Chapter 42: Burning Desire

Chapter 42: Burning Desire

Ye Wansheng did go to the village today, not only that, he also went to the town.

But no matter where I went, I received no reply.

The package has been sent out for quite some time, but there is still no reply from Province H.

Not only him, but even his grandparents were very worried.

Although his parents said that it would eventually come to fruition, Ye Wansheng could still hear the worry in their words.

He couldn't sleep well the day after he received the letter.

Feeling vaguely uneasy, he planned to wait until the busy farming season was over and when he was not busy during the New Year, then ask the team leader for a favor and seek Lin Dan's help to see if he could go back to H Province.

These years have been all about correspondence. Ye Wansheng has gradually grown from a child who didn't know the world to a twenty-year-old young man, and he can never be sure about his sister's situation.

Ye Wansheng returned to the team with a worried heart, but as soon as he met someone, he heard them say rudely:

"Ye Wansheng, your father broke his leg while repairing the bridge. I heard that Lin Dan carried him to the village hospital. He even used the brigade's ox cart."

"I would ask the doctors from other brigades to take a look."

Ye Wansheng's face suddenly changed. Without caring about what he said next, he turned around and ran towards the village, but then he remembered something and ran towards his home first.

The abandoned cowshed was given to these people who were sent down to the countryside. As soon as Ye Wansheng returned, his mother grabbed his hand.

Mother Ye did not talk about Father Ye's affairs, but asked first:

"Did you get the letter?"

Her eyes were red and bloodshot, and her cheekbones looked prominent because she was too thin. After doing farm work for so many years, Ye's mother looked much older than her peers in the city.

Ye Wansheng's throat suddenly felt as if it was strangled by something, and he couldn't speak.

I didn’t dare say I didn’t get it, and I didn’t want to lie to my mother.

Ye's mother was very smart. When she saw him like this, she immediately punched him, causing pain in Ye Wansheng's chest.

He didn't know whether his heart or his body hurt more.

He looked much thinner than his peers in the village, and looked more like eighteen or nineteen years old than in his twenties.

There was not a bit of flesh on his body, and I could feel his ribs when I punched him.

Mother Ye burst into tears. Ye Wansheng patted her shoulder and said:

"Mom, don't cry. I'm going to the village to see Dad first. You and the uncles should take good care of grandpa and grandma and don't let them worry."

They are not the only family living here.

Among them, they made good friends with two families, but the other families did have some ideological problems, like reactionary ideas. They had been criticized and struggled for so many years, and every day they could hear those people cursing that the newly established country would perish soon.

So they didn't have much contact with the other families.

Before Ye Wansheng came back, the women from the two friendly families were comforting Ye's mother. After hearing what Ye Wansheng said, they hurried forward and waved to Ye Wansheng, signaling him to go to the village quickly:

"Go ahead. We'll help take care of your family. Try to find a way to cure your father's leg. If you don't have enough money, borrow it first, and we'll pay for it together when the time comes."

In fact, no matter how much they try to cushion the loss, they can't come up with much money.

Ye Wansheng knew.

He nodded, turned and ran out of the village.

Mother Ye wiped away her tears. The already difficult future seemed to have no sunshine at all.

In their family, only Ye Wansheng, his father and herself were able to work and earn work points.

My parents’ health was not very good to begin with and they were injured that year.

When he arrived in the village, he didn't have enough food to eat, warm clothes to wear, or a good place to live, and his health got worse and worse.

Even if he can do some farm work, he can't do much, and he is old, in his sixties or seventies.

If anything happens to them down there, they will only regret it for the rest of their lives.

But now Ye’s father’s leg is injured, and they probably won’t get many work points during the busy farming season this year. How will they survive in the future?

The houses here are rather shabby and the conditions are more difficult than those of other farmers in the village. After a few years, their health is not very good either. Therefore, even if they were on good terms, Ye's mother naturally did not want to drag them down.

Grandpa Ye came out of the house, his movements were a little slow, completely unlike the other old people in the village, he still looked strong.

He looked at Mother Ye and sighed, saying:

"It will be fine, it will pass, you have to trust the country."

Ye's mother had nothing to say. She was actually a little desperate. She didn't say whether she believed it or not, she just hoped that nothing would happen again.

It was only after she married her husband that she found out that he was not the biological son of her parents-in-law.

Instead, the child was left behind by a soldier named H who passed by that year. After raising Ye's father, the two men did not have any more children, for fear of mistreating the child of a soldier who served the country and the people and making our soldiers feel disheartened.

They never concealed this matter and told Ye's father about his biological father's deeds and the stories of the H Army soldiers since he was a child.

When Ye's father grew up, he didn't want to look for his biological parents, but chose to stay with his adoptive parents.

Even though he fell into such a situation, Grandpa Ye's faith never disappeared.

Ye's mother didn't understand, but Grandpa Ye said that when a new country is established, someone will have to shed blood for the country. If that person is him, he is willing to sacrifice himself for the country.

"I will follow you and your son to harvest this year. I will rest at home and cook."

The deep wrinkles at the corners of his eyes are the marks carved by time, and the scar at the corner of his eye is the witness of history.

Mother Ye thought for a moment and said:

"Dad, we'll see when the time comes. You guys are old now, and it's not impossible for me and I to do it."

Normally when eating, you let me and I let you. The adults try their best to let Ye Wansheng eat more, so they all look much thinner than Ye Wansheng.

When Ye Wansheng arrived at the township hospital, he saw Lin Dan and immediately went forward.

Lin Dan heard footsteps behind him, turned around and saw Ye Wansheng, and comforted him:

"It's going to be fine. Into the operating room."

In fact, the conditions in the village hospital are very poor. I hope I can get treatment here. Otherwise, going to the town or even the city is very troublesome and takes a lot of time.

It costs money to take a bus, and they didn't have much money, so they sent some of it out. Together with food and other expenses, the family was already so poor that most of the food they ate every day was just water.

Just look forward to calculating work points after the autumn harvest and distributing grain after the grain is delivered.

What else could Ye Wansheng do but force himself to nod.

The smile on his face was bitter. Ye Wansheng had been working in the countryside for many years, but he was not very tanned. Perhaps it was because of good genes. Ye's mother was also not very tanned.

Even though he was very thin, Ye Wansheng looked much more handsome than other young men in the village. He was elegant and had a bit of scholarly air.

Because his parents used to be teachers and went to the countryside, they taught Ye Wansheng a lot of knowledge as he grew up. There were no textbooks, but those things were all in their minds.

Ye Wansheng thanked Lin Dan:

"Thank you. You paid for the medical expenses, right? How much?"

Lin Dan was very calm. He thought for a moment and said, "I'm not short of money recently. You don't have to rush to pay me back."

Ye Wansheng didn't bother to be polite and just nodded.

At this time, the doctor came and called the two away. Ye's father seemed to have fainted from the pain.

Or maybe he fainted, Ye Wansheng didn’t know.

The doctor talked about Ye's father's condition and said he needed to be hospitalized to recuperate his leg, otherwise the leg might become useless.

But how much does hospitalization cost?

Ye Wansheng didn't know either. After he asked, the nurse told him:

"The surgery costs ten dollars, but there are also hospitalization fees and medical expenses, so the total cost is thirty dollars."

Seeing that Ye Wansheng looked strange, the nurse said:

"If you can't pay it back, you can borrow money from the brigade to cover it first."

Ye Wansheng shook his head. The brigade would not lend them money. The reason was very simple...no need to explain more.

Seeing him shaking his head, the nurse asked, "So you want to take the patient home and take care of him yourself?"

"That's fine, this way I only have to pay for the medicine and surgery."

Lin Dan interrupted the nurse and said, "Be hospitalized. I have money."

Ye Wansheng took a deep breath and did not stop Lin Dan from paying.

When Lin Dan came back after paying the money, Ye Wansheng bowed to him. Lin Dan sneered, his smile was a little cold. He raised his hand to straighten Ye Wansheng:

"What are you doing? I'm not even dead yet, and you're worshipping me and cursing me?"

Ye Wansheng was a little embarrassed and said, "You know that's not what I meant. Thank you, we will pay it back. What will happen to your family if you take out so much money?"

The Lin family is not a wealthy family in the village. On the contrary, they and Ye Wansheng's family share the same suffering.
