Chapter 14 Why hasn't Battalion Commander Lu returned yet?

Jiang Yue didn't hear what was said after that. When she got home, she quickly changed her shoes, tidied up the house a bit, and went to the kitchen.

In the kitchen, there were pots and pans, soy sauce, vinegar, rice, and flour, all of which were new and looked like they had just been bought by Lu Jingnian before the wedding.

Lin Jiao took out the chicken and casserole she had bought, cleaned them, blanched the chicken in hot water, and put it into the casserole with the medicinal herbs, then started to simmer it over low heat.

This needs to be simmered for an hour and a half to extract the medicinal properties.

After starting the medicinal stew, Jiang Yue began preparing the purchased vegetables.

The sisters-in-law gave us quite a lot of food. Jiang Yue took some to stir-fry, and the rest can be eaten tomorrow.

By the time Jiang Yue finished cooking, it was already dark outside. She glanced at the time and saw it was almost seven o'clock.

Lu Jingnian still hasn't returned.

She went to the balcony and looked down. Almost everyone had returned, and some had already finished eating and gone out again. Why hadn't Lu Jingnian returned yet?

Fearing the medicinal food would get cold and affect its efficacy, Jiang Yue changed her shoes and hurried downstairs to find Lu Jingnian.

Is this person so busy that they forget to eat?

...

On the military side.

Political Commissar Yu looked helplessly at Lu Jingnian as he returned. "Look at you! I told you to go to the canteen for dinner, but you wouldn't go. There's no food left in the canteen now. What are you going to eat tonight? Starve?"

"It's okay, I'll just cook something simple when I get home."

Lu Jingnian replied indifferently that he wasn't picky about food, as long as he could eat his fill.

Seeing his nonchalant attitude, Political Commissar Yu felt both helpless and distressed. He frowned and leaned closer to ask, "Is your wife really going back to her parents' home today and not coming back?"

Are you leaving him all alone?

What's the difference between this and not being married?

"She might be in trouble."

Lu Jing said softly.

They just got married, and Jiang Yue doesn't even have a job yet, so what could possibly happen?

"You two didn't have a fight, did you?" Political Commissar Yu asked, frowning. "Old Lu, we've been through thick and thin together. Tell me the truth, is your sister-in-law unhappy with you?"

Everyone knows that Jiang Yue likes Pei Hengzhi, so she probably married Lao Lu out of resentment.

But this morning Jiang Yue even had someone send wedding candy to Lao Lu, and he didn't seem dissatisfied at all.

"No, she said she would live a good life with me, and I believe her. She probably really had something to do today, which is why she went back."

After Lu Jingnian finished speaking, he picked up his coat and put it on, saying to the political commissar, "I'm going back first. You should go back early too."

He couldn’t stand the political commissar’s probing questions about Jiang Yue’s attitude toward him, because Lu Jingnian himself didn’t know what Jiang Yue’s attitude toward him was now.

Does she like him, or does she think he's someone she can settle for?

If we can make do, that's fine, but I'm afraid she still can't forget Pei Hengzhi and might do something irreparable.

The more Lu Jingnian thought about it, the more agitated he became.

This morning, she said she wanted to live a good life with him.

As Lu Jingnian left the office, he scratched his hair in frustration and walked out with his lips tightly pressed together.

Company Commander Liu, who had just returned from dinner at home, saw Lu Jingnian, walked over, and playfully punched him on the shoulder, teasing him with a wink, "Old Lu, you're a lucky guy."

Lu Jingnian frowned, "This is the blessing you bestowed upon me?"

What's wrong with this guy making faces at night?

Did you take the wrong medicine?

Company Commander Liu spat, "What good fortune can a grown man like me bring you? Of course, it's you who married a good wife. I heard it from your sister-in-law, and now I envy you."

Jiang Yue?

Didn't she go home?

Has he come back again?

"Let me tell you..."

Company Commander Liu was about to say something more when Lu Jingnian interrupted him, "Old Liu, I have something to do, I'll be going now, talk to you next time."

After saying that, Lu Jingnian walked out quickly.

Lu Jingnian came out of the army and had just arrived at the gatehouse when he saw Jiang Yue.

She was talking to a young soldier in the guardhouse, a smile on her face, the overhead light making her seem to be coated with a shimmering glow, very dazzling.

Lu Jingnian walked over quickly.

"Could you ask him for me why your Battalion Commander Lu hasn't gone home for dinner yet? Is he very busy?"

If he's busy, tell him you're waiting for him at home, and tell him to come back as soon as he's done.

Jiang Yue had just finished speaking when she heard someone call her name.

"Jiang Yue".

It was Lu Jingnian.

Jiang Yue turned her head and saw the man she was looking for standing not far from her, his cold and deep eyes looking at her intently.

"Lu Jingnian, are you done with your work?"

Jiang Yue ran over excitedly, "I've come to call you home."

Lu Jingnian's deep eyes swept over the hands that were wrapped around his arm, and he nodded slightly. "All done."

"Then let's go home."

After thanking the young soldier, Jiang Yue took Lu Jingnian's hand and walked back.

Lu Jingnian's hands were large enough to completely enclose hers. His palms were dry and warm, which Jiang Yue liked very much.

As they walked, Jiang Yue asked Lu Jingnian, "Lu Jingnian, are you very busy? Why are you out so late?"

"Today... has been a bit busy."

Lu Jingnian answered seriously. He didn't dare tell Jiang Yue that he thought she had gone home and felt it was boring to be home alone, which was why he came out so late.

If Political Commissar Yu hadn't kept pressing him, he probably wouldn't be home yet.

Have you eaten yet?

Jiang Yue asked, "The army has a canteen. If they go home late, they usually eat there."
