"Auntie, this is Shanshan. Is Yan Can home?"
When Leng Shan called, Yan Can was watching TV on the sofa. She shook her head at her mother who answered the phone. Although her mother didn't understand, she knew her daughter and trusted her decision.
So Yan's mother said, "Cancan went out without saying where she was going. Is there something you need from her?"
That's a complete lie.
Can Can is the apple of their family's eye. Whenever they go out, her family members take turns calling her to find out her location and ask when she will be home.
But Leng Shan didn't realize anything was wrong. Instead, she said, "We decided to go to the hot springs on the spur of the moment. I asked her if she wanted to go, but she didn't answer when I called. I thought she was angry with me, but it turns out she left her phone at home."
Yan's mother glanced at the sofa and then asked Leng Shan, "Did you two have a conflict?"
Leng Shan sighed, "We had a little accident when we went out the day before yesterday. It's all Ling Yu's fault. He insisted on arguing with me over such a small thing. During our argument, he accidentally pushed Yan Can into the middle of the road..."
At this point, she suddenly paused, realizing that she had said a bit too much.
Yan's mother's heart jumped into her throat.
In the middle of the road, and then what?
What were the road conditions like at the time? Were there many cars? Were there many people? Was Cancan injured? Was she criticized or verbally abused by uninformed passersby?
Leng Shan felt no remorse at all, and even said with some grievance, "Auntie, please don't take it to heart. Actually, the situation sounded dangerous, but nothing really happened. Yan Can wasn't injured either, but she seems to be angry with me. She hasn't replied to my messages for the past two days."
She absolved herself of responsibility with just a few words.
But Yan's mother's face had already turned cold. "Cancan didn't tell us about this. I want to hear Cancan's side of the story."
After saying that, he hung up the phone.
Leng Shan angrily complained to her family that Yan's mother had taken her anger out on her, even though Yan Can was perfectly fine. The Leng family also felt that Yan's mother was too rude and condemned her.
Yan's mother was completely unaware of this. She came to Yan Can's side and grabbed her to examine her thoroughly.
"Mom, I'm okay."
Even though Yan Can said that, her mother was still worried and asked her what happened at the time and whether the things she was worried about had happened.
Yan Can remained silent for a moment.
Yan's mother: "Can Can, Mom needs to know the truth."
Even if Yan Can didn't say anything, they would still check the surveillance footage to see what was going on.
Yan Can had no choice but to compromise.
Although she never intended to cover anything up for others.
She said there was heavy traffic at the time, but she was probably lucky. Although she was hit by a car, she was not injured, but she did get a scolding.
But passersby didn't know she was pushed out; they only knew that she suddenly ran into the traffic, almost causing several cars to collide and potentially leading to a tragedy that could affect countless families.
She made it sound simple, but Yan's mother knew that the situation at the time was many times more complicated.
Unbeknownst to them, Can Can suffered such an unexpected disaster, and the person who caused it all still righteously shirked responsibility, even implying that Can Can was petty and calculative!
Suppressing her anger, Yan's mother patted Yan Can's head.
"Mom went to help Auntie cook."
...
Dinner was almost ready, but Yan's father hadn't returned.
Yan's mother said, "Your father still has some things to do at school, so let's eat first without waiting for him."
No sooner had Yan Can finished speaking than her phone rang again.
Having learned from the precedent of "Leng Shan," Yan's mother paid close attention to incoming calls, asking, "Who's calling?"
Yan Can said, "Ling Yu."
Yan's mother gestured for her to answer the phone and put it on speakerphone, which Yan Can did.
Compared to Leng Shan, Ling Yu was much more polite. She first asked Yan Can what she was doing, whether she had gone home, and whether she had disturbed their family's meal. After expressing her apologies, she asked Yan Can if she had calmed down, and then told her about what happened that day.
Instead of shirking responsibility, he immediately admitted his mistake.
"To be honest, the responsibility for this is entirely mine. I knew that Shanshan had been naughty and unruly since she was a child, but I still let her fool around on the roadside, which almost caused Yan Can to get hurt."
Ling Yu's attitude was very good, but Yan's mother's expression turned even worse.
They knew what they had done wrong, but they didn't tell them about it immediately after it happened. Instead, they called Leng Shan after she did. It's obvious that the call was related to Leng Shan.
Either Leng Shan said something to him, or they got together.
He told Yan Can not to be angry and promised that he would keep Leng Shan in check in the future and would never let the same thing happen again.
Before Yan Can could say anything, 377 had already started cursing.
"Pah!"
"Saying it won't happen a second time is all nonsense!"
"The second time you broke up, it directly caused the original owner to die in a car accident!"
And these are exactly what Yan Can wanted to say.
Ling Yu knew she was in the wrong and that calling at this time was a bit presumptuous, so she explained the situation and said she would visit him another day before hanging up.
"Mom, eat your vegetables, don't be angry."
Yan Can was picking up food with her chopsticks when her mother looked at her helplessly. "Can Can, aren't you angry?"
Although my daughter rarely cries since birth and usually doesn't have many emotional fluctuations, isn't it too calm to face such a terrible thing?
Yan Can said, "I'm angry, so I've decided to ignore them."
If Leng Shan were here, she would definitely point her finger at her and say how petty she was, that nothing had happened yet she was going to break off their friendship and shut out her childhood sweetheart.
Hearing Yan Can say that, her mother didn't think she was making a mountain out of a molehill. Instead, she thought she was very cute. "No matter what decision you make, Mom will support you."
...
After dinner, Yan's mother went to her study to work, while Yan Can returned to her room and complained about the plot with 377.
Yan Can, Leng Shan, and Ling Yu were born on the same day, month, and year.
Yan Can is naturally aloof, calm, and detached; Leng Shan is innocent, lively, and cheerful; and Ling Yu is deep, melancholic, and taciturn. Therefore, it is always Leng Shan, who is like a little sun but is also innocent, who gets into trouble, and Ling Yu and Yan Can work together to clean up her messes.
During her youth, Ling Yu fell in love with Leng Shan, while also developing some other feelings for Yan Can.
Six months later, the same thing happened again: Yan Can died in a car accident, Leng Shan and Ling Yu broke up, and went to different universities.
By chance, Ling Yu discovered that Leng Shan had unknowingly transformed into a stern and unsmiling Yan Can. He regretted his past actions and vowed to find the innocent and cheerful little sun he once knew.
Four years later, the two got back together. Having let go of the past, they visited Yan Can's grave for the first time to express their belated apologies and announce their marriage.
Even their wedding was held in a cemetery, so that their best friends could witness their happiness.
Yan Can: What do people do?
377: Not human!
