Chapter 19 Not Uncle But Brother
It was Children's Day too, but the orphanage seemed deserted.
Although the decorations were simple and many kind people sent gifts, the children were only happy for a short while. The joy here was short-lived and cautious, which was very different from Children's Day activities elsewhere.
But this year was special. The director brought their favorite uncle to perform. The uncle was very gentle and had a nice voice. They all liked him very much. They were looking forward to the arrival of a warm and kind uncle. From the moment the director left, everyone watched the closed door eagerly. When the director came back, he did not bring back an uncle, but a young man dressed in age-appropriate clothes. Even if they could not see his face clearly, they knew it was not an uncle.
The children's eager eyes suddenly turned lost, like a kitten who had been stood up. Due to the environment, they did not cry or make a fuss, but the smiles disappeared from their innocent faces.
Pei Lang didn't know how many children there were here, nor did he know their clothing sizes. He just bought toys and food, and entered the courtyard. He took off his mask and sunglasses only after the dean closed the door.
The dean was surprised for a moment, then smiled and took him to the children. "Guess who's here?"
"What a handsome brother." The child standing in the front exclaimed.
Soon several other children echoed in the voice, and there was suddenly a little light in their lost eyes. Their eyes were so clear that a little light was enough to make them sparkle.
Pei Lang felt weird when he was praised for being pretty. He would rather be praised for being pretty. Children speak without restraint. What they blurt out is the most truthful. These words touched the softest part of Pei Lang's heart. As someone who liked cute children, his eyes became kind and gentle.
The dean smiled until his eyes narrowed as he introduced him. "The uncle you've been waiting for is here."
This sentence was not so straightforward, and because it was far from what they expected, the children were confused for a while, until Pei Lang spoke. "Hello, happy Children's Day."
Pei Lang's voice was so recognizable that the children's eyes widened in surprise.
"Not uncle, but brother?"
"Brother is so beautiful, brother sing, brother sing."
…
The children suddenly started chattering, surrounding Pei Lang like a swarm of swarms. Pei Lang gently took down his guitar and put it aside, then squatted down to communicate with the children. No matter what they asked, he patiently answered them.
The weather is good. This city is a pearl embraced and cared for by nature. Not only is the scenery beautiful, but the weather is neither too cold nor too dry, which is very suitable for outdoor activities.
On the lawn in the yard, a variety of fruit snacks, toys and snacks were placed on the table. The children couldn't wait to play with Pei Lang. After sharing the snacks, they chattered and asked to listen to songs. Pei Lang sat cross-legged on the blanket on the lawn, holding a guitar, facing the breeze and warm sunshine, plucking the strings, and singing with the most gentle voice.
As soon as he started singing, the children all quieted down, held their heads up and listened. The beauty of this moment surpassed everything.
The dean sat aside until the song was over, then the children clapped excitedly and shouted for another song. They were here to perform, so of course they couldn't just sing one song, so Pei Lang immediately started singing again.
His singing voice is always so good that people can’t get enough of it. Although he looks innocent, he is just a mortal who needs a rest. When he finished singing the fourth song, the dean brought him a glass of water. “Okay, let Brother take a rest for a while, so that everyone can chat with him.”
The dean said as he handed the water to Pei Lang.
"Thank you~ The other nurses are not here. You have worked hard alone. You should take a rest." After taking a sip of water to moisten his throat, Pei Lang made an invitation.
In order to protect Pei Lang's privacy, the director gave all the nurses a holiday. It was indeed tiring for one person to take care of so many children.
"It's not hard for you to come. Excuse me, what is your name?" He didn't mean to ask for the name, he just called her.
Knowing that Pei Lang values privacy, the dean still doesn't know how to address him after meeting him for such a long time. "Just call me Xiao Lang."
"Brother Xiaolang~"
"Brother Xiaolang~"
As soon as Pei Lang said this, the children called out sweetly. Pei Lang enjoyed hearing them call him "brother". He smiled and glanced at a big child in the distance. The child had been looking at him from a distance with a gloomy look. He had noticed it since he entered the room, but he was entangled by the children, so he had no time to think.
"That kid... why doesn't he come over to play with us?" Pei Lang chatted with the dean and brought up the topic. The kid was the oldest here and looked to be about ten years old.
"You mean Xiaochi? That child has been a loner since he was young and doesn't like to communicate with others." Speaking of Xiaochi, the director also became worried. "Xiaochi grew up in an orphanage. Even though he had excellent grades and a good-looking face, no one adopted him. He was always returned after two days of adoption. The reason was that Xiaochi didn't like to talk, had gloomy eyes, and had a weird temper."
Children who grew up in an orphanage all had some psychological problems, so the director would tell them stories, play nice and healing music, and invite Pei Lang to perform. But Xiao Chi was a child that she could not communicate with no matter how she tried to persuade him. He would often explode in silence, and she could not find the point where he vented his temper.
As the director, he hopes that every child can grow up healthily, and Xiaochi is no exception. So when someone comes to adopt Xiaochi, she will praise Xiaochi. However, after being rejected again and again with the same reason, the director dare not say more.
She was afraid that if he was rejected too many times, Xiao Chi would not be able to bear it mentally and become even more unsociable.
As time went by, the child grew up, and naturally no one was willing to adopt a big child. In fact, not every child in the orphanage can find a good family, so there are many who are not adopted. But Xiaochi is different. Although he has excellent grades, he cannot communicate normally with the outside world because of his personality.
He is about to turn 18 and can no longer stay in the orphanage. Xiaochi has good grades, and the director will find someone who is willing to sponsor his schooling. However, once he leaves the orphanage, he will live an isolated life alone, and with such a personality, he will probably suffer injustice and loss.
Even if he has a bad personality, he is the child she watched grow up, so she is so worried.
"Dean, please tell the children a story. I'll go see Xiaochi." After finishing the water in the cup, Pei Lang stood up, put the cup away, and slowly walked towards Xiaochi.
The child had been watching from a distance. When he saw Pei Lang approaching, he was alert and nervous. His cold little face was stiff, but he had no intention of running away. The sunlight in front of him was blocked, and the shadow cast by Pei Lang's body covered him. With his back to the light, Pei Lang asked with a faint smile. "Hello, what's your name?"
"Don't you know that?"
"..." Pei Lang felt that this child was a little difficult to deal with. "Why don't you play with everyone?" Pei Lang asked again patiently.
"Children's Day, I'm not a child anymore." In a few months, I'll be eighteen, why celebrate Children's Day? Xiao Chi spoke like an adult, and Pei Lang finally realized what was going on.
That's right, he is definitely not a child anymore.
"So Xiaochi doesn't like listening to me singing?"
"No, I like it." The boy spoke briefly, and was indeed a quiet child. But no matter what, he was just a child. Pei Lang had seen all kinds of people, so why would he be afraid of not being able to handle a child?
"Xiao Chi's hair looks very soft, can I touch your head?"
Xiao Chi was stunned for a moment, his ears suddenly turned red, and he nodded gently to indicate that he was OK, clearly a proud cat. After getting his consent, Pei Lang gently placed his palm on Xiao Chi's head and rubbed it, ruffling his hair, and then carefully combed it with his fingers.
Xiao Chi only felt a tingling sensation on his head, and the hair that was touched by Pei Lang seemed to have a sense of touch, which was very strange.
After styling his hair, Pei Lang withdrew his hand and praised. "It's really soft. Since Xiao Chi likes my singing, I'll sing a song for you. Do you want to listen?"
Pei Lang respected children very much and would ask for their consent before doing anything.
He could see that the kid had a strong sense of self-esteem and was full of thorns, but in fact, if he just stroked his hair, he would find that he was not as cold as he looked.
"Did you sing it just for me?"
"Yes, you heard it first." He had not planned to sing the new song, as he had only written half of it, but since Xiao Chi asked, Pei Lang decided to sing the new song. "But I haven't written a new song for a long time, so if I don't sing it well, please don't blame me, Xiao Chi."
"No!" Xiao Chi answered immediately, and then added, "You can sing badly."
This was a recognition of Pei Lang. Without a guitar, Pei Lang had no choice but to sing. Xiao Chi was not sociable and stayed away from the group of children. Pei Lang sang quietly, so the other children could not hear him.
It was really just for Xiao Chi, and he was the only one who heard it. Pei Lang was concentrating on singing, and didn't notice that Xiao Chi's mouth cracked and revealed a brief smile. After singing, Pei Lang brought some snacks to eat with Xiao Chi. In fact, Pei Lang had been hungry for a long time, but he didn't eat because of face.
In the past, he could only dream of these snacks, and he could only eat them secretly a few times, but they were never satisfying enough. This time, he could finally eat them openly, and he was so satisfied that he didn't even care about Xiao Chi's gaze on him.
The dean saw that Pei Lang and Xiao Chi could talk, so he asked Pei Lang to chat with Xiao Chi more, and then played games with the children. In the blink of an eye, it was afternoon and it was time for Pei Lang to leave. There were too many things in the hospital and the dean couldn't get away, so he couldn't send Pei Lang off. Xiao Chi took the initiative to step forward, which surprised both the dean and Pei Lang.
After bidding farewell to the children, Pei Lang put on his sunglasses and mask again, and walked out with Xiao Chi. Xiao Chi was not tall, only reaching Pei Lang's shoulders, and the scene of them walking out together was very harmonious.
"Can I come to your birthday party on your birthday?" Xiaochi will be an adult in a few months. The director will hold a birthday party for every adult child. It is a birthday party and a farewell party because they will leave the orphanage.
Xiao Chi suddenly stopped and stared at Pei Lang blankly. Pei Lang also stopped and waited for his answer.
Pei Lang was serious, not one of those hypocritical people who just came for show. Xiao Chi could tell the difference. "Okay. You must come. I'll wait for you."
"Then it's a deal."
"It's a deal."
Arriving at the bus stop, Pei Lang urged Xiao Chi to go back while he waited for the bus.
Pei Lang contacted a private car to go back. He didn't dare to take the high-speed rail or the bus. Only private cars did not check ID cards. Yan Xiuyuan was looking for him, and he would be discovered once he used his ID card.
Even though he would get home late, he didn't dare to stay overnight because staying in a hotel also requires real-name registration.
