Chapter 9 Do you want to make fish maw?

This is the power of free-range chickens raised by fishermen. Purely organic farming, it takes at least a year, and sometimes two or three years, for a chicken to grow from broiler to market weight. They eat fish, shrimp, and crab shells, and drink mountain spring water. The meat is simply superb. Call it a fat chicken!

He knocked on the door again, and after a while the door opened, revealing a dark face: "Who is it? Ah, Brother Yang, what brings you here?"

This was naturally Hou Banshuang, whom I had just met that afternoon. He smiled and said, "There must be something to do here. Have you eaten yet? Also, you should call me Uncle Yang. Why do you call me Brother Yang? It's about seniority."

That's why he didn't recognize Wang Ming in the afternoon; the young man immediately called him Brother Yang, without considering the next generation of kids.

Wang Ming laughed heartily and said, "Don't people call each other 'brother' now? Brother Fugui taught me that. He said his name is Shu Xianlao."

Lu Wuyai glared angrily: "He's giving me a lecture. Don't follow him. Come on, let's go inside and eat. Your uncle brought you and your mother some chicken soup."

Hou Banshuang's family was preparing dinner. Later that evening, the bok choy Xiao Le's family had chosen wasn't cooked, but left to cool. Dinner would consist of rice and a soup with small mixed fish.

When Xiao Lejia saw Lu Wuyai return carrying a pot and a plate, she asked in surprise, "Yanzi, what are you doing?"

Lu Wuyai said, "Aren't you having dinner here? I'd like to invite you to try my cooking. I learned to be a chef in Kyoto. I'll make you two dishes."

He opened the pressure cooker lid, and the aroma of chicken soup rose into the air, like a sacred force breaking the seal and drifting everywhere.

As soon as Ao Xiaoniu smelled the aroma, his stomach immediately rumbled, and Song Qiumin subconsciously swallowed.

Halfway through cooking, the chicken soup turned from clear to golden yellow, the chicken meat turned white, and red goji berries floated on the surface, creating a beautiful contrast of red, white, and yellow.

The snow-white chicken looked incredibly tender at first glance. Lu Wuyai scooped up a bowlful, and the aroma intensified. The white chicken shivered from the heat, making one's mouth water.

He handed the bowl to Xiao Lejia and said, "Sister-in-law, come and have a taste."

Song Qiumin quickly said, "What's this for? Did you go back to stew chicken again?"

Lu Wuyai nodded and said, "Yes, Little Niu, don't just stand there. Sit down, drink the chicken soup, eat the chicken, and give the chicken bones to the Earls (dogs). There's also eel sashimi here. Try the old man's cooking."

Hou Banshuang stared at her mother with wide eyes, full of anticipation.

Song Qiumin said in bewilderment, "How embarrassing. Cough cough, look at that chicken, it's a chicken. Cough, you stewed this treasure."

Lu Wuyai laughed and said, "Sister-in-law, what you're saying is ridiculous. How expensive is a chicken? It seems you haven't grown up yet. In the worst-case scenario, I'll get you a chicken when it's grown up. Here, drink it while it's hot."

Song Qiumin understood what he meant, and rubbed her hands together, saying, "Alright, Yangzi, that sister-in-law won't stand on ceremony. If she keeps being so polite, it'll just be hypocritical. Ma Huali, thank you, Uncle. Let's eat."

Wang Ming obediently thanked her, took a sip of soup from the bowl, then his eyes lit up and he exclaimed, "It's really delicious, Mom! You drink it first, you'll taste it soon!"

Song Qiumin took a sip of chicken soup and couldn't stop. She drank a few mouthfuls sparingly, not gulping it down, but quickly finished the bowl of chicken soup, sip by sip.

Lu Wuyai pushed the plate over and said, "Chicken soup is greasy, you can't drink too much of it. Here, eat it with the sashimi."

The chicken soup has a rich aroma, and if you eat light sashimi at this time, you can better appreciate the flavor of the seafood.

The little count (dog) waited for the bone, but his mother chewed it and swallowed it. After waiting for a long time, she finally got a few crumbs of bone that she couldn't chew.

Just as Lu Wuyai was about to get up to take his leave, Xiao Lejia quickly said, "Wait, let me pour you a pot of water."

Su Xi immediately ran to the kitchen, but Lu Wuyai stopped her and said with a smile, "No need, no need to pour it out, the smell will disappear. Just stay in there, and we'll make some rice soup or chicken noodle soup tomorrow morning, then you can eat it."

"What's wrong with the pot?"

Lu Wuyai said, "It's simple. After you pour it out, have Xiao Niu take it to me. From now on, Xiao Niu will eat lunch and dinner with me. You don't need to cook, sister-in-law. Xiao Niu will just bring you a bowl after he finishes eating."

Xiao Lejia shook his head, like a rattle-drum: "This is not allowed..."

Lu Wuyai interrupted her, saying, "What's wrong? Eating alone is boring for me. As for the extra pair of chopsticks, it's alright, sister-in-law. Go to sleep early after you finish eating. I'm leaving now."

The little count (dog) lowered his head and sniffed hard, hoping to find some delicious chicken bones to eat before leaving.

In the end, no amount of effort was of any use. After Lu Wuyai left, it could only dejectedly chase after him.

It wasn't too late yet, and since he had arrived at the western end of the small village, he decided to go to his teacher's house. He hadn't visited his teacher since returning, and this was a good opportunity to learn about Qiu Min's situation.

His teacher was Li Zhijie, who was once a rural teacher.

Coconut Grove Village is quite large, with a population of over 1,000 people in more than 300 households. Years ago, there were many children. The government established a primary school in the village. Li Zhisheng was the principal of that school at the time.

However, due to the decrease in the number of children, after Lu Wuyai graduated from primary school, the village school was closed and merged into the town school.

Rural teachers like Li Zhisheng were not on the payroll, and the education bureau did not assign them jobs; they were dismissed and sent back to the fields.

Besides being a former village teacher, Li Zhisheng was also a barefoot doctor, running the village's only clinic. For headaches, minor ailments, and other minor illnesses, the indigenous residents would go to him. It was such a laborious process.

So he came to ask, and Li Zhisheng took advantage of the good weather these past few days to go up the mountain to collect herbs. He learned traditional Chinese medicine from his grandfather and father, and many of the herbs he used were adapted to local conditions and came from Dalong Mountain.

Thus, he had no choice but to go home first.

At noon, Hou Banshuang came to return the pressure cooker. Lu Wuyai said it was just right. He picked up the pot, put the marinated fish scales in, and put it on the stove to stew.

Wang Ming asked, "Uncle, would you like to make fish maw?"

Lu Wuyai closed the lid and said with a smile, "By the way, we're having fish jelly tonight. Bring a bowl for your mom; it's good for nourishing yin and relieving coughs."

Hou Banshuang smiled and said, "Okay."

Fish jelly is a unique cold dish made by fishermen. It is made by boiling fish scales in water and then freezing them. In the past, without refrigerators and freezers, it was mostly made in winter. Now it can be made all year round and is a popular dish in summer.

For lunch, we had pickled pepper and braised pork fried rice. He bought all the ingredients online a couple of days ago, pickled peppers and braised pork himself, and it was ready to eat today.
