"Xu Xialing, why are you here all alone?" Ning Rong reached out and gently stroked Xu Xialing's head, her slender, fair fingers gleaming like pearls in the setting sun. "Where are your parents?"
When Ning Rong's fingers touched Xu Xialing, Xu Xialing's body stiffened slightly. After a moment, Xu Xialing raised her head slightly to look at Ning Rong, but quickly lowered it again. With a hint of disappointment, Xu Xialing pouted and said, "My mother passed away a long time ago, and my father doesn't like me. I came out to find my brother."
Ning Rong's hand paused slightly, then her stroking of Xu Xialing became even gentler: "Where is your brother?"
Xu Xialing's eyes reddened slightly, and her fingers unconsciously plucked at the bark of the banyan tree beside her: "My brother has been gone for several months now. He clearly said he would be back in three days. Do you think he doesn't want me anymore?"
Ning Rong paused slightly, a hint of heartache flashing across her peach-blossom-like face: "Of course not, your brother might have been delayed by something."
"What's your brother's name? Is he from around here?" Wei Nianlin looked at Xu Xialing's expression, rummaged in his pocket again, but found nothing, so he could only smile helplessly.
Ning Rong looked at Wei Nianlin's actions, slightly pursed her lips, and seemed even more disappointed: "My brother's name is Shang Qi."
"Hernia? Who would have that name?" Wei Nianlin tilted his head slightly, his face full of confusion.
These days, how come people even have such eerie names?
Xu Xialing glared at Wei Nianlin angrily, clenching her little fist: "Shang Qi! The 'Shang' in 'noble'!"
"Pfft."
Ning Rong couldn't help but laugh out loud, but she immediately stopped laughing when she saw the angry look Xu Xialing gave her. However, her beautiful face turned slightly red from holding back her laughter.
A moment later, Ning Rong looked up in confusion. She thought she had just heard laughter from others. But after looking around, she found only a dozen or so people strolling in the distance in the entire park. She turned back, thinking she had misheard.
Thump! Thump! Thump!
Just then, a group of strangely dressed people walked from the park entrance toward Ning Rong and her two companions.
This group of people made no attempt to conceal their fierce aura; even the dust on the ground was kicked up high by their footsteps.
Such a commotion was too obvious, and soon Ning Rong and the other two noticed the group of people who were walking towards them menacingly.
"Oh no, they've found us." Xu Xialing's expression immediately turned panicked when she saw the group of people approaching.
"Who are they?" Ning Rong was also a little scared, but she still pulled Xu Xialing and Wei Nianlin closer to her.
A group of people walked to a distance in front of Ning Rong and her companions. The person at the very front took a few steps forward and stood about ten meters away from them. This person looked at the mark on Xu Xialing's clothes and asked, "Young Miss, did these two people hurt you?"
The person's face was painted with a pattern similar to a Peking Opera mask, and he wore a half-face mask. He was completely wrapped in an indigo-colored garment from head to toe, so no skin was visible, and even his hair was tied up high, extending from the mask on his head.
"The one at the very front is my brother's master," Xu Xialing explained softly to Ning Rong.
Soon, Xu Xialing's expression changed slightly—she sensed a murderous aura emanating from the masked warrior.
Thinking of the masked warrior's cruel and ruthless nature, Xu Xialing gritted her teeth, quickly stood up, and stood in front of Ning Rong and Wei Nianlin. Her eyes, though slightly panicked, were still firm as she looked at the masked warrior: "They didn't hurt me."
Many people in the park had already noticed the commotion and were watching cautiously. There were even a few burly men holding their phones, walking over hesitantly.
The henchmen behind the masked samurai glared at the approaching people and drew their long swords. The next moment, everyone in the park who was looking in their direction turned their heads and walked away from the area.
The underlings were stunned for a moment, then looked at those who had "run away" with utter contempt.
Throughout the entire ordeal, the masked warrior paid no attention to the commotion elsewhere, simply watching Ning Rong and the other two quietly.
"Clang!"
The masked warrior's hand trembled slightly, and a short blade appeared in his hand. In the sunlight, the blade looked terrifyingly sharp.
"So, Miss, it was they who helped you escape?" Even though his face was covered in makeup, Ning Rong and the other two could easily discern the bloodthirsty chill in his eyes.
Xu Xialing quickly waved her hand: "No, I just ran into him..."
"Helping others recklessly could cost you your life." The masked warrior ignored what Xu Xialing said, coldly interrupting her while his gaze swept over Ning Rong and Wei Nianlin.
Finally, the masked warrior turned his gaze to Ning Rong, who looked the largest. In a few flashes, he was already three meters away from Ning Rong, raising the short blade in his right hand and stabbing it fiercely towards Ning Rong's neck!
At the same time, a short blade appeared in his left hand again. He then gently flicked his wrist, and after the blade spun a few times in his hand, he quickly grasped it and slashed it directly at Wei Nianlin's neck.
Even now, his eyes remained unwavering; he wasn't worried at all that his attack would miss. With his strength, killing these two people instantly would be a piece of cake.
He didn't even need to think about how to avoid getting blood on himself, because in his experience, that wouldn't happen.
"No!" Xu Xialing cried out shrilly, then lunged forward, hoping to stop the masked warrior's advance.
Ning Rong had never expected this turn of events. As the short blade drew ever closer, her eyes were filled with despair.
