The next day, the girl who had been pursuing Bai Jiu came looking for him again.
She came directly to Bai Shuang's house, and Bai Jiu told her to just kick her out.
It seemed he had no interest in the girl, but Bai Shuang still met with her.
She had heard about it several times before and was curious to know what kind of girl she was. Bai Jiu and the others didn't have parents, so Bai Shuang was their parent.
The girl entered without any restraint and seemed quite poised. She was wearing a blue tracksuit, which, although old, was very clean and without any holes.
She seems to be in pretty good shape, with above-average looks.
The girl's name is Zhang Xueer. Her father works in the commercial department of the base and is considered a mid-level official. Her mother works in a supermarket.
She said she had been betrothed as a child, the kind where the couple was arranged to marry before birth, but for some reason, the boy was later lost.
The two families were friends and had a very good relationship. After the child went missing, the girl's parents searched for a long time but couldn't find her.
Later, they moved away and never saw each other again before the disaster.
Bai Shuang thought the girl didn't seem to be lying.
"Then what makes you think Bai Jiu is that child?"
"Because he looks a lot like Uncle Lü. If you don't believe me, I'll show you a picture of Uncle Lü. I still have their family photo at home."
Bai Shuang: "Looking alike doesn't prove anything; there are many people in the world who look alike."
And the parents you mentioned aren't here right now, so a paternity test can't be done, right?
Isn't this just baseless speculation?
"And even if Bai Jiu is that child, if they were betrothed when they were young, they can refuse to acknowledge it when they grow up."
Actually, nothing else matters; the main issue is that Bai Jiu is unwilling right now.
Bai Shuang wanted to see Zhang Xue'er simply because she wanted to know about Bai Jiu's background.
A hint of disappointment flashed in her eyes.
"I know you're a good girl, but matters of the heart can't be forced."
This is a year of disasters. In the next catastrophe, it's uncertain who will live and who will die. The best thing to do is to focus on surviving.
Zhang Xueer also realized that if a person dies, they have nothing left, so what is there to talk about in terms of love?
"Mr. Bai Jiu, is your unwillingness to accept me also related to the natural disaster?"
"His current reluctance to date is indeed related to the natural disaster."
"I understand. I won't look for him anymore. I need to try my best to survive."
After saying that, he got up and walked out.
"Wait, could I see the photo you mentioned earlier?"
Zhang Xueer stopped in her tracks. "Sure, I'll bring it over in a bit."
Bai Shuang got up and gave her several packets of medicine to combat the toxic fog.
"Thank you for your help. Here are a few packets of medicine for you."
Zhang Xueer's eyes lit up. "Thank you!"
Amidst the poisonous fog, nothing is more precious than this medicine; it's incredibly difficult to buy.
After she left, Bai Shuang went to find Bai Jiu.
"That girl is really nice, why don't you consider her?"
Bai Jiu: "Miss, to be honest, in the past few years, many people have pursued me and my elder brother, including some with good conditions."
But I still stand by what I said: no dating until the disaster is over, and neither should my eldest brother, right?
Bai Chang, sitting next to him, nodded, "Yes, having someone to drag you down makes everything inconvenient."
Putting aside everything else, daytime is the best example.
Both of them were powerful individuals; if it weren't for Miss saving them, they would have died in Dragon City along with Uncle Li and the others.
"It's good that you've made your decision."
"There's one more thing, which is what that girl mentioned about your parents. I don't think she's lying. She'll send over some photos later. Would you like to take a look?"
Bai Jiu: "I won't look. So what if they look alike? So what if they don't?"
Whatever the reason for the breakup back then, it's pointless to dwell on it now.
Even if they were actually at the base, let alone photos, and were their biological parents, I wouldn't recognize them.
They never took care of me, and I won't take care of them either.
"Miss, if you're interested, you can take a look, but I won't. And nobody can bother me."
That brat! Oh well, if he doesn't want to watch it, he doesn't want to watch it. It's just adding to my troubles.
Not long after, Zhang Xueer sent over a photo, a picture of a family of three.
The child was an infant, and it was impossible to tell who he resembled. However, the child's father looked remarkably like Bai Jiu.
According to Zhang Xueer, the child's parents are both teachers.
Bai Shuang took a picture of the photo and returned it to Zhang Xueer.
"Thank you, thank you for your trouble,"
I also gave her a jar of apples as a token of my appreciation for her help.
The girl didn't refuse, said thank you and left. She never looked for Bai Jiu again after that, but that's another story.
Three days later, all the medicine had been sold at the base, everyone was recovering, and no one died at the base anymore.
However, the black pearl vines that had accumulated here in Bai Shuang were also destroyed, and some of them were so severe that even one dose of medicine was not enough.
Bai Shuang took the portion of the space she had later collected, intending to keep it for her own people, and then divided it in half to make medicine for seriously ill patients who were close to her.
As for others, there's nothing they can do but endure it.
The plants grown in the space will be ready for harvest in a month, she told Elder Lu, adding that she had planted some in the Frost Array.
But the official bases couldn't wait any longer; the death toll was rising day by day.
There were also border troops. During the polar day, Old Lu sent them chicks, fertilized eggs, and grain seeds. Later, he also sent some of the harvested grain.
Each subsequent disaster was taken care of, and the soldiers themselves were better able to save themselves than the survivors at the official bases, so they managed to get through it.
But this time, the outcome of the poisonous fog is uncertain.
