously hummed a Jiangnan tune.
She has a nice voice. She usually chatters and is annoying, but at this moment, she sings a folk song in the soft Wu dialect, which is a different experience.
Lord Lu, who had originally closed his eyes to rest, slowly opened them and looked towards her.
Because they left early, the morning light was just beginning to appear. A few rays of sunlight fell on the girl's face, illuminating the small hairs on her face, making her skin look even more smooth.
The corners of her lips curved slightly, she hummed a tune softly, and her brows relaxed like a painting...
He had a day off today and had no plans to come to Xiangguo Temple.
But when she mentioned the sadness in her eyes yesterday when she was talking about her mother's death anniversary, Lu Sui's heart moved slightly, and he decided to come here for some unknown reason.
But now seeing how happy she is, where is the sadness from yesterday?
He was overthinking it.
Qingxuan was driving the cart and Qingshu was sitting on the shaft. When he heard Jiang Yueyao humming a tune, he turned around to look at her.
"What is the girl singing? It's quite nice."
Jiang Yueyao turned to look at him: "My mother taught me this little love song. It's about a girl who likes a lover but is too shy to confess her feelings to him."
She then asked Qingshu, "Do you have a girl you like?"
Qingshu was startled.
"My heart only has the master, not the girl."
Jiang Yueyao laughed out loud, "Qingshu, you really are loyal to your master anytime and anywhere."
"My loyalty to my master is evident to all."
Jiang Yueyao couldn't help but look back at Lu Sui.
He happened to be looking at her, and their eyes met. She raised the corners of her lips and asked softly.
"Sir, do you have a girl you like?"
Lu Sui looked away and looked at the scenery outside the window through the opened curtains with a cold expression on his face.
"none."
Jiang Yueyao came closer to him, trying to find any signs of lying on his face.
But Lu Sui pushed him away.
"Sit still!"
Jiang Yueyao sat upright, looking just like a student in front of her teacher.
Her small face was full of desire for knowledge.
"You are already 24 this year, right? In our Su City, you are already a father at your age, and your children are all grown up. But you don't even have a girl you like?"
Lu Sui glanced at her.
"So what if there isn't one?"
"Your mother must be so worried," Jiang Yueyao said considerately. "I heard that a man's body is no different from a 52-year-old after he's 25. If you want a child, I advise you to get married soon."
"Jiang, Yue, Yao!"
Lu Sui's forehead veins bulged, "You're a girl, yet you're so outspoken. Do you have any shame?"
Jiang Yueyao blinked in confusion.
"Why am I being so outspoken when I tell the truth?"
She was still quite unconvinced, "Why are you embarrassed? It's all written in the book, haven't you read it?"
"What storybook?"
"The delicate little widow and the rough guy next door."
Lu Sui took a deep breath.
His cheeks were tight and his face was terribly gloomy.
"If I find out you're reading this kind of book again, you won't get your monthly salary anymore."
Jiang Yueyao wanted to refute.
But when she met his frightening gaze, she swallowed back the words that were on the tip of her tongue.
"You're such a meddlesome person!"
"If I don't take care of you, who knows what you'll be thinking about all day." Lu Sui snorted coldly.
"What can I think about?" Jiang Yueyao said seriously, "Besides wanting to be your concubine, I just want to make money, nothing else."
“…”
Lu Sui closed his eyes.
If he hadn't been sane, he would have wanted to throw her out.
There's no hope!
Seeing that he closed his eyes and didn't speak, his face looked cold.
Jiang Yueyao couldn't help laughing.
"Oh, sir, I was wrong. I won't be your concubine, okay?"
"But can you allow me to take a look at the storybook?"
"Otherwise I'd be empty, lonely, and cold."
"You can't give me warmth..."
Lu Sui covered her chattering mouth with his hand.
I can no longer maintain my usual calm and composure.
He lowered his voice.
Gnashing his teeth in her ear.
"Jiang, Yue, Yao!"
"Shut up!"
