Chapter 2 The Poor Lin Family

Chapter 2 The Poor Lin Family

There was no one in the yard, and the Lin family members were now sitting in the main room eating breakfast.

While brushing her teeth, Lin Qingqing looked at the surroundings.

Just looking at these houses you can tell how poor the Lin family is.

The Lin family has two earthen houses and six thatched houses.

Although everyone was short of food and clothing in that era, not many people lived in thatched huts. Almost all of them lived in mud houses, and the better ones were brick houses.

There are two earthen houses, one for Lin's father and mother, and the other one belongs to the original owner.

The room that Lin's parents had lived in had been given to Song Yiyuan to recuperate, and they moved into the room of their youngest son, Lin Zhiqing.

The other six thatched huts belonged to the six older brothers, one for each brother.

The Lin family had six sons. In that era when people relied on their parents to distribute food, although sons were not full-time laborers, the cost of marrying off six sons was not a small sum.

Now only the youngest son is not married. He is one year older than Lin Qingqing.

It is rare for a man to not have a wife at the age of nineteen. In rural areas, both men and women generally get married at the age of fifteen or sixteen.

The original body only ate meat and fine grains, and wanted the best clothes and things. This was the biggest reason why the Lin family was poor.

There were twenty-five people in the Lin family. At that time, there was no family planning, so people had children at will.

The eldest son, Lin Baojun, has three children: Damao, Daya, and Sanmao; the second son, Lin Guosheng, has three children: Erya, Ermao, and Simao; the third son, Lin Daqing, has two children: Wumao and Liumao; the fourth son, Lin Guoqiang, has three children: Sanya, Qimao, and twin Bamao; the fifth son, Lin Zhijun, got married last year, and his sister-in-law is eight months pregnant.

Every time we have a meal, we have to set up two tables, one for adults and one for children, and the sisters-in-law take turns cooking the meals.

The original body did not do any housework.

After Lin Qingqing finished washing up and came to the main hall, he saw a sea of heads.

She glanced around and walked towards the seat next to Lin's mother.

The brothers all ate with their cheeks puffed out.

Li Zhaodi, the eldest sister-in-law, rolled her eyes at the sight of her younger sister-in-law. She had married early and had spent the most time with the original body. She hated this sister-in-law who had everything handed to her, while other daughters had to do all the housework and the good food went to her nephew. Her sister-in-law didn't need to work, didn't even farm, and yet she still wanted the best food and clothes. She was truly disgusted by this.

Third sister-in-law Zhang Guilian waved her chopsticks vigorously, picking up the only fried beans on the table.

Fourth sister-in-law Liu Daxiu was holding a black flour pancake in her left hand and black flour porridge in her right hand, eating them with relish.

Second sister-in-law Li Lanying and fifth sister-in-law Wang Chunhua were just eating in silence.

When Lin's mother saw Li Zhaodi's frown, she put the bowl down heavily.

"Old man, if you're full, go and pull the weeds out of your private plot. I see you're not even interested in eating. Who are you showing those big eyes to?"

When the other daughters-in-law saw their eldest sister-in-law being scolded, they ate even faster.

Li Zhaodi gave a wry smile: "Mom, I'm not full yet. I'll eat right away."

Sister-in-law Lin Qingqing is a straightforward person. She keeps fighting despite repeated failures.

She would always show her dissatisfaction with her original self on her face, and every time she would be scolded by Lin's mother.

Unlike the other sisters-in-law, who knew they couldn't do anything, they kept silent.

Lin's mother has a strong personality and has the final say in the family. In this era of patriarchal society, the reason why she was so spoiled was because of the protection of Lin's father and mother.

The original body's six brothers were taught by Lin's mother to only have eyes for their younger sisters since they were young.

Lin Qingqing came and sat down next to Lin's mother. In front of her was a big bowl of yellow millet porridge, an egg, and two corn steamed buns.

The food that my family ate, which was a mixture of black flour porridge and black flour pancakes with thin shells, was completely different from the other's.

"Nier, I just called you, but there was no sound. I thought you were asleep."

As Lin's mother spoke, she peeled the boiled egg and put it into the millet porridge.

Lin Qingqing glanced at her floral cotton shirt again. Her father, mother, brothers and sisters-in-law were all wearing patched clothes, and she felt sad.

"Mom, please prepare the same food for me as everyone else from now on. I have to cook too. If I marry Brother Song and go to the army without knowing how to do anything, won't I be laughed at by others?"

Lin Qingqing was telling the truth. It was because the Lin family spoiled her original body that she couldn't tell right from wrong and did things that completely destroyed her world view.

Moreover, given the Lin family's current conditions, if they still demand differentiated food, accommodation, and other necessities, wouldn't that be putting things in the way of those who are kind to them?

When these words were spoken, everyone at the table was stunned.

Father Lin said anxiously: "Ni'er, what's wrong with you? You are the only daughter in our family. If I don't treat you well, who else can I treat well?"

The eldest brother, Lin Baojun, also spoke up: "Yes, it's not that our family can't support you. We are old, and we still have our eldest nephew to support you."

However, Lin's mother was clear-headed. If her daughter went to the army, she would no longer have their care and would have to do everything by herself.

Thinking that her daughter might be getting married and becoming more sensible, she took Lin Qingqing's hand and said with a smile: "Ni'er has grown up. Ni'er is right. We can't follow her when she gets married and goes to the army. During this time, I will teach you how to do housework."

Several sisters-in-law all thought that their lazy sister-in-law had to turn over a new leaf for Officer Song.

Officer Song was really handsome and tall. His appearance must have fascinated the little girl.

The eldest brother, Lin Baojun, paused and said, "Da Ya is seven years old now. I asked her to go with you to the army to take care of you."

Lin Qingqing waved her hands: "No way, big brother, you're acting like what people call a capitalist daughter. You should be dragged out for criticism."

After listening to this, Father Lin nodded heavily and glared at the boss: "What a stupid idea."

The third sister-in-law rolled her eyes. It was her turn to cook tomorrow. This was perfect: "Then I'll let my sister-in-law cook tomorrow."

Mother Lin couldn't understand what she was thinking. She glared at her and said, "How can Ni'er cook for more than 20 people? You still want Ni'er to serve you? If you don't cook, just cook for Xiao Song. You will cook for him in the future, right?"

Lin Qingqing nodded, thinking it was a good opportunity to get rid of her original body's problem of not knowing anything.

The brothers also nodded, thinking that what their mother said was right.

Father Lin looked at Lin Qingqing lovingly, thinking that girls really change a lot when they grow up. His daughter is pretty and sensible. Xiao Song is lucky.

After this little episode, the Lin family members buried their heads in their meals again, as they had to hurry to the fields.
