"Is there anything to eat? I'm starving! Please find me something to eat!"
Zhao Damei was lying in bed resting with her eyes closed when Wan Suijin, who had been out and about all day, rushed in from outside.
He plopped down at the table, poured a bowl of already cold tea from the old teapot, and gulped it down.
The moment he put down the bowl, he saw that Zhao Damei hadn't moved, frowned, and shouted from outside, "I'm calling you, didn't you hear me!"
Zhao Damei rolled off the bed with some displeasure, slipped on her shoes, and while tidying her loose hair, took out half a steamed bun and a bowl of pickled vegetables from the kitchen with a sullen face.
"Thump!" It was slammed heavily onto the table.
Wan Suijin was instantly enraged upon seeing this.
"Is this all you're feeding me?"
Zhao Damei was also seething with anger, and retorted sarcastically, "I'm already lucky to have this to eat! All you do all day is wander around, and you can't even bring back a single penny! I've had the worst luck in eight lifetimes since I started dating you..."
Wan Suijin immediately deflated upon hearing this.
Over the years, whenever Zhao Damei is unhappy, she will bring up all sorts of old grievances.
Wan Suijin was so tired of hearing this that his ears were practically calloused.
"Alright, alright, I won't say any more to you..."
As he spoke, suppressing his anger, he turned around, picked up the half-eaten steamed bun from the bowl on the table, and began to eat it bite by bite with his cold tea.
As he ate, he felt somewhat aggrieved.
He recalled hearing outside that his older brother's fishing business was doing quite well, and that he had hired He Yong, a young man, to fish with him.
Seeing his family's life getting better and better, and looking at his own family, not only was he dirt poor, but every day was also very unlucky.
Thinking of this, he lost his appetite and threw the steamed bun into his bowl, saying irritably, "That He family brat is already helping my older brother catch fish, and look at our family, humph..."
Zhao Damei initially looked at Wan Suijin with disdain, but after hearing what Wan Suijin said, she was stunned, and her eyes showed more envy and jealousy.
"What did you say? How come I didn't know about this?!"
Wan Suijin scoffed, "Who do you think you are? Do you think people need to report to you about what they do?"
Zhao Damei rolled her eyes at his harsh words and turned away without saying anything more.
Zhao Damei left the house, seething with anger. She walked around for a while and, by sheer coincidence, saw He Yong heading towards the Wan family's house.
Zhao Damei perked up the moment she saw him. She raised her chin, narrowed her eyes, and spoke in a high-pitched voice: "Stop! Where are you going!"
When He Yong looked up and saw that it was Zhao Damei, his face instantly turned cold: "What's it to you!"
Zhao Damei wanted to mock him, "How can it not be my business?! Don't forget you're an employee of the Wan family! I'm practically your boss! You'd better watch your mouth when you talk to me!"
But He Yong retorted, "I am indeed a servant of the Wan family, but I was hired by Aunt Zhang Xiu and Wanwan. What does it have to do with you? You think too highly of yourself!"
"You!" Zhao Damei was speechless for a moment, unable to utter a single word in rebuttal.
This conversation between the two was overheard by Baili Wanwan, who happened to be there.
She walked up to He Yong, and although she didn't say anything, her pink and cute little face showed undisguised disgust.
Upon seeing Baili Wanwan arrive, Zhao Damei became even more confused about her own identity and began to speak ill of He Yong in various ways.
"Look at the people you've found! How dare they disrespect me! I think we should just fire them!"
He Yong clenched his fists tightly, his eyes already filled with anger.
Before he could even open his mouth to scold Zhao Damei, Baili Wanwan, who was standing to the side, had already retorted on his behalf: "Who we use or whether we use them at all is our family's business. Grandma, you're meddling too much!"
Zhao Damei was so angry she almost exploded.
She glared at Baili Wanwan, then looked at He Yong beside her.
There was no one else on the street at that moment; looking around, only the three of them were standing there.
Seeing that no one was around, Zhao Damei felt much more at ease and spoke even more recklessly.
At this moment, He Yong's anger had subsided a little, so he tugged at Baili Wanwan's sleeve and whispered to her not to lower herself to Zhao Damei's level.
As Zhao Damei watched the two whispering, a malicious smile crept across her lips, and she said in a sharp voice, "Oh—so that's why we let that kid from the He family work as a shop assistant in your Wan family! So you had ulterior motives!"
He Yong noticed Zhao Damei's eyes glancing back and forth between him and Wanwan, and he vaguely sensed that there was something more to her words.
He took a small step forward, shielding Baili Wanwan behind him, and stared at her with obvious displeasure, asking, "What do you mean by that!"
Zhao Damei crossed her arms, gave a nonchalant laugh, and said, "What do you mean! Don't be naive, He family boy. You'll end up being sold out and still counting the money for them!"
Behind her, Baili Wanwan blinked her bright eyes and tilted her head, trying hard to understand the meaning behind Zhao Damei's words.
Although He Yong, who was standing to the side, didn't quite understand either, his intuition told him that Zhao Damei was definitely not saying anything nice!
Knowing that the two teenagers wouldn't understand anything, Zhao Damei spoke even more bluntly to He Yong, saying, "I think they want you to be their son-in-law!"
"You're talking nonsense! Believe me or not, I'll beat you up!" He Yong's face turned red when he heard Zhao Damei's words, even though he knew that neither family meant it that way.
But thanks to his darker skin tone, it's not very noticeable.
"How am I talking nonsense?" Zhao Damei said dismissively. She looked Wanwan up and down and said, "Zhang Xiu has found such a treasure, she's bound to make the most of it. Don't even mention you, when she gets a little older, with that face of hers, what man can't she seduce? I advise you to open your eyes wide..."
Taking advantage of the fact that no one was around, Zhao Damei went further and further as she spoke, and her words became more and more outrageous.
They hurled all sorts of disgusting and offensive words at Baili Wanwan.
His emotions were mixed with some pent-up anger and grievances. He didn't dare to go to anyone else, so he could only vent his frustrations on these two children.
Zhao Damei was speaking enthusiastically when suddenly she felt a sharp pain in her stomach, followed by a force that pushed her hard.
Ouch!
Zhao Damei sat down on the ground in pain, and when she looked up, she saw He Yong, the culprit, glaring angrily at her.
"Don't talk nonsense!!"
"You brat! How dare you push me?!" Zhao Damei scrambled to her feet, clutching her back, staring at He Yong in disbelief.
"If you dare to talk nonsense again, I won't just hit you, I'll beat you up, you believe me!"
He Yong gritted his teeth in anger, his body slightly hunched, like a little beast that had been provoked.
How could Zhao Damei be afraid of He Yong's words? Looking at him like this, it seemed she had something to say about him.
