Chapter 14

Chapter 14

The morning light shines through the misty branches and leaves, illuminating the forest like divine light, and the cries of birds can be heard from time to time.

"Ha." Wang Sheng opened his eyes dazedly, stretched, and still had no idea where he was.

He staggered to his feet and prepared to go to the stream he had found last night to wash his face and clear his head.

There's nothing as comfortable as a bed in this wilderness. Why does his neck feel a little stiff?

Wang Sheng twisted his neck and turned his head to see that the person who was sitting there meditating last night was gone. He was completely frightened awake and looked for the person everywhere.

"Master? Where are you?"

He hurriedly packed up the backpack, and just as he was about to carry it on his back to chase the man, his father-in-law flew over with a bug in his mouth, stepped on the package on the stone and began to enjoy his breakfast.

Wang Sheng bent over and sighed. He was so scared that he didn't even take Shi Ye's package and didn't see it.

He had a false alarm, so he put down his backpack like an old farmer and drank some water to calm himself down.

"Hey, where's your master?"

My father-in-law was too busy eating bugs to pay attention to him.

Wang Sheng thought for a moment, then he looked around and saw that there was no one around, so he broke off some pancake skin and came over to squat down.

"Grandpa, come here, what's so delicious about insects? Eat some sesame cakes, suck on them."

He threw the broken pieces of pancake on the ground. Seeing that his father-in-law was not taking the bait, he clicked his tongue and broke off some of the meat filling in the middle and threw it on the ground.

"Slurp, this is delicious."

After finishing his meal, my father-in-law took a break, pretended not to notice the pancake on the ground, and cleaned his hair.

Seeing that it was loose, Wang Sheng threw another piece in. This time he didn't believe it could still be put in.

Sure enough, my father-in-law flew down not long after and ate the pancake bit by bit.

Wang Sheng clapped his hands and snorted. If you want to fight him, wait until you become an adult.

There was no one guarding the package, and the only watchdog had been bribed. Wang Sheng hummed a song guiltily, and when he confirmed again and the bird still hadn't returned, he quickly opened the package to take a look.

"Let me see what good stuff there is." It would be great if there was a secret book of cultivation that could make him the best in the world.

He took out a few pieces of talisman paper, which he couldn't understand, but stuffed them directly into his pocket.

Seeing another scale, he pondered it for a while, thinking for a long time before remembering what it was called. Forget it, I won't take this one, but if I take this one, it will be too obvious.

But the rest were either clothes or talisman paper, and there were no secret manuals on cultivation at all.

However, there was something hidden in the corner. Wang Sheng thought it looked familiar, so he wanted to take it out and have a look. Then, a voice came from the woods.

"What are you doing?"

Wang Sheng subconsciously packed up the package and shook his head: "No, nothing, I just wanted to help you pack it up."

Under the mist, a tall man in black clothes stood in the distance. He had a gloomy aura around him and was more frightening than a ghost.

Shi Ye walked closer step by step. Wang Sheng saw that the bag around his waist containing paper figures and talismans was moving. He swallowed and thought, was he going to catch ghosts again?

Shi Ye seemed not to notice that he had stolen the talisman paper. He packed the package and slung it over his shoulder, then took out the immortal plate to explore the way.

Wang Sheng had just packed up his things and walked ahead with his stuff on his back, clearing the way for others.

Over the next few days, the two men traveled during the day and rested at night. Wang Sheng slept through the night, but every time he woke up in the morning, Shi Ye was gone. Whenever Shi Ye returned, he was covered in something foul and his pockets were making a lot of noise. Wang Sheng wondered if he had truly become an immortal and didn't even need to sleep anymore.

Wang Sheng, who had been sleeping on the ground for days, could no longer drive and lagged far behind. The soles of his shoes were worn away, and a fat bird was nestled against his neck.

The originally bright fur of the eunuch has now become much duller. The man and the bird shook hands and made peace, relying on each other for survival, looking very haggard.

Wang Sheng couldn't stand it anymore, so he sat down on the ground.

"I'm not leaving. I won't leave even if you kill me."

Shi Ye frowned, stopped and looked at them. The father-in-law trembled and dared not look at Shi Ye, and stuck closer to Wang Sheng.

Wang Sheng: "Master, we've been walking for so long. Where are you going? At the very least, can we find an inn to stay overnight? Eating sesame cakes and wild game every day is unbearable for anyone."

He had never been so tired when he was alone in the world before.

Seeing that Wang Sheng really wasn't leaving, Shi Ye could only put away the immortal plate and take a look at the terrain.

He half squatted down and stepped on the footprints on the ground. The footprints were still fresh, which meant that there must be someone living nearby.

Shi Ye: "If we go a little further, we should be able to find someone."

Wang Sheng heard the dawn and quickly got up and said, "Really? That's great, let's go!"

He suddenly changed his usual behavior and rushed forward. The eunuch flew over Wang Sheng's head, chattering.

Sure enough, not long after, he saw a roof in the distance, with smoke from firewood still emitting from it. There were many well-maintained crops around it, and people were working with their backs bent.

Wang Sheng ran to the edge of the field and asked politely, "Old man, is there an inn nearby?"

An old farmer looked up, wiped the sweat from his face, and said doubtfully, "An inn? There's not one for dozens of miles around here." He paused, and seeing that Wang Sheng and the other two looked friendly, he kindly said, "If you don't mind, why not stay at my house for a night? I don't have much to offer you, but I do have some simple food."

When Wang Sheng heard that there was no inn within dozens of miles, he didn't hesitate and smiled in an especially pleasing way. He replied, "Then we won't be polite with you, old man. We really want to rest for a night. Just give us a woodshed. We won't be picky."

The old woman holding a sickle beside them quickly waved her hand: "That won't work! You two follow me, my house is just up ahead. Old man, you take your time at the back, I'll lead these two in the front first."

The old man groaned, then pulled his left leg out of the ground with some difficulty and walked out with one foot deep and one foot shallow.

Shi also noticed this and asked the old woman, "Grandma, what's wrong with you, old man?"

The old woman led the way, sighed, and said, somewhat reluctantly, "Just last year, my husband was working in the fields when he slipped and fell down a slope, breaking his leg. But at least he can still limp along. Otherwise, life would have been very difficult."

After the old woman finished speaking, Wang Sheng immediately went back and carried the old man on his back. The old man was startled and struggled to get down: "It's okay, young man, you go first, I'll catch up with you soon."

"Don't worry. Besides, I'm already bothering you by asking you to stay with me. Just let me help you out."

Shi Ye saw that the man who had long been complaining about being unable to walk was now full of energy and didn't look tired at all. A smile played on his lips, but it soon disappeared.

The old man couldn't persuade Wang Sheng to carry him all the way home. The old woman was also afraid of tiring Wang Sheng, so she walked very quickly and soon arrived at a mud house with a locked fence.

"It's time for you two."

A pregnant young woman sewing in the yard saw this, put down her things, came over, helped the old man down, and asked timidly, "Mom and Dad, who are these two..."

The old woman said: "They are here to stay. Please go and sit down. I will take care of it here."

The house is not big, but very simple. Dried peppers and millet are drying in the yard. Seeing this, Wang Sheng misses his own small yard.

The old woman brought two stools over and said to them, "Hurry up and sit down. I'll go and clean up the house with you. It will be ready in a moment."

Wang Sheng: "Okay, thank you, mother-in-law."

He was sweet-talking and came to work again. The old woman scolded him and went to get bedding.

Seeing that Shi was also wandering around and not sitting down, Wang Sheng asked him, "What's wrong? There are... dirty things in broad daylight." There were ordinary people in the yard, and he almost let the cat out of the bag, but fortunately he changed his mouth in time.

The village wasn't big, and the fences of every house weren't high, so you could see every other door at a glance. He had gotten used to being suspicious everywhere he went, so he retracted his gaze and sat down next to Wang Sheng.

A married woman is expected to obey her husband, who is in charge of the outside affairs and also be taught by her mother-in-law. However, this family treats this daughter-in-law very well. The woman was not idle either, pouring tea for her father-in-law and the two guests.

She put down her tea and explained to Wang Sheng and the others, "My husband is doing hard labor outside and won't be back for a while. There are only three of us at home. Please forgive me, both of you."

"You've been having a lot of dreams lately."

The woman was stunned and asked, "What?"

The handsome man in front of her suddenly asked her a question that made no sense, and the woman hadn't reacted yet.

"My mother-in-law is also in poor health and is constantly taking medicine. Your pregnancy is unstable, so your husband has no choice but to go out to work to earn money to buy medicine."

Woman: "This..." She held her stomach, at a loss, and could only look at the old man.

The old man also looked flustered and asked quickly, "How did you know that? Could it be, could it be that you two are immortals?"

Ordinary people would spend their entire lives thinking that such a thing was the arrival of an immortal, otherwise how could he predict everything correctly? In addition, Shi Ye's immortal-like appearance further strengthened the old man's belief.

Wang Sheng turned his head and twisted his mouth, then returned to normal. He didn't know if he was a fairy or not, but he was definitely not a human. However, this look was indeed impressive, so it was no wonder the old man had misjudged him.

Shi Ye raised an eyebrow and glanced at him before saying, "That's not hard to guess. The house is filled with the smell of medicine, which contains astragalus, angelica, white atractylodes and other abortion-protecting herbs. And mother-in-law also looks pale, with blue eyes and qi and blood deficiency."

Wang Sheng was also stunned by what he heard. Could it be that Shi Ye had really predicted this? The old man immediately responded, "That's right, that's right."

"It's been a bad year for our family. My daughter-in-law has a miserable life. She's been pregnant three times, the first one was miscarried, the second died before the full month, and the third one, well, let's not talk about it. If my leg hadn't been broken, I could still go out to work with my son."

The daughter-in-law went over to comfort him: "Dad, you don't have to blame yourself..."

Their family has a deep bond, but Yu Shiye didn't feel much about it. He just wanted to repay them for taking him in.

“But it’s not unsolvable.”
