Zhou Yanjing groaned, but did not dodge. Instead, he hugged her tighter.
"I swear to God, I have never provoked them."
Zhou's mother's voice came from a distance: "Yanjing! Wuwu! Come home for dinner——"
Shen Liwu took the opportunity to break free from his embrace, bent down to pick up the wild chrysanthemum on the ground, and carefully brushed away the dust on the petals.
"Let's go, Mom is calling us to go back for dinner." The tips of her ears were still flushed, but her voice had returned to calm.
Zhou Yanjing looked at her pretending to be calm, a gentle smile in his eyes.
He reached out and straightened her crooked crown, "Tang, go home."
Shen Liwu walked ahead carrying a small amount of corn. When she was almost home, she stopped and put down the basket, saying in a grandmotherly voice, "Put yours down too."
Nonsense, doesn’t she have any dignity to carry so little home?
The old lady just now said that she was lazy. If she meets people when she returns to the village now, they will say that the Zhou family has married a lazy daughter-in-law who carries so little.
Zhou Yanjing was confused, "What's the point of putting it down?"
He said this but still put the backpack on the ground.
Shen Liwu picked up some of the corn from his backpack and put it in his own basket, stopping only when it was full.
Zhou Yanjing frowned, "It's very heavy, please carry less."
He wanted to pick it up, but Shen Liwu quickly held his hand and shook his head stubbornly, “I can do it, this little weight is nothing.”
As she spoke, she threw the backpack onto her shoulders with force. Her slender shoulders felt weighed down, but she gritted her teeth and straightened her back.
Zhou Yanjing looked at her taut jawline and suddenly understood something. His Adam's apple rolled twice, but he finally stopped trying to stop her. He just silently put the rest of the corn on his back and quietly reached out to support the bottom of her backpack.
The sunlight stretched their shadows very long, and their overlapping parts looked like melted honey. When passing by the stone mill at the entrance of the village, a few old men who were enjoying the cool air cast a glance at me. Beads of sweat appeared on Shen Liwu's forehead, but he took more steady steps.
"Oh, the Zhou family's daughter-in-law is very capable." The old lady in a blue cloth shirt smiled with her eyes narrowed.
Zhou Yanjing felt the backpack under his hand tremble suddenly. He turned his head and saw his wife's mouth curled up a little, her eyes filled with sunshine like broken gold.
He suddenly felt something explode in his chest, transforming into thousands of butterflies fluttering around his body.
When turning around the threshing ground, Shen Liwu suddenly stumbled. Zhou Yanjing immediately pinched her waist to straighten her up, and took the backpack over.
"Don't touch my backpack, carry it for me." Before she even got home, her parents were upset to see that she was not carrying anything.
Zhou Yanjing held the heavy backpack steadily with one hand and held her waist tightly with the other hand.
"Don't be so stubborn." He lowered his voice, and his hot breath sprayed on her ears, "You tossed and turned until midnight last night, and you got up so early..."
Shen Liwu's ears turned red, and her nails dug into the muscles of his arms.
"Shut up!" He stomped his feet anxiously when he saw a figure swaying under the eaves in the distance. "Put me down now!"
Zhou Yanjing let go with a sullen laugh, but took the opportunity to pinch the soft flesh on her waist.
