late at night

late at night

Bai Yi lived with her maternal grandparents throughout high school. Her grandmother could see right through her spoiled and dramatic nature. From a young age, she could cry out a lot of grievances even with just a little bit of pampering.

Grandma shoved the flowers in her hand into her hand: "Then you go back by yourself. Take the flowers back with you. I won't bring you breakfast. I have something to ask him. Since you're not here, he doesn't have to hold back when he speaks."

Zhong Yunxi: ...

Bai Yi: ?

Indeed, only magic can defeat magic.

Bai Yi angrily scolded Zhong Yunxi: "Did you do this on purpose? Are you satisfied now?"

Zhong Yunxi silently took the things from her hands and put them in the trunk.

The three entered the breakfast shop. Zhong Yunxi scanned the order code on the table and asked them what they wanted to eat, while he placed the order.

Grandma said, "Xiaoyi and I both eat the original beef noodle soup."

Zhong Yunxi nodded and ordered three identical servings. He then got up and went to the free porridge station to get some millet porridge.

Bai Yi was playing on her phone at first. In the past, Zhong Yunxi would have taken her phone and fed her a few bites by hand, but now he had lost the right to do so.

However, one of her grandmothers said to her, "Wouldn't it be better if you just put your eyeballs into your phone?"

Zhong Yunxi sat to one side with her, while her grandmother sat opposite them. Bai Yi pouted, put away her phone, rested her chin on her hand, and turned her head to face Zhong Yunxi from the other direction.

"Xiaoyi, have some porridge," Zhong Yunxi said gently beside her.

She naturally didn't move; after the soup noodles were served, she only symbolically picked up her chopsticks and tasted a few strands.

She used to love eating these things, but now that Zhong Yunxi is around, she doesn't want to eat them at all.

Zhong Yunxi looked at her hands. Several days had passed since she returned from the hospital, and there were still needle marks and a little bruise on the back of her hands from the IV drip. He simply advised, "Xiaoyi, eat some more."

Grandma saw that she was still eating like this, and just said, "If you can't finish it, pack it up and take it home."

She then asked, "When did you get married? You didn't say anything, you kept it from everyone, and you got divorced after only two years. Whose idea was that?"

Bai Yi: ...

Zhong Yunxi looked at her: "We got our marriage certificate on Qixi Festival. It was my fault for keeping it a secret. I was too busy with work and was afraid that if we went public, I would have to deal with too many trivial social obligations. I wanted to choose a suitable time."

Grandma smiled knowingly: "There are countless people like you who lied for her from childhood to adulthood."

Zhong Yunxi: ...

"I know Xiaoyi is willful, but it's only been a few months since we got our marriage certificate, and things have turned out like this? You're quite something, aren't you? You cheated on me?"

Zhong Yunxi's face turned pale with fright. He put down his chopsticks and said, "No, Grandma, there has never been another woman. There never has been, and there never will be. I have never intended to divorce Xiaoyi."

Grandma just nodded, which can be taken as believing him for the time being.

Bai Yi got angry again when he said he had no intention of getting a divorce. She held back for a long time, not wanting to talk to him, but she couldn't help but say: "Zhong Yunxi, you have to go back on your promise of a two-year marriage contract. Are you going to deny it? Are all the other things you said also lies?"

Zhong Yunxi knew that if Bai Yi wanted to frame him or find fault, she could use any reason to attack and distort his image.

He simply replied, "Xiao Yi, after the mess you made with Chen Zhaoyang last time, why would I lie to you?"

Before leaving, Zhong Yunxi ordered another takeout for Bai Yi. She ate a few bites, and he packed the rest to take with him.

When I took them home, we ran into Aunt Sun, the nanny, after she finished walking her dog downstairs.

Grandma told her to take the flowers from Zhong Yunxi's hand, but considering Bai Yi's feelings, she didn't let Zhong Yunxi take them upstairs. "Don't bother, you can go back now."

Bai Yi glanced at the roses and said, "Aunt Sun, we didn't buy these, don't bring them home."

Zhong Yunxi knew that being able to meet him and have a meal was already the luckiest thing he'd ever experienced in Xiangcheng these past few days. He consciously took the flowers he'd bought and put them in the trunk.

Bai Yi held the dog leash, and the poodle wagged its tail, pawing at her trouser leg.

Zhong Yunxi reached out and touched the back of her hand, but Bai Yi shook him off. The poodle seemed to sense its owner's displeasure and barked twice at Zhong Yunxi.

Zhong Yunxi looked down and squatted down to pet it, but Bubble wouldn't let him pet it. It barked at him twice. Bai Yi pulled the leash back and said, "Bubble, don't touch that dirty thing."

She now despises Zhong Yunxi to death; who knows how many women he's been with? Bai Yi won't even let him hold her dog.

Zhong Yunxi seemed determined to pet the little poodle, reaching out his hand. Bai Yi quickly bent down to pick it up, glaring at him and saying, "What are you doing?"

"If it tries to stage an accident and bites me, you'll have to make sure I get vaccinated." Zhong Yunxi looked up at her, his eyes filled with helplessness and disappointment.

Bai Yi ignored him, picked up the dog and went upstairs. Zhong Yunxi followed her to the elevator and told her his itinerary: "Xiao Yi, I'm going back to Yuegang today, and then I'll go to Beijing. I'll come see you again this weekend."

Zhong Yunxi knew Bai Yi didn't want to listen, and he didn't care what Bai Yi was going back to do.

Everything he's doing now isn't necessarily helpful; it's more like he's trying to cover for himself. Since he doesn't know what he can do to forgive him, he can only start with what he can do.

Zhong Yunxi spoke a few more words to his grandmother, and after asking Aunt Sun to get the tea and wine he had brought in the car, he drove away.

After returning home, in front of Bai Yi, Grandma asked Grandpa, "Do you remember the Shi family in the capital?"

Grandpa put down his book, took off his glasses, and said, "I don't remember much. What's wrong?"

"Xiaoyi, marrying that grandson of the Shi family, with such a family background, no one would even look down on him." Grandma pointed to the tea and wine that Aunt Sun brought up and sighed, "The first time she came, she wasn't even allowed to enter the door. This marriage is not a good match, and Xiaoyi is picking and choosing, complaining about this and that. It's fine if they don't get married."

Bai Yi: ...

"It's a mismatch in social status; he's climbing the social ladder." Bai Yi thought Zhong Yunxi was a scumbag who was nothing special, so who cared about his family background?

Grandma laughed and said, "He's marrying above his station, we're the ones marrying above our station. The older generation has its own ideas, what do you know?"

Bai Yi angrily went back into the bedroom.

Grandpa and Grandma were talking in the living room about the Shi family and Zhong Yunxi and Bai Yi's marriage.

“I heard from Zhong Yunxi that he was probably angry about the wealthy girls who had business connections with him.”

Grandpa nodded. "Then he should change. Xiaoyi grew up in an ordinary family like ours with simple relationships. How could we tolerate this business partner and that family associate around him? If a man stays in that kind of environment for too long, and no one at home can control him, it's no wonder he'll get into trouble. You met him? What did you say?"

Grandma shook her head: "I can't see through him. He's undeniably handsome, but growing up in a family of that class, his deep-thinking nature is probably something he developed from a young age. But you can tell that his kindness towards Xiaoyi is genuine."

Zhong Yunxi returned to Yuegang in the afternoon and tried sending Bai Yi a WeChat message: "Xiao Yi, Si Jian's matter was my oversight. You can handle your project however you want; I'll have them cooperate. I have absolutely nothing to do with Wen Ying. No matter what you hear, don't overthink it, okay?"

Zhong Yunxi looked at the message box showing that the message had been sent successfully. He couldn't tell whether he was surprised or panicked. He was surprised that Bai Yi hadn't blocked him, but panicked because after receiving his message, Bai Yi would realize that she had been so angry these past few days that she had forgotten to block him.

Bai Yi was playing a game under the covers when she received the message. Zhong Yunxi's message popped up, and she lost again.

She angrily threw off the covers and threw her phone away.

Grandma was in the living room when she heard noises coming from her room. She went in and saw her kneeling on the bed with her phone lying against the wall.

"You're breaking things again?"

When Bai Yi was little, he would throw things around when he was unhappy, and his parents couldn't bear to discipline him. When he lived with his grandmother, he was disciplined many times and gradually changed. Now, it's obvious that he has relapsed into his old ways.

Grandma told her to pick it up herself.

She didn't pick it up.

Grandma picked up her phone: "You're wasting things like this, so you're not eating today. You can eat when you come and apologize."

In the past, breaking things would result in going hungry. For all these years, her grandmother has been using the same simple and brutal methods to discipline her.

Grandma glanced at her phone screen; it was Zhong Yunxi's chat window, and the game in the background hadn't closed yet.

The music was too loud, and the old woman wouldn't quit her game, so she simply turned off the computer. "Go back to Yuegang. Bai Yeliang has spoiled you rotten."

After landing in Vietnam in the afternoon, Zhong Yunxi opened the chat box on his way back to the company and couldn't help but send a message to Bai Yi: Xiao Yi, I've arrived in Vietnam. I'll bring you milk tea and desserts this afternoon.

He had been in Xiangcheng for the past few days and knew that the food in Xiangcheng was very different from that in Yuegang. At least, Songji Milk Tea and Liyuan Dessert, which Bai Yi liked in Yuegang, were not available in Xiangcheng.

Surprisingly, the message was successfully sent. Zhong Yunxi even felt something was wrong. He dialed Bai Yi's number, but was told that the phone was switched off.

Zhong Yunxi called his grandmother and asked, "Grandma, why is Xiaoyi's phone off? Is she home?"

Grandma said casually, "It's okay, I turned it off."

During breakfast, Zhong Yunxi could tell that his grandmother didn't spoil Bai Yi as much as she did other women. She wouldn't just coax her; sometimes she would even scold her. He asked, "What's wrong with Xiao Yi?"

Grandma countered, "Did she frequently break things in Vietnam and Hong Kong?"

It doesn't happen often, but once I dropped something, I broke millions of dollars worth of stuff.

Zhong Yunxi dared not speak, and only replied, "No."

"That's good. She smashed her phone this morning, and I told her to reflect on her actions."

Zhong Yunxi: ...

He didn't dare ask his grandmother how she made Bai Yi reflect on her actions, nor did he know if Bai Yi smashing her phone that morning was related to the message he had sent.

Her life in Xiangcheng was completely different from her life in Yuegang. There, she had teachers and senior classmates who doted on her, but her grandmother was strict with her. In Yuegang, whether she lived in Boyuntan or Qiwushanju, she was pampered at home, but she had to be careful at work.

"Can I go see her tonight?"

"Didn't you just return to Vietnam today?"

Zhong Yunxi: "Yeah, I originally applied for an evening flight to deliver some of her favorite foods, and I'll go there again while I'm at it."

The old woman rubbed her forehead. While she was making Bai Yi reflect on her bad habits by going hungry, a private plane came from over a thousand kilometers away to deliver food to her.

"Come back another day."

Zhong Yunxi: ...
