The afternoon after returning from her vacation, Song Xingyao received a call from Fu Quan, whose tone sounded hesitant.
Song Xingyao asked him twice on the phone, but Fu Quan only said that he had something important to ask and asked her to go back to the Fu family home after get off work.
The unknown always makes people uneasy. After finishing her work, Song Xingyao said goodbye to the professor and hurriedly rushed back.
Seeing the large house completely silent, Fu Quan sat on the sofa, holding a teacup in one hand, but did not drink it. Instead, he stared at the smiling face on the portrait on the opposite wall, lost in thought.
Song Xingyao interrupted, "Dad, what's wrong? What happened?"
Fu Quan said, "Sit down, Yao Yao."
His tone of voice was not as gentle as usual; instead, it was somewhat tense.
Following his gesture, I sat down to the side.
Fu Quan: "Yao Yao, you should break up with Fu Siming."
"Why?" Song Xingyao blurted out.
A hint of confusion flickered in her eyes; he had just praised this man to her face.
"What exactly happened, Dad?" she pressed.
As if thinking about what he was about to say, Fu Quan's tone became more resentful, and his voice was louder than when he had advised the two to separate, "Your disappearance and your mother's death are related to the Fu family."
Song Xingyao recalled the strange push notification in her email.
"Did you see any rumors? Or did someone tell you something?"
Her question made Fu Quan's tone become agitated, with an incredulous expression, "So you knew too, right?"
For the first time, the father and daughter spoke as if they were talking in riddles, creating a strangely tense sense of confrontation.
"You know this news, but you still want to be with him, right?"
The argument seemed to have no basis in reality. Song Xinyao sat on the sofa and calmly retorted, "Even if this matter is related to the Fu family, it has nothing to do with Fu Siming. How old was Fu Siming more than 20 years ago? How could he have gotten involved in something like this?"
"Even so, your mother's death is still inextricably linked to the Fu family and to him."
His somewhat irrational remarks entangled Song Xingyao: "Besides, this is just a marketing article. It makes a lot of sense, but there's no evidence at all."
Fu Quan: "Isn't Fu Siming's silence real enough? He has never denied that this matter is related to the Fu family, even in front of me. Who is he? He is Fu Siming. He has known for a long time, but he has never mentioned it to you."
A series of cold, questioning voices came at Song Xingyao. He knew that Fu Quan was not in a position to listen to him calmly at this moment.
Song Xingyao still couldn't accept letting hearsay and a lack of evidence dictate his choices; he wanted to hear it from him with his own ears.
She didn't want to be a conspiracy theorist, but considering Fu Siming's repeated avoidance of home recently and his unusual behavior, it was hard for her not to think about it.
Why is he not saying anything? Does he not trust himself? Does he think that after this happened, he will definitely leave him?
Thinking of this, Song Xingyao felt a surge of anger rising in her chest.
She stood up, her tone resolute, "No matter what, Dad, I won't break up with him because of a few words from you, but I need to hear him say it with my own ears. I need to know the truth."
Song Xingyao was driving towards Haiyan, but she was distracted and almost rear-ended the car in front of her.
The immense inertia threw him forward, and she felt the seatbelt on his chest making him feel suffocated and unable to breathe.
All she saw was the driver of the car in front sticking his head out and cursing.
Song Xingyao leaned back in his chair, still shaken. He wanted to hear Fu Siming's voice immediately so he could loudly question him about why.
It seemed like it had been a long time since she had been so controlled by her emotions, but Song Xingyao knew that her anger stemmed from this man's distrust and concealment.
It wasn't until she heard the car behind her honking that Song Xingyao came to her senses and calmed down a little.
Aunt Qi opened the door. "Why is the young mistress back so early today?"
After he finished speaking, he realized that her expression was not good, and he immediately fell silent.
Fu Siming returned home early today, unlike in the past few days when he would come home late at night. He still carried the relaxed feeling of being on vacation.
But from the moment he entered the room, Fu Siming sensed that something was wrong with the atmosphere. Fu Xunzhi, who was being led by him, also keenly felt the strange aura between the adults.
The sound of her calling "Mom" faded.
Song Xingyao acted as if she hadn't heard, and instructed Qi Ma: "Qi Ma, take Xunzhi to the garden first, I have something to say to Fu Siming."
The serious tone of her voice made Qi's mother take the child out without delay.
Seeing his parents' expressions, Fu Xunzhi was coaxed out by Qi Ma, who kept turning back to look at him as he went.
Fu Siming had a vague premonition of what Song Xingyao was going to say, so in the end, he couldn't hide it from her anymore, he thought.
He felt a little flustered and wanted to explain, but Song Xingyao interrupted him.
Song Xingyao stood at a distance that she couldn't easily reach with her hands before speaking, "Fu Siming, did you already know that the Fu family was involved in that matter?"
Beneath her calm tone lay a raging storm.
Fu Siming took a step forward, anticipating that he was about to reach out and grab her, but Song Xingyao dodged to the other side.
"Listen to me."
“I’m listening. I’ve been waiting for you to speak all this time, but you haven’t said anything, have you? I’ve given you so many chances.”
The cold tone was punctuated by a sharp barb of barely suppressed grievances.
"This matter is indeed related to the Fu family. It happened when the Sige family wanted to enter Jiangcheng, but they failed to get cooperation from my grandfather. He wanted to take this opportunity to curry favor with the Fu family, so he did this."
