Chapter 50 The Furry Friends Guardian Team isn't afraid of getting sick, even with cats and dogs...
Following the navigation, Dr. Liu from the community clinic parked the car outside the gate of the Meow Meow Mimi Farm.
She got out of the car carrying her first-aid kit, looking at the quiet farm, feeling a little uneasy.
The phone call only said there was an emergency patient and the address was here, but no one was there to meet them at the door.
Just as she was about to take out her phone to dial the unknown number that had called her again, she heard a noise coming from inside the gate.
A glossy-coated, well-proportioned Chinese rural dog trotted to the door, followed by a light-footed, alert-eyed tabby cat.
The combination of the dog and the cat surprised Dr. Liu.
To her even greater surprise, the Chinese rural dog suddenly stood on its hind legs and skillfully fiddled with a simple switch located low on the inside of the door with its front paws.
With a soft "click," the door was pushed open!
After doing all this, Big Yellow squatted down, its tail gently sweeping the ground. It looked at her, then turned back to look in the direction of the farmer's house, and let out a short, gentle "woof".
The tabby cat walked to Dr. Liu's feet, but didn't rub against her. It just looked up at her and meowed once, then turned and walked gracefully toward the main house. After a few steps, it would look back at her, as if to say, "Come with me."
Dr. Liu has been practicing medicine for many years, and this is the first time he has encountered this kind of "reception".
She suppressed her surprise and a sense of absurdity, and tentatively followed Huanhuan inside, while Dahuang quietly followed beside her like a dutiful guard.
The farm was quiet and clean, and the air was filled with the pleasant scent of grass.
The automatic irrigation system is working, and the fine mist forms tiny rainbows in the sunlight.
Several call ducks were leisurely paddling in the pond. When they saw strangers, they just quacked once and were not alarmed.
Huanhuan led her straight to the villa, pushed open the half-closed door, and then nimbly jumped onto the back of the living room sofa, her amber eyes looking towards the bedroom.
Big Yellow stood guard at the bedroom door, making low growling sounds, as if to warn the person inside.
Filled with doubt and intense curiosity, Dr. Liu gently pushed open the bedroom door.
Under the warm light, she saw Shi Wan lying on the bed with an abnormal flush on her cheeks and a furrowed brow, as well as Tangyuan, the lion cat, who was nestled close to her pillow with a worried look on her face, and Mianmian, the ragdoll cat, guarding the foot of the bed.
The scene before him, so full of spirit and so touching, deeply moved Dr. Liu.
She quickly composed herself and stepped forward to try to wake the sleeping patient so she could treat her promptly. "Hello, I'm Dr. Liu from the community clinic."
Shi Wan's head was throbbing with pain. She managed to open her eyes when she heard the sound, her voice hoarse, "Doctor... thank you for coming..."
"Don't talk, let me examine you first." Dr. Liu professionally measured her temperature, listened to her heart, and examined her throat. "It's an acute upper respiratory tract infection with a fever, which is probably caused by a weakened immune system. It's not a serious problem, but you need to rest well."
She prescribed medicine for Shi Wan, explained how to take it, and gave her some precautions.
Throughout the entire process, the cats inside the house were unusually quiet. Even the most active cat, Bingbing, only peeked out from the doorway and didn't come in to cause trouble.
When she left, Da Huang and Huan Huan led the way for her, one in front and one behind, until they saw her to the gate.
Big Yellow even wagged its tail at her, as if to thank her.
Dr. Liu sat back in the car, unable to calm down for a long time.
Having practiced medicine for many years and witnessed too much of the coldness and warmth of human relationships, she was moved for the first time by the tacit understanding and spirituality among a group of small animals, and was also infected by the warm atmosphere flowing through this farm.
With a dazed and incredulous expression, she opened her phone and texted a friend, "You might not believe it, but the family members of the patients I saw today were a bunch of cats and dogs..."
Almost at the same moment Dr. Liu left, Shi Wan's phone screen, which was on the bedside table, lit up and sent a pre-set message to Wang Zhizhi.
"Wanwan is not too late: Zhizhi, I'm sick and have a fever. The farm has a system that manages it, but I need someone's help. Can you come?"
The message conveyed her current situation concisely and accurately.
Less than an hour later, the sound of screeching brakes came from outside the door, followed by Wang Zhizhi's anxious shouts, "Wanwan! Shi Xiaowan?! How are you?!"
Dahuang and Huanhuan seemed to recognize her scent and voice, and instead of stopping her, they went to greet her.
Wang Zhizhi rushed into the bedroom with Da Huang and saw her weak friend and the worried cats all over the room. Her eyes immediately welled up with tears.
"My God! What happened to you!" She rushed to the bedside, touched Shi Wan's burning forehead, and stamped her feet in distress. "I told you you were working too hard these past few days! Interviews and open days all the time, even a person made of iron couldn't take it!"
Shi Wan was awakened by her chattering and thought she was dreaming. When she opened her eyes, she saw her worried face and felt relieved. Her nose also felt a little sore, and she said in a hoarse voice, "Why are you here... Don't you go to work?"
"What work! I took the day off! How can I go to work when you're this sick?" Wang Zhizhi said irritably, but her movements were extremely gentle as she tucked the blanket around her. "Are you delirious from the fever? Didn't you text me saying you were sick? You scared me to death! Luckily you didn't go crazy and still texted me, otherwise you'd be all alone here..."
She looked around, seeing Mianmian and Tangyuan guarding Shi Wan, Bingbing peeking in from the doorway, and Dahuang and Huanhuan lying in the living room, both alert and reassured. She understood most of what was going on.
While she was away, these little creatures on the farm must have been protecting Shi Xiaowan in their own way.
For the next two days, Wang Zhizhi became the farm's temporary manager and Shi Wan's personal nurse.
She strictly followed the doctor's orders to administer medicine to Shi Wan, take her temperature, and prepared a variety of light yet nutritious meals for her.
She had a loud voice and moved quickly, yet she took meticulous care of Shi Wan.
"Get up, have some porridge before you go back to sleep!"
"Hey, did you take your medicine? Don't try to fool me!"
"Look at you, you feel much better after sweating a little, right? What did I tell you? You need someone to keep an eye on you!"
Shi Wan lay in bed, listening to her best friend's busy sounds in the kitchen, listening to her energetic nagging, and feeling the long-lost warmth of being forcibly taken care of. The fragility and loneliness in her heart caused by her illness were completely dispelled.
Looking out the window at the farm that was still running smoothly, and at the cats that occasionally wandered in to check on her, she felt incredibly lucky.
During these two days, Wang Zhizhi also established a revolutionary friendship with the farm animals.
She would complain to Bingbing, "How come you've gotten fat again?" while still giving him an extra small piece of boiled chicken breast when feeding him.
She would try to hug the aloof Mianmian, and when Mianmian gracefully dodged her, she wouldn't get angry, but instead praised her for having personality.
She noticed that Huanhuan always liked to squat on the stone bench in the yard in the evening, so she would go over and sit with her for a while, chatting about interesting things that happened at the company.
She even dared to touch Tangyuan's back when the farm manager was on inspection. Although Tangyuan always walked away with a reserved expression, the tip of his tail would curl up slightly.
Dahuang and Huanhuan became her little followers, going wherever she went, as if they had accepted her as the temporary administrator.
"Shi Xiaowan, your furry kids are so clever!" Wang Zhizhi exclaimed as she peeled an apple for Shi Wan. "Dahuang even chases away sparrows that try to steal my cat food! Huanhuan even knows where the medicine box is; when I can't find it, she paws at that drawer! They're more reliable than some people!"
Shi Wan listened with a smile, and her health improved day by day under the care of her best friend and the effects of the medication.
The fever subsided, the sore throat was gone, and I felt much better.
Two days later, Shi Wan felt completely alive again in the morning.
She insisted on getting up and making a hearty breakfast with Wang Zhizhi to celebrate her recovery and to thank her best friend for taking care of her.
"Alright, I see you're all better now. I have to go back to being my corporate slave." Wang Zhizhi said, clapping her hands after finishing breakfast. Although her tone was relaxed, there was still a hint of worry in her eyes.
"Zhizhi, we really owe you a lot this time." Shi Wan held her hand and thanked her sincerely.
"Come on! Don't be so polite with me!" Wang Zhizhi waved her hand dismissively. "Don't push yourself like that next time! Health is the foundation of everything, you hear me?"
Shi Wan nodded vigorously.
“You used to be a workaholic when you were working. I thought that now that you have your own career, you wouldn’t work so hard anymore,” Wang Zhizhi said with emotion. “I never expected that you would push yourself so hard that you would be more ruthless than anyone else…”
Shi Wan scratched her head, "I was careless. I'll be more careful about my health!"
"Hmph, you better be right," Wang Zhizhi didn't believe her nonsense. "I don't want to see you pitifully sick and begging for help again, you hear me?"
"Okay, I won't send it to you next time," Shi Wan said deliberately.
Wang Zhizhi immediately exploded, "If you don't send it to me, who will you send it to? Do you have someone else outside?"
"I'm telling you not to get sick again! Not that you shouldn't message me anymore!"
Shi Wan smiled and soothed her, "Okay, okay, I'll send it to you. Let's still be best friends, alright?"
Wang Zhizhi was finally satisfied. "You're smart to know what's good for you."
Before leaving, Shi Wan stuffed several large bags full of things into Wang Zhizhi's bag.
There was freshly picked cat grass, freshly baked honey pet cakes, crispy dried duck meat, farm-produced chicken and duck eggs, and a small jar of freeze-dried egg yolks for Wang Zhizhi's cat to try.
"Oh my, so much! Are you trying to make my three little pigs gain weight?" Wang Zhizhi said with a hint of disdain, but her face lit up with a smile, and she accepted it all without any hesitation.
After my best friend's car left, the farm returned to its usual tranquility, yet something seemed different.
The warm sunlight shone on her body, and Shi Wan took a deep breath of the air, which was filled with the fragrance of grass and earth, and felt full of energy.
She looked down at the cats that had gathered around her.
Tangyuan, Huanhuan, Mianmian, Bingbing, and Dahuang, who was squatting not far away watching her.
She crouched down, opened her arms, and tried to encircle them all in her embrace, pressing her cheek against their warm, soft fur.
"Thank you all for staying with me," she said softly, her voice still a little hoarse, but full of tenderness and strength.
She knew that life would go on once she recovered, and there were many more things to do on the farm.
But she doesn't feel tired at all. She has loving furry friends, a best friend with a sharp tongue but a kind heart, and a mysterious and powerful system that silently supports her from behind.
The new days are like this sun-drenched farm before me, warm and full of endless possibilities.
She stood up, brushed the bits of grass off her pants, and her eyes regained their firmness and brightness.
"Alright, guys, get ready!"
