Chapter 45 Dinner Without Light
In reality, reporting it is useless; you still have to wait 25 minutes.
Hengxing sat on the steps beside her, tapping her knees lightly with her fingers. She decided to use this spare moment to prepare what she would say when facing Yu Nianqing later.
What a coincidence! I saw the snowball you made. Is that what I meant?
I like you, do you like me too?
Her mind was a jumbled mess. The core point she wanted to make was right on the tip of her tongue, but she couldn't come up with a simple, clear, and appealing way to express it.
Even as the dispensing machine squeaked and spat out her brain-boosting liquid, she still couldn't find the right words.
Forget about all that buildup.
When she comes in, she will tell him directly, "I like you."
Hengxing ran wildly down the hospital path, so anxious that he forgot to put the plastic box containing the brain-boosting liquid into his spatial storage, carrying it with him as he ran.
Standing in front of the dormitory, she took a deep breath and pressed the terminal onto the access card.
The door opened.
She opened the door and found that Yu Nianqing had already taken a shower, her hair was still quite fluffy from being blow-dried, and she was sitting on the sofa looking down at her terminal.
"Captain Heng, you're back!" Yu Nianqing looked up at her, his face unusually serious. "Did you know?"
Hengxing was interrupted, and like a child stuck in a railing, he stood there, unsure whether to continue. After a few seconds of silence, he chose to continue, "Know what?"
Yu Nianqing: "The Empire has declared war on Dunlin."
Heng Xing sat down next to him. "When did this happen?"
Yu Nianqing zoomed in on the virtual screen, "Just now."
He clicked play, "And look at this video."
The video shows a middle-aged male Alpha sitting in a prison cell. His hair is gray, and his face is lined with deep wrinkles. He is quite old. He looks down at the black table and confesses to his crime of stuffing insect eggs into various planets.
Hengxing felt he looked familiar. "Who is he?"
Yu Nianqing: "He is Si Cheng, Si Yun's father."
Hengxing found it unbelievable, "He's the driver?"
She didn't see the driver in person when she woke up; she only saw his photo.
She looks so much older than in the photos.
Yu Nianqing: "He was executed at 8 p.m. on CCTV, which was half an hour ago, on charges of 'treason'."
Hengxing: "Are there any reports about why he's stuffing insect eggs into various planets?"
Yu Nianqing exited the video and scrolled through the news above. "He was tempted by money from Dunlin, so the source of the insect infestation is Dunlin, hence the Empire declared war on it this time."
The word "traitor" appears very frequently in news entries on the virtual screen.
Hengxing: "So, is Siyun really dead?"
Yu Nianqing: "The Ministry of Security has issued an arrest warrant. If you report her whereabouts, you can get a reward of 50,000 star coins."
"However, there is currently no clear evidence to suggest that Si Yun's actions are directly related to his father's. Therefore, netizens hope that the Ministry of State Security will conduct a thorough investigation."
In the past, he would have thought, like other netizens, that Si Yun was not involved and would have spoken out for her.
But now he knows that "Si Yun," who is eradicating the insect infestation, is actually sitting next to him, and that the fleeing Si Yun is the beneficiary of the Si family's rebellion.
Yu Nianqing said, "Captain Heng, I hope the truth can come out."
He turned to look at Hengxing.
She was the biggest victim of the driver's treason; she lost her family, her hometown, her identity, and her honor.
"Hmm." Heng Xing's voice was somewhat low.
"It's getting late, Captain Heng, you should get some rest." After hesitating for a moment, Yu Nianqing gently hugged her. "Although this may sound a bit flippant, I still want to say it, Captain Heng, the past is the past, and we should look forward."
Then he got up, pulled her up, pressed her back, and led her into her room.
Standing by the door, Yu Nianqing said softly, "Good night, see you tomorrow."
He then closed the door and left, leaving her the space to tidy up by herself.
Captain Heng suddenly learned of this sad and distressing news. She should be given some time and space to process her emotions, just as a wounded wild beast needs to find a place to lick its wounds.
The door slammed shut with a loud creak.
Heng Xing sat down by the bed. Contrary to Yu Nianqing's expectations, her heart was not filled with sadness, but rather with a sense of calm after the truth came out.
She probably knows why she didn't leave immediately after her contract to play Si Yun expired.
But why do I still feel empty inside, as if something is missing, just like the discomfort of realizing I haven't brushed my teeth before bed?
She got up and took a quick shower in the bathroom outside, then brushed her teeth.
Leaning lazily against the bathroom door frame, my mouth full of the refreshing scent of mint, I stare at the closed door.
She suddenly remembered that she had forgotten to confess her feelings to Yu Nianqing.
Should we go and tell them now?
But she found it was pitch black through the crack in the door; he was already asleep.
Pulling someone up to talk feels a bit mood-ruining and lacks atmosphere.
Never mind, let's talk about it tomorrow.
Hengxing opened the terminal and decided to make some arrangements; things couldn't be rushed like they were today.
There's a lavishly decorated upscale restaurant next to the hospital, making it a perfect spot for couples to date on Valentine's Day.
They can go out to eat together, and then she can confess her feelings.
I don't have anything to do tomorrow, so let's do it tomorrow.
I don't know if I can get a reservation. Netizens say that this restaurant is very popular and is always packed.
She placed an order online and found it was successful; it seemed there were plenty of spots available.
Perhaps seeing news about insectoid beasts or declarations of war makes people lose the desire to go out and play.
Hengxing subconsciously felt no fear of insects and beasts; perhaps her previous combat experience had desensitized her.
With everything ready, she returned to her room and lay down, satisfied, but before she could even get the covers warm, she bounced up again.
Oh no, I forgot to take my medicine.
She took out the brain-boosting liquid, inserted a straw, and swiftly drank the contents.
Then she lay back in bed, and just to be on the safe side, she sent Yu Nianqing a message in case he had other plans for tomorrow.
Alright, now everything is truly ready.
Hengxing peacefully closed his eyes, preparing to enjoy his rare sleep.
*
At three o'clock in the morning, Yu Nianqing woke up.
He slept very restlessly tonight, probably worried that Captain Heng next door would dwell too much on his past.
He opened his terminal and saw that the person he was worried about had sent him a message.
Nothing will happen, right?
He quickly opened the conversation, his heart pounding in his chest.
Fortunately, nothing serious happened. It was just that Captain Heng invited me to dinner out tomorrow night.
He put down the terminal, and with it, his heart was at ease.
What!
After recalling her message, Yu Nianqing immediately sat up in bed.
Captain Heng invited me to dinner!
I quickly opened my device and searched for this restaurant, and found that it has now become almost a couples' restaurant.
A smile crept onto his lips.
Captain Heng, how am I supposed to sleep with this on?
So, the next morning, he walked out of his room with dark circles under his eyes.
Heng Xing was already awake, sitting on the sofa with her legs crossed. She glanced at him upon hearing the voice, "Mr. Yu, did you have insomnia last night?"
Yu Nianqing smiled at her, "It's nothing, I just didn't sleep very well."
Then she went into the bathroom, washed up, and used concealer to cover her dark circles.
Yu Nianqing: "Captain Heng, what are you going to wear tonight?"
He wanted to wear an outfit that best matched her.
Hengxing: "Just wear what I'm wearing."
Looking at her old hoodie, Yu Nianqing said, "...Captain Heng, isn't this restaurant supposed to be formal?"
"Formal attire?" Heng Xing immediately checked the official website and found that it was indeed formal wear.
Heng Xing: "...I'm not wearing formal attire."
"Then I'll go borrow one later."
Yu Nianqing remembered the dark red embroidered suit she hadn't given away in her spatial storage. "I have one here. Wear this today."
Hengxing glanced at him, then looked down at herself. "I might not be able to fit into your clothes."
"No, this is what I bought for you last time." Yu Nianqing took out the clothes and then the iron, preparing to iron them to make them crisper.
Looking at the embroidery on the cuffs of the jacket, Hengxing remembered the embroidered shirt he had given her that day; it looked like the same set.
She stood up. "I'll do it."
"Never mind, I'll help you, Captain Heng. I feel like you've probably never ironed clothes before," Yu Nianqing refused her help.
Hengxing scratched his head sheepishly, realizing he'd been right.
She walked to the side to watch, saying, "I'll see this time, and I'll be able to do it next time."
After ironing the clothes, Yu Nianqing asked her to give it a try.
Hengxing has gotten a little bigger than when she bought clothes last time, but not by much. Her arms are a bit narrower, but it doesn't really matter.
It was the first time she had worn such elaborate clothing, and she wasn't used to it. Standing in front of the mirror, she looked at herself while rubbing her head, making her already fluffy hair even more messy.
Heng Xing: "Mr. Yu."
Yu Nianqing: "?"
Heng Xing: "Don't you think I look strange?"
Yu Nianqing looked at her frizzy little curly hair and said, "Well, how should I put it, you look like a free-spirited artist."
After thinking it over, he used hairspray to style her hair into a side part.
Hengxing looked at her brand-new self in the mirror, "...I feel like I'm about to go to a restaurant and play the violin for the guests."
Yu Nianqing reassured her guiltily, "How could that be? It looks great."
After hesitating for a moment, she finally spoke up, "Why don't you wash your hair this afternoon and remove the hairspray?"
Finally, before going out for dinner that evening, Hengxing washed her hair to remove the hairspray stuck to her head.
After several hours of internal struggle, she still chose to become an artist.
The restaurant was luxurious and beautifully decorated, with each table spaced far apart so that guests wouldn't disturb each other.
Yu Nianqing ordered the dishes, since this dinner was for him.
He was wearing a blue suit with silver embroidery on the collar, which made him look noble and elegant.
Hengxing leaned towards him and whispered, "I misspoke."
Yu Nianqing: "?"
Heng Xing: "I don't look like someone who comes here to play the violin; I have a lot of hair."
Yu Nianqing turned to look at the bald violinist playing in the middle of the hall and chuckled.
"Captain Heng, I need to use the restroom."
"Go on, go on." Hengxing watched him leave.
A few minutes later, the waiter brought out two small plates of appetizers, and as he placed the plates on the table, the restaurant suddenly went dark.
Hengxing asked him, "Is there a power outage?"
He was at a loss and hurriedly apologized, "Madam, let me ask you something. Please don't worry."
Heng Xing didn't put pressure on him. "Okay, hurry up, my friend is still in the bathroom."
I hope the power isn't out in the bathroom too.
She stood up and decided to go take a look.
