Chapter 44: Galloping in the Rainy Night
"Ye Mu!" Song Yanzhou was frightened by her tear-stained face and swollen forehead. He quickly went to pick her up from the ground.
Her whole body was burning hot, and Song Yanzhou knew she had a fever without even touching her forehead.
Without taking care of himself, Song Yanzhou took one of her coats, wrapped her up in it, then ran out the door holding the umbrella.
Song Yanzhou didn't even bother to close the door, and directly carried Ye Mu downstairs.
Ye Mu sat on his arm, half lying on his shoulder.
She didn't want to cry either, but after falling, her tears seemed to be unable to stop. From time to time, a drop or two would flow out from his neck. The hot tears burned through the skin on Song Yanzhou's neck and into his chest.
When he got downstairs, he opened the umbrella with one hand and comforted Ye Mu:
"We'll be at the health center soon. Don't cry. You'll feel better soon."
A flash of lightning streaked across the sky, and the first thunder in the pouring rain rumbled like an artillery bombardment, with a crackling sound, deafening,
Ye Mu raised his hands to cover his ears. Many people were awakened, and the guards on duty in the military area were even more frightened.
Song Yanzhou held her in his arms and ran towards the infirmary in the heavy rain.
The guard noticed that something seemed amiss. He didn't see clearly who the person was, but the figure was obviously a soldier, holding a woman in a skirt, who seemed to be his wife.
The soldier was actually wearing a vest, obviously he didn't have time to change his clothes.
Seeing him holding someone with one hand, the guards hurried out from the awning and ran over to help:
"Comrade, let me hold an umbrella for you."
Song Yanzhou glanced at him and said, "No need, just stand guard!"
"Captain Song!" The guard realized that the man was Song Yanzhou. He saluted him in the rain and asked worriedly, "Is your sister-in-law sick?"
"Yeah." Song Yanzhou didn't waste time talking to him. He just said hum and ran away with the person in his arms.
The guard was quite worried, but he still returned to his post as ordered by Song Yanzhou, planning to wait for the person who was to relieve the shift to come and then go to the health room to check.
Arriving at the entrance of the clinic, Song Yanzhou threw his umbrella aside, pushed open the half-closed door, and rushed in:
"doctor!!"
The person on duty was a familiar one. Song Yanzhou woke up the doctor who was dozing off. "Please help my wife. She has a high fever."
The military doctor in military uniform quickly stood up, took his man into the room and asked him to put the man on the bed.
Song Yanzhou stayed by Ye Mu's bed, watching the doctor check on Ye Mu and comforting him:
"Close your eyes if you feel uncomfortable, and sleep for a while if you can."
"She needs an IV." The doctor looked at her for a while and said to Song Yanzhou, "Why did you bring her here now? If we wait until her fever reaches 40 degrees, she'll go crazy."
Song Yanzhou felt a little guilty. He was not paying enough attention to Ye Mu. He should have gone to see Ye Mu before going to bed.
Or if I sleep a little less tonight and stay with her a little longer, I can find out earlier that she is sick.
After receiving intravenous drips and cold compresses, Ye Mu gradually fell asleep amid the pain and confusion in his brain.
Seeing that she fell asleep, Song Yanzhou moved much more gently, but his brows were still furrowed. He took the medical handkerchief from the clinic and wiped the sweat off her face.
Her whole face was flushed, her high fever had not subsided yet, and half of Song Yanzhou's vest and pants were wet.
The thunder rumbled intermittently for about an hour, and then gradually died down along with the sound of rain.
The guard who changed shifts came to the infirmary to check on Song Yanzhou's condition and said:
"Captain Song, how about I look after your sister-in-law for you while you go back and change your clothes?"
It’s not a question of elegance or not. Song Yanzhou’s clothes are all wet and haven’t dried yet.
Song Yanzhou didn't think there was anything wrong with being wet, but seeing that he was wearing a vest and had bare chest, he nodded, gave the guard a few words of instruction, and then ran out of the infirmary.
When he came back, Song Yanzhou was already wearing a neat military uniform. He saluted the guard, and the guard saluted back. The two of them acted like they were changing shifts, and without saying a word, one left and the other stayed.
Song Yanzhou moved a stool and sat down beside Ye Mu's bed, staring at the fluid Ye Mu was receiving. As the doctor had said, he would remind the doctor in advance when it was almost finished.
This lasted until the second half of the night, when Ye Mu's fever subsided. He heaved a sigh of relief and lay down on the edge of the bed to sleep for a while.
This morning Song Yanzhou went to work without having breakfast. Before going to work he went to find Zhao Nianxi, who was having breakfast with the political commissar and one of their children.
Seeing Song Yanzhou coming, Sun Jiandong immediately put on his military jacket and said to Song Yanzhou:
"What's wrong? You still remember to come to me?"
Song Yanzhou glanced at Sun Jiandong and shook his head: "Political Commissar, I'm here to look for my sister-in-law."
Zhao Nianxi stood up after hearing this, without putting down his bowl and chopsticks, he walked over to the door and asked:
"Is this about Ye Mu? Just tell me if you need any help from sister-in-law."
Sun Jiandong also nodded and said, "If you want your sister-in-law to help, just tell her directly. It's not easy for your wife to just arrive at the military region. She is different from ordinary people. It's okay to ask your sister-in-law to spend a little more time on it, as long as your family can be settled."
"When you go on missions in the future, you don't have to worry about the situation at home, so that your wife won't distract you."
Song Yanzhou nodded and thanked the two of them:
"Thank you, Political Commissar. Ye Mu had a fever last night and is still in the hospital. I would like to ask my sister-in-law to help take care of Ye Mu after dinner."
When Zhao Nianxi heard this, he wondered how come he got sick after only being here for a few days. This Ye Mu is really a pampered person.
I kind of dislike this kind of delicate lady, she is too weak.
However, Zhao Nianxi is the wife of the political commissar of the military region, so she is naturally willing to help with matters like this.
Even though she disliked him, she still had to show her ability and magnanimity as the wife of the military district political commissar.
Besides, taking care of someone is not a difficult task, so she must help.
She immediately nodded and agreed: "It's not a big deal, just go to work without worry. I'll go to the clinic to see her after dinner and make some soup for her."
Song Yanzhou nodded. Although he could sense Zhao Nianxi's momentary disgust when he mentioned Ye Mu, he also knew Zhao Nianxi.
Although Zhao Nianxi is sometimes a little petty in terms of ideology and ideas, he knows what he should and should not do when doing things.
A gentleman judges by deeds, not by heart.
"Here is the key, thank you sister-in-law." Song Yanzhou gave the key to Zhao Nianxi. The clinic certainly couldn't let Ye Mu stay there all the time, so he had to come back.
Zhao Nianxi took it with a smile: "Why are you being so polite to your sister-in-law?"
Sun Jiandong really thought that this was not a big deal at all. Besides, military wives should help each other, and he also told his wife so.
His wife was the political commissar's wife, so she had to set a good example. So he called Song Yanzhou, finished his meal in a few minutes, and went downstairs with Song Yanzhou.
"How is your wife doing? Can she communicate normally with other wives in the army?"
"It's not a good idea to lock your wife at home every day. Getting sick is a small matter. What if something happens to your wife at home one day? If she falls or bumps into something by accident, no one will know. Do you think it's dangerous?"
Song Yanzhou thought that the person he was talking about might be an old man with clumsy hands and feet, and Ye Mu generally would not be in this situation.
He was not worried, but he also felt that leaving Ye Mu alone at home with the door locked was a bit dangerous.
