The person on the stretcher was wrapped up like a dumpling, with gauze on their chest, arms and legs stained red with blood. The only exposed part, the back of their hand, was receiving an IV drip, and their face was covered with a breathing mask.
"Lu Qin, where is the Chairman?"
Wu Ming grabbed the man with the sling, his eyes searching frantically.
"Hey." Lu Qin pointed to the mummy being carried away on a stretcher, shook off Wu Ming, and grabbed Qin Ge's hand. "Dr. Qin, you have to save the captain..."
"Holy crap! Why didn't you say it was Yu Wei earlier?!"
Qin Ge grabbed Lu Qin and ran wildly in the direction the stretcher had left.
He was just joking about which "god" got beaten up like that, turns out it was Yu Wei.
"We also... Oh my god, where is everyone?"
Wu Ming turned his head, intending to pull Zhou Siyu away, only to find that she had disappeared without him noticing.
Although Zhou Siyu was gone, a large group of people suddenly surrounded him.
"Sir, what are the battle casualties?"
"Commander, operation report..."
"Commander..."
"Commander..."
"..."
"Stop!" Wu Ming raised his hand to silence the noise, looked around, met the confused looks of the crowd, and pinched his brow helplessly. "Go and rest first, we'll discuss it again at a meeting tomorrow."
The people who had been surrounding them scattered like birds and beasts.
Wu Ming looked up and was shocked by what he saw in the corner.
The personal guards brought by Yu Wei were lined up neatly. Although their clothes were somewhat tattered, they were dressed very well. Their dark faces showed no impatience as they listened attentively to their superior's instructions.
"Regiment commanders, step forward and verify the number of personnel in your respective regiments!"
"Reporting to the commander, the regiment should have 1,500 men, but 370 men are present! Report complete."
"The Second Regiment should have 1,600 men; 160 men are present! Report complete!"
"The Third Regiment..."
Hearing the shocking numbers, Wu Ming felt as if his heart was bleeding.
Yu Wei led a brigade, plus special operations forces, totaling more than 10,000 people. Only more than 3,000 people returned alive. The casualty figures were the worst since Yu Wei took command.
If he makes such a mess right after taking office, everyone will have a problem with him, and it will be difficult to explain to the committee.
The bright red lettering that read "Operation in Progress" was glaringly obvious. Zhou Siyu paced back and forth anxiously, glancing at the door frame every now and then, and continued to pace back and forth restlessly.
"Why don't you sit down and rest for a while..."
Lu Qin's eyes were bloodshot, and his eyes revealed unconcealed worry.
"I'm fine..."
Zhou Siyu waved his hand and kept rummaging in his pocket. After searching for a long time without finding what he wanted, he became increasingly frustrated.
Nothing pleases me.
Lu Qin rummaged in his pocket for a while, then pulled out a lollipop from the corner of his pocket and handed it to Zhou Siyu. "Eat this. Smoking is bad for your health."
Zhou Siyu took the lollipop, quickly peeled off the wrapper, and bit into it.
The sweet aroma spread in his mouth, and his irritability dissipated considerably. Lu Qin breathed a sigh of relief, sat back in his chair, and stared blankly at the door frame.
Zhou Siyu found a seat and sat down. Neither of them spoke, and they both lowered their heads to think.
Wu Ming walked to the corner, using the wall for cover, and stared blankly ahead, a strange emotion in his eyes.
As night fell, bright streetlights illuminated the wide avenue, and the twinkling lights of tall buildings reflected in the glass, making the empty corridors seem even more spacious.
Feeling the weight on his shoulder, Lu Qin, who had been resting with his eyes closed, slowly opened them. After hesitating for a moment, he took off his coat and covered Zhou Siyu with it.
“Yu…Wei…”
Her long eyelashes trembled slightly, Zhou Siyu murmured as she pulled her coat tighter, gently nuzzled Lu Qin's shoulder, and fell into a deep sleep.
Lu Qin slowly raised his hand, intending to put his arm around Zhou Siyu's shoulder, but suddenly seemed to remember something and quickly withdrew his hand as if he had been electrocuted.
"Yuwei!"
Zhou Siyu woke up with a start, sat up straight, and her coat slipped off onto the chair.
Looking around in confusion, Zhou Siyu's amber eyes slowly focused. When she looked up and met a pair of dark eyes, she froze for a moment before quickly looking away.
"Sorry, I accidentally fell asleep."
Zhou Siyu subtly moved back and sat on the other side of the row of chairs, staring blankly at the operating room door.
"You go and rest first. I'll watch over things here, Captain." Lu Qin concealed the fleeting emotion in his eyes, which were filled with worry. "Don't worry, Captain... will be alright."
"I'm fine." Zhou Siyu shook her head, her eyes clear. "You're still injured, go back and rest first. I'll look after Yu Wei here."
"Never mind," Lu Qin sighed. "Let's wait together."
"Can you tell me what you went through?"
Zhou Siyu stared at the operating room, then slowly opened her mouth, her hoarse voice echoing in the empty corridor.
"The news leaked out, and the rebels left a portion of their forces to continue the siege, luring us into a trap. After the captain arrived, they sent out a large number of troops to attack, forcing us to retreat with the civilians..."
"He's the one covering the rear again, isn't he?"
Zhou Siyu looked up, took a deep breath, and slowly calmed herself down. Staring at the white wall, she suppressed her emotions and uttered each word slowly and deliberately, "He's always like this, he never considers other people's feelings..."
"The captain..."
“You don’t need to explain, this is what he should do.”
Lu Qin looked up in surprise, unsure whether Zhou Siyu was speaking out of anger or telling the truth.
The communicator kept flashing and vibrating. Zhou Siyu didn't want to leave the operating room, so she simply answered the call directly.
"President, something terrible has happened! The Seventeenth Planet project has encountered a major problem..."
