The woman's body shook slightly, as if she was hit by these words.
Her eyes were red and her voice was choked with sobs, "Li Wu, I know Chang Feng shouldn't say those things, but she is also a miserable person. She was kicked out of the house and now she doesn't even have a place to stay. Just pity her..."
Shen Liwu frowned slightly, and his fingers unconsciously tightened the door frame.
"Changfeng's mother, are you forcing our Wuwu to forgive Changfeng? She is not yet old enough and she comes to destroy other people's families. How can you do that?" Zhou's mother said unhappily.
Zhou Yanjing walked out from the backyard, still holding a sickle in his hand and carrying a bundle of corn stalks on his shoulder. He looked at the woman at the door, paused, and a trace of impatience flashed across his brows.
Putting down the corn stalks, he strode across the street, stood in front of Shen Liwu, and said in a cold and hard tone, "Aunt Zhang, what are you doing in our house so early in the morning?"
Aunt Zhang was so shocked by his momentum that she took a step back. The smile on her face could no longer be maintained. She stammered, "I... I came here to apologize on behalf of Changfeng. What happened last night was actually..."
Zhou Yanjing interrupted her directly, "Aunt Zhang, I have already explained what happened last night very clearly. I will not pursue what Zhang Changfeng did, but please tell her not to show up at my doorstep again, and don't disturb my wife again."
"No, she won't come again."
As soon as Aunt Zhang finished speaking, the yard fell into a brief silence.
Zhou Yanjing's eyes were as sharp as an eagle's, staring at Aunt Zhang so hard that she dared not look up and could only rub the basket in her hands awkwardly.
Shen Liwu stood behind him, looking indifferent, but there was a hint of fatigue in his eyes.
"Aunt Zhang," Zhou Yanjing said in a deep but powerful voice, "Since you said so, please tell Zhang Changfeng that Wuwu and I don't need her to worry about our lives. She should choose her own path and bear the consequences herself. Don't think of finding a way out by interfering with other people's lives."
Aunt Zhang's lips trembled a few times, but she didn't say anything in the end. She lowered her head, hurriedly put the basket on the stone steps at the door, turned around and quickly left the yard. The vegetables in the basket swayed twice as she moved, and a few leaves gently fell to the ground, like a silent sigh.
Zhou Yanjing watched her back disappear on the village road, then turned around, raised his hand and gently grasped Shen Liwu's wrist. His palm was warm, but the force was light, as if he was testing her mood at the moment.
Shen Liwu raised her head and met his gaze. She could see the barely perceptible worry in his eyes, as if he was worried that she would waver again.
"Aren't you chopping corn stalks?"
"Now, sir." He put the sickle on the ground, took her hand and walked into the house.
"Don't come out if you have nothing to do. I'll take you to the river to catch fish when I get back."
He brought her into the house and sat her down, then he chatted with her for a while before leaving.
Zhou Yanjing didn't come at lunch time. His mother said that he might want to finish chopping all the vegetables before coming to eat, so she didn't wait for him.
It was already one o'clock when he came back. Shen Liwu was sitting in the yard chatting with Zhou's mother. When the door was pushed open, he saw Zhou Yanjing coming in with several bunches of wild grapes.
Zhou Yanjing stepped into the yard, sweat oozing from his forehead and sliding down his cheeks. His shirt was already soaked with sweat and stuck to his back.
In his hand he held two large bunches of wild grapes. The purple-black grapes shone attractively in the sunlight and gave off a faint sweet fragrance.
Shen Liwu's eyes lit up, and the corners of his mouth unconsciously raised as he watched Zhou Yanjing approach step by step.
"I picked some wild grapes for you. They're very fresh." He handed the grapes to her with a gentle look in his eyes, which was a bit flattering.
