As soon as she entered the front yard of the Bai family, Yuan Qi could faintly hear the sound of a baby crying. The sound was a little hoarse and not very loud. She walked and checked along the way. There was nothing wrong with the feng shui layout of the Bai family, and there was nothing conspicuous or dirty.
However, there was a faint trace of malevolent energy present, though the traces were not obvious.
As Yuan Qi walked further in, he brushed past an old doctor carrying a medicine box.
The old doctor looked at Yuan Qi's dark blue Taoist robe and shook his head, probably looking down on a Taoist priest so young.
Yuan Qi didn't care about the old doctor.
"Take me directly to see your grandson." Yuan Qi felt there wasn't a big problem; the child was probably just frightened.
Madam Bai quickened her pace as she walked towards the front hall, and her crying became increasingly louder.
A chubby-cheeked baby boy was being held in the arms of a young woman who was gently coaxing him. The young woman was very anxious, with tears welling up in her eyes. When she saw her mother-in-law bring in a baby girl, she seemed to have a reproach in her eyes.
Yuan Qi could see clearly that in front of the boy was a tall, thin ghost scholar who kept making faces. His eyes were bulging out of their sockets, his eyes were dark circles, his tongue was sticking out a foot long, and his face was deathly pale. He probably hanged himself before he died.
The boy could see the ghost scholar, and he kept crying loudly. He was so scared that he clung tightly to his mother's neck and looked behind her.
The ghostly scholar felt a great sense of accomplishment in scaring the child. He went behind the young woman, deftly tied his tongue into a knot with both hands, and then swung it around to show the boy.
The boy cried even harder, his voice hoarse.
Yuan Qi stepped forward to examine the chubby-faced little boy, took his hand, and took his pulse. The boy was very strong and healthy, but he was just frightened.
The Ghost Scholar realized that Yuan Qi could see him and was looking him in the eye, so he gave up on the boy. Instead, he became very interested in Yuan Qi. He pressed his protruding eyes back in and asked with great interest, "Little Taoist priest, you've opened your third eye at such a young age. You can see me?"
"I can see you. Put away that gruesome look on your face. If you keep scaring children, I'll make sure your soul is scattered." Yuan Qi said calmly, while rolling his eyes slightly. A male ghost who died at a considerable age was actually acting so childishly, scaring children like this.
The Bai family members felt uneasy when they saw Yuan Qi talking to himself in the air. They all thought the same thing: this little Taoist priest must have seen something evil and was talking to it.
The young woman dared not underestimate Yuan Qi any longer, wiped away her tears, and stared at him with wide eyes.
Madam Bai felt a glimmer of hope, convinced she hadn't made a mistake in choosing the right person. She took her grandson from her daughter-in-law and showed him to Yuan Qi, saying, "Little Taoist priest, please take a look. What's wrong with my grandson?"
Yuan Qi was still staring at the ghostly scholar: "Hurry up, stop looking like that."
She took out a talisman from her bag and held it between her fingers.
The ghost scholar immediately started trembling, and the next second he transformed into a frail and elegant scholar. He chuckled and said, "Are you serious? I was just trying to scare him. I didn't do anything wrong. You can't use a talisman to scare me."
The child in Madam Bai's arms immediately stopped crying.
The Bai family members went from tears to laughter, and immediately began to look at Yuan Qi with new respect.
Especially the young master of the Bai family, who is also the boy's biological father, finally felt relieved.
"Let the child down." Yuan Qi wanted to pat the boy's head, but she was too short to reach it, so she could only smile and give him a cute smile.
The boy seemed to have caught Yuan Qi's quip, and he even chuckled along.
The Bai family found it all incredible. They had consulted countless doctors and shamans over the past two days, but none of them had worked. This little girl was so young, yet she possessed real abilities.
Madam Bai was so surprised she couldn't close her mouth, and gently placed the baby boy on the ground.
Yuan Qi gently touched the top of his head, muttering incantations: "Supreme Star, ever-changing. Expelling evil and binding demons, protecting life and body. Wisdom clear and pure, mind at peace. The three souls eternal, the spirit without loss or decline."
She took out a jade pendant about the size of a thumb from her cloth bag. It had Taoist runes on it, and she tied it with a red string through a small hole and put it around the boy's neck: "This is a jade talisman to ward off evil spirits. Don't take it off with you from now on."
She patted the boy's head and ruffled it: "Go play."
Madam Bai immediately told her daughter-in-law to take the child and leave, leaving only the Bai father, son, and Madam Bai in the house.
Madam Bai then asked, "Young Taoist priest, did my grandson see something unclean?"
Yuan Qi could clearly see that Madam Bai was very frightened and worried.
Master Bai was also very concerned about this issue: "I just saw you talking to the void, was that the filthy thing?"
Even Young Master Bai was extremely anxious: "Young Taoist priest, you must help us get rid of this evil spirit this time."
The Ghost Scholar snorted: "You heartless bastard, you want to get rid of me after you've used me?"
He went to Yuan Qi's side and complained: "Young Taoist priest, my name is Zhou Kuixing. I was the top scholar in the imperial examination a hundred years ago. I studied hard and finally passed the exam with the highest score, but I was murdered by my classmate. I was unwilling to die like this, so my soul resided in the wolf-hair brush I used in my life and became the brush spirit. This Bai Langping is mediocre and has no chance of passing the imperial examination. Half a year ago, he accidentally met me and with my help, he finally became enlightened. You wait, his servants have gone to check the results. Good news will come soon."
“I have never harmed anyone. I just happened to discover that this boy could see me, so I teased him. Little Taoist priest, this Bai Langping knows me. I often enter his dreams to guide him in reading and writing. He can’t just send me away like this. Open his Yin Eyes for him. I have something to say to him.”
Yuan Qi glanced at the Ghost Scholar but ignored him.
Her beautiful big eyes stared at Bai Langping: "Your name is Bai Langping?"
Bai Langping asked in surprise, "How does the young Taoist know my name?" He remembered that Yuan Qi had not announced his name after arriving.
Yuan Qi's eyes were cold and indifferent: "It was Zhou Kuixing who said it."
Bai Langping's heart skipped a beat, his legs went weak and he knelt on the ground, his hands and feet turning cold with fear: "You, you, how did you know about him?"
Yuan Qi sneered; Zhou Kuixing had indeed not lied.
She formed hand seals and chanted incantations, instantly opening the Yin Eyes of the three people. The handsome, frail scholar Zhou Kuixing appeared before the Bai family.
Bai Langping had only seen this person in his dreams and thought he was some kind of deity. In his dream, he kept calling him a deity and promised that if the person helped him pass the imperial examination, he would make offerings to him and burn three sticks of incense every day.
He never expected that the other party was actually a ghost.
He turned pale with fright and collapsed to the ground.
Both Mr. and Mrs. Bai were extremely surprised.
Amidst the shocked gazes of the Bai family, Zhou Kuixing found a place to sit down and even took a bite of the fruit on the table, which terrified the Bai family.
Master Bai asked, "Young Taoist priest, what's going on here?"
"You'll have to ask your son."
