The two walked along the path. The weeds on the roadside swayed in the wind, and occasionally a few bees buzzed by.
After turning a small hill, the view in front of us suddenly opens up and a golden cornfield appears before our eyes. The corn stalks stood tall, with broad, green leaves, and the ears of corn at the top glowing golden in the setting sun.
"This is our cornfield." Zhou Yanjing pointed to the green field in front of him, and said with a bit of pride, "The corn is growing particularly well this year and can be harvested."
"I want to eat."
Zhou Yanjing smiled and walked up to her. He stretched out his hand to help her break off a plump corn cob. His movements were skillful and gentle. "Pick a tender one and I'll grill it for you."
Shen Liwu took the corn cob and looked at it carefully. The outer skin was tightly wrapped.
Shen Liwu gently peeled off the corn husk with his fingers, revealing the neatly arranged, plump corn kernels inside.
She couldn't help but get close to smell it, and a satisfied smile appeared on the corner of her mouth, "It must be very fragrant when it's roasted!"
Zhou Yanjing looked at her greedy look and couldn't help but teasing her, "It seems that dinner tonight is not enough for you. Do you need another roasted corn?"
Shen Liwu raised her head and glared at him, then curled her lips in dissatisfaction, "No way! I just suddenly wanted to eat it. Besides, this is your corn, so it's not too much for me to have a taste, right?"
Zhou Yanjing was amused by her and stretched out his hand to pinch her cheek, "You are wrong, it's our baby."
"Break off a few more and let us eat together."
Zhou Yanjing nodded, bent down and began to pick suitable corn cobs in the cornfield. His fingers nimbly shuttled between the corn leaves, gently peeling away the layers of husk to check whether the corn kernels inside were full. Every time he broke off a corn, he could hear a slight "crunch" as if the earth was responding to his movements.
Shen Liwu stood aside, holding the corn she had just picked in her hand, her eyes following Zhou Yanjing's movements. The afterglow shone through the gaps between the corn leaves onto his shoulders and back, outlining a layer of faint golden edges. His figure looked particularly tall and straight in the fields, as if he had merged into one with the land.
"That's enough, that's enough. We can't take any more!" Shen Liwu couldn't help but remind him when he saw that there were more and more corns in his hands.
Zhou Yanjing then stopped what he was doing and turned around, holding five or six ears of corn in his arms, with a smile on his face, "This is enough to eat."
Shen Liwu wanted to take it, but Zhou Yanjing dodged slightly, “I’ll take it.”
The two walked side by side. The afterglow of the setting sun gradually faded and the sky began to darken. The outlines of the mountains in the distance became blurred, and a tranquil atmosphere permeated the fields.
Shen Liwu walked briskly, occasionally kicking stones on the roadside, making slight noises. She looked down at the corn in her arms, and the corners of her mouth rose unconsciously.
Zhou Yanjing followed behind her, slowing down her pace as she walked home. Zhou's mother had already lit a fire in front of the stove. The flames in the furnace were dancing, making the entire kitchen warm and bright.
Zhou Yanjing put the corn on the chopping board and skillfully peeled off the husk.
"Mom, we want to roast corn." Shen Liwu smiled and went to Zhou's mother, helping her add firewood into the furnace.
"Yeah, I want to have some snacks too." Mother Zhou nodded with a smile.
Zhou Yanjing put the corn by the fire and roasted it slowly. Shen Liwu squatted beside the stove, holding his chin with both hands, staring at the corn by the fire without blinking.
Sparks popped out from the firewood from time to time, making subtle crackling sounds. The aroma of corn gradually spread, mixed with the smoky smell of the wood, making her stomach rumble.
"Are you done?" she couldn't help but ask, with a hint of urgency in her voice.
