Chapter 45 Will You Be My Dad?
Her thoughts drifted back to six years ago, the day she happened to be back in Beijing for an alumni reunion.
She encountered her longtime crush, a senior, who had been drugged and was leaning against a wall in a daze. When she saw someone approaching with ill intent, she impulsively rushed forward and took him away first.
Fearing he would be angry if he woke up, she cleaned up the traces overnight and quietly ran away.
Later, she discovered she was pregnant and wanted to give herself a chance to get closer to him.
But she didn't have his contact information, and after asking all her classmates, no one knew his new contact information.
Her belly was getting bigger and bigger, and she still couldn't contact him. In addition, her father was seriously ill and was urging her to get married.
To put her father's mind at ease, and also to prevent her daughter from becoming an illegitimate child.
She then considered paying someone to fake a marriage, but unexpectedly encountered a scumbag.
At first, he solemnly promised to raise his daughter as his own and not to take her money.
In the past few years, he really put on a convincing act, and I was deceived by his appearance and lost myself.
Just when she was thinking of forgetting the past and living a good life with him, he brought home his first love's child, wanting her to adopt her as his own daughter...
He wouldn't give up after she refused, and when she finally couldn't take it anymore and wanted a divorce, she was met with a beating.
Calling the police marked the beginning of her nightmare.
She thought she would never meet Gu Zheng again in her life, but unexpectedly, her daughter met him by chance.
It seems like they really like it.
"If you like it, that's fine."
Xia Zhiyun sniffed to hold back her tears and hugged her baby tightly. "As long as Yuanyuan is happy, Mommy is at ease."
At that moment, the ward door was pushed open, and Gu Zheng walked in.
Xia Zhiyun released Yuanyuan, quickly wiped the wetness from the corners of her eyes, and regained her calm expression, but she still dared not look him in the eye.
The caregiver came forward to change the blankets.
Gu Zheng's gaze swept over her reddened eyes, and his brows furrowed slightly.
"Does the wound hurt or is there any discomfort elsewhere? Should we call a doctor to take a look?"
Xia Zhiyun hurriedly turned her face away and picked up a tissue to wipe her eyes. "It's...it's nothing. Yuanyuan was too close just now, and her hair accidentally poked my eye."
Gu Zheng didn't say anything more.
Yuanyuan, oblivious to her mother's odd behavior, turned to look at Gu Zheng and asked, "Uncle, what's that in your hand?"
Gu Zheng reached out and touched Yuanyuan's head, but his gaze fell back on Xia Zhiyun. "This is your mother's medication list."
Yuanyuan took it and glanced at it, but she didn't recognize many of the characters.
"The nurse said you can eat more liquid food today, so I asked the caregiver to make chicken soup, which will be brought over in a bit."
Xia Zhiyun nodded, not daring to look at him, and lowered her head to straighten Yuanyuan's clothes: "You've gone to so much trouble."
"Of course."
Gu Zheng's voice sounded flat, yet it made her heart skip a beat.
Even after all these years, I still can't completely erase him from my heart.
But now, she...
Gu Zheng looked at her exposed wrist, where the bruises hadn't faded yet, and his eyes darkened. "That man has been placed under investigation. Don't worry, he will never be able to hurt you and your daughter again."
Mentioning the scumbag, Xia Zhiyun's body trembled uncontrollably. Yuanyuan sensed her mother's tension and turned to hug her, saying, "Mom, don't be afraid, Uncle Gu will protect us!"
Gu Zheng hummed in response, and was about to say something when his phone rang in his pocket. He glanced at the screen and said to the mother and daughter, "I'm going to take this call. You two talk first."
The door closed again, and Xia Zhiyun breathed a sigh of relief; a thin layer of sweat had already seeped from her back.
Although she knew that a relationship between them was impossible, she still didn't want him to see her in such a disheveled state.
She looked at Yuanyuan with a complex yet tender gaze, and sighed softly.
"Mom, I had a dream that Dad called me a bastard. What does bastard mean?"
Having lacked a father's love since childhood, she really wanted a father who would only love and care for her. When she found out that she was not her father's daughter, she was not afraid but relieved.
Xia Zhiyun's smile froze instantly, her heart felt like it was being squeezed by a cruel hand, the pain making it hard to breathe.
She gently patted Yuanyuan's back, her voice trembling, "Don't listen to his nonsense. Yuanyuan is my precious darling, my little princess whom I will protect with my life!"
Yuanyuan nestled obediently in her arms, gently patting her mother's back with her little hand. "Mommy, I'm not scared at all. On the contrary, I feel fortunate."
Luckily, I'm not his daughter. He never loved me and even hit you.
"I hate him."
"Mom, I want a dad who only loves you and me, like Uncle Gu, who will buy me delicious food and protect us, is that okay?"
Xia Zhiyun's arms, which were holding Yuanyuan, stiffened. She could no longer hold back her tears, which dripped down her cheeks and onto Yuanyuan's hair.
If she had known that her daughter would suffer so much because of her wrong choices, she would have preferred to raise her alone.
My heart aches like it's being cut by a knife. Silly child, the father you've been longing for is right beside you.
But she didn't dare to say it.
She nodded vigorously, her voice choked with emotion: "Yes...of course you can."
He lowered his head and kissed Yuanyuan's forehead repeatedly, saying, "It will happen. Yuanyuan will definitely have the best dad in the world."
Yuanyuan nodded emphatically, "Then when Mom gets better, shall we let Uncle Gu be our dad? He's so good to us!"
Xia Zhiyun's heart skipped a beat, and looking at her daughter's innocent smiling face, her eyes reddened even more.
"Don't talk nonsense, baby. You can't just acknowledge a father like that. You have to get the other person's consent first."
"Then I'll ask Uncle Gu when he gets back if he'd like to be my dad!"
Xia Zhiyun: "..."
...
When Gu Zheng returned, it was half an hour later.
He was carrying a packed lunchbox.
When Yuanyuan saw the delicious food, she completely forgot what she was going to ask.
"Uncle Gu, what delicious food did you bring back? It smells so good!"
Gu Zheng placed the lunchbox on the bedside table and gently ruffled Yuan Yuan's soft hair. "It's your favorite pork ribs and steamed egg with shrimp, plus corn soup. Eat it while it's hot."
As he spoke, he opened the lunchbox, and an enticing aroma instantly filled the ward.
Xia Zhiyun propped herself up and said softly, "I've troubled you again by spending so much money. You've really gone to so much trouble."
"It was just a small favor."
Gu Zheng set out the bowls and chopsticks, then wiped Yuan Yuan's hands with a wet wipe. "We should go back after we finish eating."
Yuanyuan couldn't wait any longer and scooped up a spoonful of shrimp and steamed egg and stuffed it into her mouth.
Gu Zheng looked at her little mouth, which was stuffed full, and a smile flashed in his eyes.
Yuanyuan was eating when she suddenly remembered what had just happened, and mumbled incoherently:
"Uncle Gu, I have a very important question to ask you!"
Gu Zheng was opening the soup box for her when he heard this, he paused, raised an eyebrow and looked at her: "Oh? What question is so important? Uncle must listen carefully."
Xia Zhiyun's heart skipped a beat, and she quickly interrupted softly, "Yuanyuan, don't talk while eating, you'll choke."
Yuanyuan obediently swallowed her food, leaned forward slightly, and looked up at him earnestly, asking:
"Uncle Gu, would you like to be my dad?"
