Chapter 139 Nearly Dead

"So... he could die at any moment, is that right?"

Zhou Siyu's voice suddenly came from the doorway, and everyone turned around in surprise. Yu Zhen was anxiously pulling Zhou Siyu out.

"Why did you come here?" Lin Ling quickly composed herself, walked to his side, and said seriously, "You should go and rest now."

"Xiao Ling, let him come over."

Grandpa Yu sighed and beckoned to Zhou Siyu. Zhou Siyu walked to his side, lowered his eyes and said, "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to eavesdrop on your conversation."

"Knowing you have exceptional hearing, please sit down." Grandpa Yu forced a smile and patted the empty seat next to him. "It seems you've been kept in the dark as well, so I won't scold you."

"Grandpa, I'm sorry, I..."

Zhou Siyu buried his head even deeper. He was the one who had personally rendered Yu Wei half-dead, plunging the Yu family into immense grief.

"I can't bring myself to say it's not your fault," Grandpa Yu sighed. "This isn't entirely your responsibility. Xiao Wei is an adult, and he has to take responsibility for his choices."

If Yu Wei had been more careful, he shouldn't have put Zhou Siyu in an unfamiliar environment, and he certainly shouldn't have used the damaged mecha to show off.

The battlefield requires not only the courage to forge ahead, but also a correct assessment of one's own strength and the battlefield situation. Yu Wei failed to do so, which is why he failed.

He lost, and he must bear the consequences, including paying with his life.

"Don't be so pessimistic." Lin Ling patted Zhou Siyu on the shoulder. "There's still a 50% chance of him being resurrected, you have to believe in him."

As soon as he finished speaking, he suddenly realized that everyone was staring at him, which sent a chill down his spine. Lin Ling shrugged and awkwardly touched his nose: "Well, you have to be more easygoing..."

"It's rare to hear you say something so pleasant."

Yu Jue couldn't help but complain that Lin Ling was a straightforward straight man whose dictionary contained no concept of "being cautious in speech and action".

“Yes, I believe him.” Zhou Siyu clenched her fists and looked at Lin Ling, saying, “I… want to see him.”

"After the New Year," Grandpa Yu patted Zhou Siyu's hand, his eyes full of affection, "we'll go see him together after the New Year."

“Dad, you can’t go.” Yu Mao shook his head. “The matter of Xiao Wei’s accident has been suppressed. It’s not appropriate for you to show your face now.”

"Fine, fine, fine. It's bad enough that no one told me my own grandson had an accident, but now I'm being deprived of my visitation rights too?"

"Dad, that's not what my eldest brother meant. The situation is very unpredictable right now, so we must be careful."

"Fine, so you mean I'm inconsiderate and don't know how to behave? Very well, you've all grown up and are now starting to look down on this old man, are you?"

“Grandpa, that’s not what my eldest and second uncles meant.” Zhou Siyu comforted Grandpa Yu and explained, “What my eldest and second uncles meant was that Yu Wei’s condition is currently unclear. Rather than making you run around and worry, unable to eat or sleep, it would be better to wait until he wakes up before letting him come to take care of you, so that you won’t get angry and hurt yourself.”

"Shouldn't I be angry?" Grandpa Yu's expression softened considerably, and he continued, following Zhou Siyu's lead, "That Yu Wei won't listen to advice. I've told him so many times to 'think it over before acting,' but he just ignores it all. He has no plan at all and does whatever comes to mind..."

Zhou Siyu picked at his ear and listened to the reprimand with his head down.

Although these words were directed at Yu Wei, they were also a veiled criticism of him, indicating that the old man was still quite angry with him.

But the facts are clear: he has to bear the consequences of his actions.

Lin Ling and the others also lowered their heads and dared not speak, listening attentively to the old man's admonition. Only Yu Zhen either lowered his head and played with his fingers or stroked his chin thoughtfully, not listening to a single word, mainly just keeping company.

"I'm too lazy to bother with you all." Grandpa Yu raised his hand, and Zhou Siyu tactfully placed the tea he had poured into his hand. Grandpa Yu took a sip of tea and gently put down the cup: "I don't interfere with the ideas you young people have, but you should always let the family know in advance."

“We remember, Dad.”

Lin Ling and the others spoke in unison, waiting for Grandpa Yu to continue.

"Alright, everyone's been working hard for the past few days, go back to your rooms and rest."

Grandpa Yu waved his hand, and everyone stood up and lined up to leave in turn.

"Xiaoyu, stay and walk with me."

Zhou Siyu abruptly turned his foot around after just stepping out the door, and Yu Zhen mouthed "I wish you peace" before quickly slipping away.

Grandpa Yu stood up, patted Zhou Siyu on the shoulder, and led him down the stairs, through a small door, into the spacious back garden.

"I'm sorry to trouble you by marrying Xiao Wei."

Grandpa Yu walked side by side with Zhou Siyu, his hands behind his back, on the cobblestone path. He stopped under a fringe tree and pointed to it, saying, "This tree was planted by me for Xiaowei's grandmother. She was not yet twenty when she came to my side. She was young and lively, and her smile was like a little sun, very warm. That's what attracted me to her the most."

Yu Wei's grandmother was the youngest daughter of a duke in the Etolan Empire. She was very much loved and had a lively and cheerful nature. At a banquet, she was deeply attracted to Yu Wei's grandfather and married her sweetheart as she wished.

However, married life was not as wonderful as she had imagined. Grandpa Yu was stationed on the frontier year-round and could only come home for a short period of time each year when he went home to report on his duties at the end of the year. As the eldest daughter-in-law, she not only had to manage all the affairs of the family, but also maintain interpersonal relationships, take care of her parents-in-law, and clean up the mess left by her brother-in-law.

The only things that could make her happy were the letters and rare items her husband sent. Time and distance did not diminish their feelings for each other; on the contrary, they brought their hearts closer together.
