Chapter Sixty-Nine: Break up then, who's afraid of who?!
The color drained from Luo Yan's face instantly, as if someone had poured a bucket of ice water over her head, chilling her to the bone.
She stared blankly at Jiang Sui, opened her mouth as if to say something, but her throat felt like it was filled with cement.
Yesterday, when she said "let's break up" in the car, it was just a harsh remark made in the heat of the moment. She had imagined a hundred different reactions from Jiang Sui: fury, a cold war, or even another forceful kiss. But she never expected such a decisive and swift "yes."
Wait, did they get the wrong script? According to the script, shouldn't he be pinning her against the wall with red eyes, saying in a suppressed, hoarse voice, "Unless I'm dead, don't even think about it"? What's with this instant emptying of the recycle bin?
And he dismissed her with just such a casual remark? His tone was so calm, without even a hint of emotion.
Luo Yan's stubbornness ignited instantly, and her grievances and panic were completely replaced by anger. She stiffened her neck, deliberately raised her head, and tried to make her voice sound tough and indifferent: "Fine! Let's break up! Who's afraid of who? Anyway, I've had enough of you! You're always jealous and crazy, always using tricks and schemes, hiding everything. Being with you is more tiring than writing reports!"
She deliberately spoke loudly and clearly, as if a loud voice could cover up the panic in her heart and... a trace of regret. Her eyes were fixed on Jiang Sui, hoping to find even the slightest bit of reluctance and struggle on his face, or... any emotion would do, as long as it wasn't the stagnant calm she had now.
Jiang Sui just looked at her quietly, his eyes seemed to be covered by a layer of mist. He even nodded slightly, as if confirming a project milestone.
"You're right, it's best if we separate..."
These words, though short, were like a dull knife, slowly cutting into Luo Yan's heart, causing her eyes to redden with pain.
What's so good about it?
Without him, how well could she possibly be doing?
Luo Yan forced back her tears and forced an exaggerated smile: "That's right, I'll only be better off and more relaxed without you! I'm going on a blind date tomorrow to find a gentle, considerate, straightforward, jealous, and obedient puppy who will serve me tea and water every day and care for me. Isn't that better than fighting wits with you, you big fox?"
Jiang Sui's Adam's apple bobbed, her lips moved, but in the end she only said, "Well, I wish you happiness."
"Who cares about your blessings?!"
Luo Yan could no longer hold back, turned and ran, tears streaming down her face like broken beads.
She kept her head down and ran forward, not daring to look back, afraid that if she did, she would throw herself into his arms and cry, telling him not to break up.
You scumbag! You bastard!
He was the one who provoked her first, he was the one who tricked her, and now he's breaking up with her like this? He never really loved her, did he?
Luo Yan ran home crying all the way. When she opened the door, Jiang Xiaosui came running over, meowing, and rubbed against her pants leg.
Looking at the cat that shared the same name as Jiang Sui, her tears fell even harder. She squatted down, hugged Jiang Xiaosui, buried her face in its soft fur, and sobbed, "That bastard... he even played the 'emotionally stable' card with me, he wouldn't even argue... Jiang Xiaosui, he doesn't want us anymore... I'm so sad..."
Jiang Xiaosui seemed to understand but didn't quite, and rubbed her cheek, making soft purring sounds.
After crying for an unknown amount of time, Luo Yan slumped onto the sofa, holding Jiang Xiaosui in her arms.
Looking around, the room was filled with traces of Jiang Sui.
His personal coffee cup sat on the coffee table, unwashed. His jacket, which he had left behind last time, was draped over the sofa, still faintly smelling of mint. On the bookshelf, the professional books he had organized for her were neatly arranged, and he had even placed a bookmark in her favorite book, "Tourism Project Planning." Even in the refrigerator, there were still red bean paste cakes he had specially bought for her, still in their packaging.
She then realized that the answer to the question she had been so fixated on had been hidden all around her all along.
Luo Yan picked up her coat from the sofa and hugged it tightly to her chest. The scent on the coat made the tears she had managed to hold back fall again.
She took out her phone, opened the chat window with Jiang Sui, and hovered her finger over the screen, wanting to send him a message, wanting to ask him if he had really thought it through, wanting to tell him that she regretted it, and wanted to ask if what she had just said could be disregarded.
I typed and deleted, deleted and typed again, but in the end I still didn't send anything.
She has backbone too. Since he can break up with her so decisively, why should she be the one to back down first?
At worst, we can just treat this relationship as a dream!
Thinking about it, Luo Yan raised her hand and wiped her face decisively. Her hands were wet, and she wiped them again, as if she couldn't get them clean.
She stared blankly at her hands, a sudden wave of sadness washing over her, and she slumped down in despair.
She couldn't understand it. How could they have really broken up? She just wanted him to comfort her, apologize, and everything would still be fine.
Is this... a real suicide attempt?
The next morning, Luo Yan went to work with huge dark circles under her eyes, looking as haggard as if she had been drained dry.
Looking at her like this, Liu Su asked cautiously, "Sister Yan, did you go save the galaxy last night? Your face... looks terrible."
"Don't even mention it." Luo Yan waved her hand weakly. "I got into a fight and was badly injured."
"With President Jiang?" Liu Su's eyes lit up, and she leaned over to gossip, "Needless to say, in the end President Jiang will definitely bow his head, admit his mistake, and apologize."
"Apologize my ass!" Luo Yan said irritably, "We broke up."
"What?!" Liu Su was so shocked she almost jumped up. "Sister Yan, you're not kidding, are you? You actually had the heart to break up with such a jerk?"
"You like it? Would you like me to introduce it to you?"
Liu Su chuckled, then, noticing Luo Yan's increasingly strange expression, quickly waved her hand and said, "I was just kidding! President Jiang can only be you, Sister Yan! You know me, I only have eyes for my beloved!" She rubbed her hands together and hurried back to her workstation.
Luo Yan spent the entire day in a daze, flipping through documents in her hand while her mind was filled with thoughts of Jiang Sui.
My phone remained silent throughout, without even a single news notification. Today, the whole world seemed much quieter than usual.
Just as she was about to reach out to Jiang Sui, her phone rang. It was Zeng Rong calling.
"Yanyan! Something's happened to President Jiang!"
Zeng Rong's loud voice came from the other end of the phone, making Luo Yan's eyelids twitch. She quickly asked, "What's wrong? What happened to Jiang Sui?"
He applied for leave!
"..."
Luo Yan almost choked.
"Granny Rong! If you're so bored, go ahead and browse around with handsome guys. Taking a vacation doesn't make it seem like he's dead!"
Zeng Rong sighed, "You don't know, this is the first time he's applied for leave in all these years at Feiyang, and he's been on leave for half a month. Even President Luo was shocked!"
"It's been so long, and you haven't said where you're going?"
"No, he didn't come to the company this morning... You didn't know he was on vacation? Is there... something wrong with you guys?"
"We... broke up."
"ah?!"
Zeng Rong gasped dramatically, speechless for a long time.
"What day is it today? One bombshell after another, shocking me to death. When did this happen?"
"Last night..."
"You two usually argue, but how did it escalate to this? Uh... are you really breaking up?"
"They really broke up..."
"......"
Zeng Rong was uncharacteristically silent for a moment before saying, "President Jiang seems a bit off. Could it be that she's heartbroken and can't think straight?"
"What could he possibly be upset about? He's perfectly calm!"
Luo Yan felt a nameless anger rising in her heart whenever she thought of Jiang Sui's nonchalant demeanor last night.
"Who can't live without whom? He probably just felt stifled being with me, figured it out, and is having a great time somewhere right now!"
"Your mouth is as hard as steel! ... Yan Yan, take my advice. If you still like him, don't waste your time like this. Take the initiative to contact him and ask him what's going on."
"I'm not contacting him!"
Luo Yan angrily hung up the phone, but her mind was in complete turmoil, as if it had been bombed and was shattered into pieces.
Why did Jiang Sui suddenly take a vacation? Is it really because of the breakup and being in a bad mood?
Last time, after he said he wanted to "take a step back," he left the project team without even saying goodbye and went to Zongxian. This time, he agreed to break up and immediately took a vacation the next day. He's quite efficient. It has nothing to do with her? Not even a dog would believe that!
After finally getting off work at five o'clock, Luo Yan couldn't hold back any longer. Without staying a minute longer, she grabbed her bag and ran to Jiang Sui's house.
Upon reaching the door, I unlocked it with the password and rushed inside.
The room was still empty. Looking around, there was a suitcase in the corner of the living room with a coat haphazardly draped over it, the one Jiang Sui wore yesterday.
Judging from the shoes placed by the door, he should be home, but why is it so quiet? It's eerily quiet, as if no one is home.
Could he really be having a mental breakdown and have committed suicide at home?
Luo Yan's mind immediately conjured up images of crime scenes from various legal programs, and she felt a surge of panic and fear. She wondered, if something really happened, should she call 110 or 120 first? Oh no, pshaw! She should find the person first; this wasn't the time to think about that!
Thinking of this, she walked towards the bedroom, hesitated for a moment, and slowly pushed open the door.
The room was dark, with only a faint light filtering through the gaps in the curtains, and a faint smell of alcohol filled the air.
Luo Yan turned on the light and was shocked to see Jiang Sui lying motionless on the bed.
She quickly went over and checked his breath, then breathed a sigh of relief. Thank goodness, he was just asleep. But what's with the strong smell of alcohol in the whole room?
With Jiang Sui's incredible alcohol tolerance, how much did he drink to get this drunk?
Luo Yan didn't dwell on the question for long. She touched his forehead; his temperature was normal. Then she patted his face and asked, "Jiang Sui, how are you? Are you alright?"
Then, she suddenly noticed a blurry... lipstick stain on his shirt collar!
His hand suddenly stopped, then clenched tightly.
Less than 24 hours after the breakup, that jerk is already out having fun? And she cried all night last night!
Men really are... all of them are big jerks!
