Chapter 64 A Ghost Knocks on the Door at Night

Bai Shuang and her two companions discovered that there were sentry posts around the agricultural science city, and they immediately became alert. Were they private bases? Or hideouts of criminals?

Over the three body armor vests, they changed into camouflage clothing for easy concealment. Pistols, submachine guns, and sniper rifles were loaded with bullets, and poison, sedatives, and hallucinogens were prepared.

Based on my experience from the last time I went to find Zhao Lin, I didn't dare to act rashly again. Moreover, last time my initial goal was just to kill Zhao Lin, but this time, the main purpose was to find the plants and animals that could still be used in the Agricultural Science City.

Bai Shuang decided to first find someone nearby to inquire about the situation inside.

Bai Shuang and her two companions rowed a rubber boat through the streets Bai Shuang had visited before the disaster. Some of the lower houses were still submerged in the water, while others had only their roofs showing.

Looking at the taller buildings, you can tell from the peeling mud on their exterior walls that the flood turned this place into an underwater city. Before the floodwaters receded, only a few buildings remained above the water.

Bai Shuang recalled that when she last came here, there was still a stall selling fish fritters, and couldn't help but sigh, "Natural disasters are truly merciless!"

Just then, a light rain began to fall. Bai Shuang and the others searched around but couldn't find anyone, which they found strange.

Logically, there are many restaurants here, and they should all have some food stored up. Even if the water is flooded, they can still be eaten after the wind stops. There are also several supermarkets, so it's unlikely that everyone will die.

There's only one explanation for why there's no one there: there are criminal gangs nearby, and those people have either been arrested or moved away voluntarily to stay away from the danger.

Rainy days get dark early, and night is already falling. Let's find a place to stay first.

Bai Shuang and her group chose the tallest office building nearby, put away the rubber boat, went straight up to the top floor, and selected a reasonably decent apartment.

Bai Jiu and Bai Chang started cleaning, while Bai Shuang took out a desk lamp and dimmed the light a little, just enough to see.

Three beds, a dining table, and three stools were set out. First, sit down, drink a bottle of mineral water infused with spiritual spring water, and eat a few grapes to quench your thirst and restore some strength.

Bai Jiu looked at the dilapidated walls outside, some doors had been pried off, and even the wooden floorboards had been pried open, and couldn't help but speak.

"Is this a haunted house?"

Bai Chang glared at him, "Can't you speak properly?"

Bai Shuang asked with interest, "Are you afraid of ghosts?"

Bai Jiu: "I'm not afraid."

Bai Shuang: "Why?"

Bai Jiu: "Because the three of us are upright and righteous, and because you, Miss, are a white-clad angel who has saved countless lives, would any ghost dare to harm us?"

Bai Chang: "That seems to make some sense."

Bai Shuang: "I hope so."

After resting for a while, the group continued to observe the agricultural science city through binoculars and discovered that there were lights inside.

This indicates that there is power generation equipment inside, and the fact that they use electricity so openly without fear of being robbed further suggests that there is armed force inside.

Bai Shuang planned that if she really couldn't find anyone outside, she would try to capture one of their people and interrogate him tomorrow.

Let's leave that for now. I'm tired after a long day at the boat. Let's eat first.

Bai Jiu: "Miss, do you have pizza? I haven't had it in ages."

Bai Chang: "You're so greedy, all you ever think about is food."

Bai Jiu: "People live simply to eat."

Bai Chang: "Those people have no food to eat, but they still want to live."

Bai Jiu: "They want to live so they can eat good food later."

Bai Jiu's thought process is so complicated that he can connect everything to food. Since he wanted to eat, Bai Shuang took out a pizza.

"Would you like drinks, milk, or porridge?"

Bai Jiu: "Anything is fine."

Bai Shuang still gave everyone a glass of milk, which is more nutritious. She also let the snow leopard out for some fresh air, giving it a mild pizza and a bowl of goat milk.

After the meal, Bai Shuang took out water, and the group washed up and went to sleep. Just in case, they put the snow leopard into their spatial storage.

The group had just lain down for a while when they heard a noise outside. Bai Shuang and the others immediately woke up, got up, and armed themselves.

Then there was a knock on the door. Bai Shuang gathered her belongings in the room, made sure nothing was missing, prepared her weapons, and opened the door.

"A ghost..." Bai Jiu cried out suddenly.

When Bai Chang shone his flashlight over, the person standing at the door did indeed look rather inhuman.

"I'm not a ghost."

The man was so thin he was unrecognizable, with sunken eyes, disheveled hair, and filthy locks of hair.

It was unclear whether the clothes he was wearing were men's or women's clothing; they hung loosely on his body. Only his mustache revealed that he was a man.

Are you soldiers?

Bai Jiu: "And who are you?"

The old man said, "Alright, regardless of whether you're soldiers or not, it's clear you're not bad people."

There are too few of you; you can't defeat them. Even if you go, those beasts will kill you. You should go back now.

Bai Shuang could tell from the old man's appearance that he was not a bad person.

Bai Shuang: "What exactly happened?"

I heard from the older folks that the Agricultural Science City has been taken over by criminal gangs and turned into their hideout. A couple of days ago, government officials sent to investigate the situation were murdered by them.

It was clear that the old man was very hungry.

Bai Shuang handed him a bottle of water and a pack of biscuits, told him to eat them, and then she told him to talk slowly.

When the rainstorm started, their dean organized everyone in the science and technology city to move all the seeds, computer data, animals, and some survival supplies to higher floors.

Unexpectedly, within a few days, the nearby guesthouses and restaurants were almost completely flooded. The government sent soldiers to brave the torrential rain and sail to pick up the main team for evacuation.
