late at night

Zhong Yunxi put her down after they entered the elevator and then helped her straighten her scarf again.

“I’m afraid you won’t see me and will forget me soon. What will I do then? Xiaoyi, you provoked me first. Abandoning a pet is a crime.”

The elevator quickly stopped on the third floor. Zhong Yunxi was standing on the side where the doors were open. Bai Yi reached out to push him aside, but couldn't budge him at all. In this kind of physical confrontation, whether he was unwilling or not, Bai Yi was almost powerless to do anything about it.

Zhong Yunxi grabbed her wrist, led her out of the elevator, and pulled her into the stairwell.

Bai Yi tried to shake him off several times but couldn't. Frustrated, she stomped on his foot.

Such a respectable man shouldn't tolerate anyone stepping on his shoes and getting them dirty.

Zhong Yunxi just sighed, then hugged her again, pulling her up a little higher until her feet were almost off the ground. Zhong Yunxi asked, "Do you want to put both feet up? Don't you like to put both feet up at home?"

The more he teases her like this, the angrier she gets. It makes it seem like she's being unreasonable.

"Zhong Yunxi, let's get a divorce. I can't wait two more years. Let's get a divorce right away."

"I disagree." He lowered his head and kissed her lips to stop her from speaking.

Bai Yi snorted. She was firmly controlled by Zhong Yunxi and was almost in tears.

Zhong Yunxi was panicked and at a loss. He could usually coax Bai Yi, but now he didn't know what to do.

He didn't want to make her cry anymore. After lingering for a moment, he let go of her, cupped her face, looked straight into her eyes, and asked, "Xiaoyi, have you ever loved me even a little bit, not even for a day, an hour, or a minute?"

It's impossible for it not to happen. All separations are due to a lack of love, not because there was never any love at all.

"It doesn't matter." Bai Yi wouldn't admit it; admitting she loved him would be like betraying herself.

Zhong Yunxi frowned deeply, his eyes seemed to be filled with wind and snow, and his voice became deep: "Important."

Bai Yi didn't want him to ask her that, so she grabbed his wrist, pulled him down, and pushed him back: "I don't love you, I don't love you, I don't love you..."

I don't know how many times I've said it, but as always, she gets annoyed and throws a tantrum. The more panicked she gets, the more irrationally she tries to cover it up.

After walking a few steps, she realized that her behavior was not convincing enough, so she turned back and stared at Zhong Yunxi: "I have never loved you at all."

Her scarf was rubbed raw, so she simply ripped it off and hurried back. Before she could lock it, Zhong Yunxi stopped her at the door.

Grandma was lying in a chair with her eyes closed, listening to the TV. When she heard the door open, she asked, "So you two know how to come back?"

Bai Yi was busy changing her shoes and didn't say anything. Grandpa glanced at Zhong Yunxi, who was standing awkwardly next to Bai Yi. He was an uninvited guest, and he had indeed been presumptuous today.

Grandpa simply said, "Since this is your first time here, you don't need to take off your shoes. Come in and sit down."

Bai Yi turned around and glanced at him: "Who gave you the right to come into my house? Have some manners and get out."

"Xiaoyi, you're not allowed to be so rude to anyone," her grandfather said.

On the island counter by the door were the snacks she and Yu Shiyuan had bought at the convenience store. She picked them up, intending to take them to her bedroom. She saw the roses in the brown paper bag, paused for a few seconds, and remembered that at the flower market, Yu Shiyuan had asked her if Nuanyu was pretty.

She hadn't planned to take it, but Zhong Yunxi was standing right next to her, so she grabbed the paper bag. She knew exactly how to infuriate Zhong Yunxi.

Zhong Yunxi also reached out and grabbed the paper bag. He didn't want Bai Yi to touch the roses given by another man, and the two confronted each other again.

"You want roses? I'll bring them to you tomorrow morning, Kayla."

"Let go, I want the warm jade now."

"Xiaoyi, you can get angry, but don't do it this way. You'll drag others down with you, and I don't want to take my anger out on anyone."

Was he threatening her?

Bai Yi pulled hard, and the two tore the paper bag apart, causing the roses to fall to the ground.

Why can he embrace her childhood sweetheart, while she can't even accept a bouquet of flowers?

Bai Yi bent down to pick up the rose, glanced at him indifferently, and took it into the bedroom.

Zhong Yunxi entered the living room, greeted the old man, and said, "I am really sorry to bother you so late today. I will go back now."

Grandpa raised his hand to beckon him: "Since you're here, a little longer won't hurt. Come and sit down."

Zhong Yunxi bowed slightly and sat down on the sofa. "Grandpa."

Grandpa looked at him and nodded: "You must be very busy in Hong Kong. You just went back one day and came back again, a round trip of more than 3,000 kilometers, a four or five-hour flight. Don't you even have any work to do?"

Zhong Yunxi lowered his head slightly, "It's alright, I'll make the arrangements."

Grandpa pointed to Bai Yi's bedroom: "One or two days, or one or two months? Does she look like she can return to Yuegang anytime soon?"

Zhong Yunxi fell silent. If there were any other way, he wouldn't want to go through all this trouble.

"Go back and calm down. Solve the problems that can be solved first, and then come back. If you keep dragging this out, you'll wear down any goodwill you have left."

Zhong Yunxi breathed a sigh of relief: "I can't rest easy when I go back. If I'm not by her side, she'll forget me very quickly."

Grandpa shook his head: "If you can forget it, it means you weren't meant to be. That's fate."

Zhong Yunxi doesn't believe in fate, nor does he accept it. He simply says, "Thank you for your advice, Grandpa. I will go back to do the business in Hong Kong, and I will also come to Xiangcheng. I'll just treat it as a four or five-hour commute. I still have that much energy."

Zhong Yunxi then asked, "Grandma said Xiaoyi broke things yesterday."

"Yeah, she was like that when she was little. She was too spoiled. When she was in a bad mood, she would throw things and act unreasonably. When she was three or four, she would only throw toys, so we didn't pay much attention or discipline her. But when she was five or six, she would throw bowls and cups. Glass and ceramic things are too dangerous, so the family started to take it seriously. Her grandmother forced her to change. This morning, when she saw her throw her phone, how could her grandmother not be angry? So she didn't let her eat. She was stubborn and wouldn't come out to apologize until noon. I asked Xiaoyuan to come and take her out."

Zhong Yunxi: ...

"Grandma, I think I sent her a message this morning that made her angry. Xiaoyi hasn't been eating well, so please don't let her go hungry."

Grandma got up from the recliner and turned off the TV. "I think she's angry with you too. I picked up her phone, and your chat was right there on the screen. You don't need to worry about how I teach her. You all play the good cop, so I have to play the bad cop."

“I apologize on her behalf this time. Grandma, please return the phone to her.”

"I put it in her room." Grandma got up, glanced at the two of them, and said to Grandpa, "You'd better let her know tomorrow, and make sure it doesn't happen again. Seeing her throw things makes my blood pressure rise."

Grandpa laughed and said, "I know, I know, I'll play the bad cop tomorrow."

Not long after, Zhong Yunxi got up to say goodbye. Downstairs, the streetlights looked even colder and more desolate in the winter night. The milk tea and desserts he had left on the ground before going upstairs were still there. He picked them up again and took them back to the hotel.

The next day, he returned to Yuegang at around 8 a.m. He went to the flower market early in the morning to see Bai Yi. He knew that since the two of them had met at the flower market the previous morning and caused so much trouble, it was almost impossible for her to come back.

Today, Grandma and Aunt Sun, the nanny, brought Bubble over and told him, "Xiao Yi refuses to come no matter what."

He nodded, holding a Kayla Rose in his hand: "I guessed so. I just came to take a look. I'll accompany you for a stroll and have breakfast."

He said to Aunt Sun, "Let me walk it. This little dog isn't very familiar with me. I'll play with it more."

Aunt Sun laughed and said, "How could I let you walk the dog?"

Bubble seemed to remember what happened yesterday morning, barking at him twice. Grandma laughed and said, "It's a purebred poodle, very smart, with an excellent memory."

Zhong Yunxi reluctantly squatted down and reached out his hand in a gesture of goodwill: "Bubble."

Bubble was dressed in grass-green clothes, which suited the temperament of a poodle. It was elegant, lively and clever. It stared fiercely at Zhong Yunxi, took a few steps back, and wouldn't let him touch it.

Zhong Yunxi smiled and said, "Not biting anymore? How about I hold your hand?"

Although Bubble was reluctant, she still let Zhong Yunxi lead her for a while.

After breakfast, Zhong Yunxi ordered a takeout. "Grandma, take one for Xiaoyi. It's rare for her to have something she likes to eat."

Aunt Sun said with a smile, "I was originally going to bring it for her too."

Zhong Yunxi thanked him, saying, "Thank you for your hard work."

The flower market wasn't far from the neighborhood. On the way back from their walk, Grandma chatted with Zhong Yunxi, saying, "It's the first time we've met, and you're quite frank, not hiding your family background at all."

Zhong Yunxi replied, "Of course. You are Xiaoyi's closest relative. I want to spend my life with her, and I won't hide anything from you."

Grandma nodded: "Xiaoyi isn't here today, so I'll say a few more words to you. You met Xiaoyi's father in Yuegang. Since you were able to resolve the marriage arranged by her father, you naturally don't take Bai Yeliang seriously, and he probably didn't object to you two. But once you get to Xiangcheng, I'm afraid your resources and methods won't be of any use to me and her grandfather."

"Grandma, please don't say that."

These words filled him with trepidation.

Grandma smiled slightly and said calmly, "You are intelligent and ambitious, you are purposeful and resilient, and you are born with power. It is not easy for a young person like you to meet someone who cares about you. How can you accept your fate without any resentment?"

Zhong Yunxi helped the old man walk, listening quietly.

"Although Xiaoyi wasn't born and raised in a particularly prominent family, as you've seen, she can't stand the slightest grievance. In your wealthy and powerful families, there are plenty of cases where fathers and sons are estranged, and husbands and wives are strangers."

Zhong Yunxi defended himself by saying, "I won't let her feel wronged."

Grandma nodded slightly and continued, "Normally, I don't spoil her like her grandfather and father do, and I'm not as strict with her. But when it comes to marriage, I still have to get involved. With her personality, she's delicate and sensitive. You see, she's willful and unreasonable, but she's only a bully at home. If anyone around you causes trouble, she won't be able to handle it. You think you can avoid making her feel wronged? Will you give up the business in Yuegang? Or will you abandon the family's reputation in the capital? I will not agree to this marriage. At my age, I think Xiaoyuan is more suitable than you."

Upon hearing this, Zhong Yunxi recalled that Bai Yi always refused to attend his dinner parties with him; she disliked his social circle. But he never forced her to do things she didn't like.

However, he made a mistake and let business matters inadvertently hurt her.

He told the old woman, "Grandma, I know your concerns, but I can handle them. She doesn't need to go to Beijing or Hong Kong; I can come to Xiangcheng. She doesn't need to adapt to me; I'll adapt to her. Investments and business can be done anywhere."

Grandma glanced at him sideways, then said nothing more.

Zhong Yunxi took the old man back, and soon after boarded a plane to fly back to Vietnam.

He first had Xue Meng apply for a daily flight route between Yuegang and Xiangcheng, and then had Xue Meng buy a house in Baiyi's neighborhood.

Xue Meng listened to his boss's arrangement and planned to go to work in Yuegang in the morning and fly to Xiangcheng to stay after work.

Over time, who can withstand that?

Zhong Yunxi only said, "This is the arrangement for the next few months. If things go smoothly in Hong Kong, I may not come every day."

Xue Meng understood that the boss would be spending more time in Xiangcheng in the future.

He arrives at the office around 10 a.m. and stays there until 7 p.m., eating lunch in the conference room next door.

After finishing his urgent work, he remembered Yu Shiyuan and called Lu Xin. He had been on edge for many days and suddenly wanted a drink, so he made an appointment with Lu Xin to go to a bar.
