Pushing open the door, the room looked fairly clean. Bai Shuang and the others checked it carefully and, finding no problems, put their bags down.
………………
Meanwhile, downstairs at Bai Shuang's apartment, two people were arguing.
"Go and take this pot of hot water and the stove to those people, and while you're at it, see what they're doing."
"I'm not going. They're going to use it as reserve food anyway, why bother?"
"Be good, listen to me. The village chief said those people don't seem like ordinary people. Let's keep them calm and observe them to avoid running into trouble, like last time when we lost several people and they got away."
………………
Bai Shuang took out water, and after everyone finished washing, they put the water into their space. Just as they were about to take out their food, they heard someone knocking on the door.
When I opened the door, a waiter brought over a pot of hot water, a stove, and some charcoal.
After the waiter left, Bai Shuang carefully checked the items that had just been delivered. The kettle of water was fine, the stove was fine, and the charcoal was fine.
It's because they're attached to appearances. Mandalas and the like are quite expensive, and these people can't afford them. If something happens, they'll definitely use simple and crude methods. But regardless of whether there's a problem or not, they don't want to use these things, so they'll just keep them for now.
Then I closed the door, took out the battery, electric heater, and food, and ate first.
After the meal, the group lay down fully clothed and closed their eyes to rest. About an hour later, they heard a commotion not far away, which seemed quite lively.
Someone was shouting something, someone was cheering, and at that moment, Bai Jiu and the other person woke up.
"Miss, what was that sound?"
"Miss, would you like to go take a look?"
"Very well, knowing yourself and your enemy is the key to victory."
The three were young and energetic, and not very sleepy. The snow leopard was even more excited and decided to set off immediately.
Bai Shuang packed up the battery and electric heater in the room, packed everything they needed to bring, checked it one last time, and prepared to leave.
The sound was coming from the two floors opposite. They had sneaked out, so they definitely couldn't have gone down to the living room, where someone was guarding.
Fortunately, this is only the second floor, not very high off the ground, and there are no security bars on the outside. I can just open the screen window and jump down.
However, the White Frost Space contains a wooden ladder, which can prevent noise from being made.
The three of them went down the wooden ladder. The snow leopard, finding it troublesome, jumped directly onto the snow with a thud. Fortunately, there was wind outside, so the sound wasn't too noticeable.
Bai Shuang put away the wooden ladder, and with the snow leopard leading the way, they headed towards the building opposite.
The building entrance wasn't locked, just closed, and people wrapped up like dumplings were going in and out. The sound we heard earlier came from the lobby.
Now the sound is even louder, as if the people inside are shouting something at the top of their lungs.
"Hit harder, hit faster, harder!"
"Quick, grab a stick!"
"Kill him with one punch!"
Snow leopards are obviously not allowed in; there are no dogs here, so Bai Shuang can only put it into her spatial storage.
Then they tried to find some old clothes to wear, but after searching for a long time, they couldn't find any. Finally, they found three oversized tops among their old summer clothes, and the three of them wrapped them around their heads. Then they found three ugly clothes and wrapped them around their heads as headscarves. Only then did they look somewhat like other people.
The three of them followed the others and slipped inside. The hall was quite large, and the noise made their heads buzz.
People gathered around the hall, shouting excitedly and making a ruckus, their expressions as excited as if they had been injected with chicken blood.
As you push through the crowded throng, the stench of blood fills the air.
In the center was a circular arena about five meters in diameter, where two raggedly dressed men were fighting each other, one holding a wooden stick and the other a machete, their expressions numb.
There were other people making bets nearby.
"I bet on the tall guy to win, half a pound of potatoes."
"I bet on the short guy to win, two ounces of cornmeal."
"The taller one wins, a pound of potatoes."
"The taller one wins, two pounds of sheep (human) bones."
...
Bai Shuang nudged a seemingly more down-to-earth onlooker, put her index finger to her lips to signal him to be quiet, and then slipped him a packet of instant noodles.
While the crowd was shouting, I quietly asked him what was going on.
The man glanced at Bai Shuang and said, "Are you staying here from out of town?"
Bai Shuang then stuffed a pack of cigars into his hand, which startled the old man, who quickly stuffed it into his clothes.
He glanced around and, seeing that no one was looking, quietly told Bai Shuang.
"The two people on the stage are like reserve food. Whenever it's time to kill them for meat, we pick two of them to fight here for everyone's amusement."
Those who win will survive for now, while those who lose will be chopped into pieces and cooked today. However, ordinary people like us won't get to eat that; it's usually the village chiefs and other high-ranking officials who eat it.
Bai Shuang suddenly felt a chill run down her spine. No wonder the people who brought them in today, although they were all wrapped up tightly, gave off a very uncomfortable feeling.
"Since you gave me these things, I advise you to escape while the defenses are weak at night. Otherwise, you won't be able to leave once it's light."
When they checked into the hotel, they even brought us hot water and a stove? Was it to keep them calm while they figured out a better plan?
Bai Shuang gave him another bag of chocolates and asked him about the surrounding terrain.
The village doesn't have many people, just over a hundred, but there are traps under the snow all around, one every five meters.
It sounded quite troublesome. Bai Shuang was out and about and didn't want to get involved in other people's business, so she asked the old man to lead the way and offered to let him name his terms.
But the old man refused no matter what he said. He said that the price of being a traitor would be a terrible death. He only told Bai Shuang that if she wanted to be safe, she had to go back out the way she came in. That way would be the right thing to do, but that way was guarded by the most people.
"Okay, thank you."
The two fighters were already covered in wounds, but neither was willing to give up. They continued to fight each other amidst the shouts of the villagers, just to hold on until the end and survive, or at least live a few more days.
Looking at the excited faces before her, Bai Shuang realized they were no longer human faces, but rather demons with blue faces and fangs.
They quietly called Bai Jiu and the other man out of the hall, briefly told them about the traps and defenses, and then the group grabbed their submachine guns and headed for the door in the dark.
If she could get out of here today, she wouldn't bother with anything else. There are plenty of these kinds of things to deal with in the post-apocalyptic wilderness.
If we can't get out, then we'll have no choice but to fight it head-on.
The three of them followed the path they had come from in the dark. When they were almost near the trap circle the old man had mentioned, Bai Shuang took out a long plank, and the three of them laid it out as they walked.
Although the old man said it was fine to go this way, it was still better to be careful.
Bai Chang walked at the front, Bai Shuang walked in the middle, and Bai Jiu brought up the rear.
As they were walking in the danger zone, a group of people came out from behind them. Just as the three of them were about to run forward, another group of people suddenly appeared in front of them.
They surrounded the three men, and they had homemade guns in their hands.
The people were puzzled. They clearly remembered that the three men had a big, fat dog with them. Where did it go?
It's like they've chosen the path to hell when there's one. Bai Shuang used the snow she had collected in her spatial dimension to cover those people's heads. When she collected the snow again, those people were already unconscious. Regardless of whether they were dead or not, she finished them off with bullets.
Sensing that no one was around, the three continued walking forward...
