As He Shaoyun came out of the family compound, she saw a young couple who looked like lovers. The boy was carrying food for the girl, and the way he looked at her was full of love and doting.
He Shaoyun and her sister watched them from behind. The girl's every move was gentle. While eating, she would look up at the man and offer him the food in her hand.
He Shaohua stopped the couple and said to her younger sister He Shaoyun with envy, "Look at them, how loving they are."
He Shaoyun gave a wry smile, her eyes filled with envy.
This loving scene reminded He Shaoyun of her childhood, when her parents were like this too.
"Sister, when we were little, Mom and Dad were just like them, loving each other deeply. But why was Mom driven to suicide by them? How desperate must Dad be?" He Shaoyun thought of her father now, and knew he must be feeling very desperate and lonely.
With his beloved no longer by his side, the father must miss his deceased mother.
“Xiaoyun, it’s all in the past. Mom did this to protect us. It will all pass now. We need to learn to grow up and protect ourselves. Those evil people will definitely receive the punishment they deserve.” He Shaoyun wasn’t very dependent on her parents. In their hearts, her younger sister was the best and most important. From beginning to end, she, the older sister, was the one who was neglected.
During their time in the countryside, their parents never truly cared about them.
But now that something has happened at home, He Shaohua can't just ignore it, as her younger sister has always been very dependent on her.
“Sister…” He Shaoyun looked at her sister who had suffered so much. Her sister, who was originally fair and beautiful, now had yellowish skin and was thin. It was obvious that this was caused by malnutrition.
Before she could speak, Chu Lin stepped out from behind a large tree and looked at He Shaoyun.
"Xiaoyun?"
Chu Lin called her name.
The two sisters looked over and were both stunned when they saw Chu Lin appear.
He Shaohua reacted first and said to He Shaoyun, "I'll wait for you up ahead."
He Shaohua gave them space to speak.
Chu Lin slowly walked over, his eyes fixed on He Shaoyun.
He Shaoyun's emotions seem complicated now. I don't know why she came. She just heard her cousin say that He Shaoyun was going to find a partner through blind dates here, and she started to get anxious. When she went home to visit her relatives, she thought of coming to find He Shaoyun to find out what was going on.
“I heard from my sister that you should find the right person here.” Chu Lin stared at He Shaoyun with his eyes fixed on her, something he had never done before.
“This is my own business, you don’t need to know.” He Shaoyun’s attitude was very cold.
Chu Lin took a step forward, and He Shaoyun took a step back.
"Are you alright?" Chu Lin asked, then added, "I learned about it from a friend. I knew something had happened to your family, so I went to the train station to see you off."
He Shaoyun looked down at the ground, staring at a pebble.
“You’ve seen what I look like now. If everything’s alright, you can go back now. Your conscience will be at peace. Thank you for caring about me and coming to see me off, even after what happened to my family.”
Since He Shaoyun was trying to force herself to let go, she shouldn't have talked to Chu Lin more.
Looking directly into Chu Lin's eyes, she said earnestly, "I just went on a blind date with a comrade from the army. He's a good person, and we'll submit our marriage application tomorrow. I will be happy, and I hope to receive your blessing. I also hope you won't be timid anymore. Since you like her, you should let her know, so you won't have any regrets."
Chu Lin watched as He Shaoyun calmly spoke these words.
"You said you wouldn't give up?" Chu Lin asked He Shaoyun.
This was a sentence He Shaoyun said to him when they went on a blind date.
"But now, are you the first to give up?"
"Are you here to mock me?" He Shaoyun asked Chu Lin coldly. "Do you hate me that much just because I forced you to go on a blind date with me?"
He Shaoyun should have expected this. Because of his father's status, Chu Lin dared not refuse to go on the blind date with her, fearing that He Shaoyun would retaliate and cause him to lose his chance to go to university.
“Now you don’t have to be afraid anymore. I won’t get in your way anymore. You should be even happier and stay far away from me. Otherwise, if you anger me, I’ll cling to you and you won’t be able to shake me off.” He Shaoyun became more and more agitated as she spoke to Chu Lin.
Chu Lin, however, did not react at all.
Chu Lin just stared at He Shaoyun like that.
He Shaoyun stared at Chu Lin with a cold smile.
"You're always like this, acting like it's none of your business, without any reaction. You're really cold-hearted, so cold-hearted that it scares me." He Shaoyun sneered at herself.
Taking a deep breath, He Shaoyun composed herself and prepared to leave.
“Xiao Yun?” Chu Lin reached out and grabbed He Shaoyun. He looked at He Shaoyun and said, “You are the best person to me besides my cousin. I can see how good you are to me, but you have to understand that liking me is not a good thing. My family is poor, I have elderly people to take care of, and my salary is very low. I can’t give you a happy home at all.”
He Shaoyun angrily shook off Chu Lin's hand.
"I've always kept my heart closed off because I think I'm a bad person. It's not that you're bad, I just wanted to come see you, to see how you're doing, I..." Chu Lin actually had a lot to say, but once he saw the person, he couldn't say anything.
I was very anxious and flustered.
He Shaoyun didn't hear what she wanted to hear. She gave a bitter smile, her lips trembling, and she moved her feet slightly to leave.
"Didn't you always want to meet my grandparents? You said before that you'd let me take you to meet them when you had a holiday. I'll pick you up tomorrow, okay?" Chu Lin looked up at He Shaoyun and mustered up his courage to say this to her.
He Shaoyun never expected him to make such a choice.
"You don't have to force yourself. I don't need your charity." He Shaoyun still didn't dare to look at Chu Lin, completely unable to believe that these words came from his mouth.
Chu Lin said, "If I hadn't come and hadn't said anything, I might have really lost you!"
He Shaoyun was even more surprised when she heard this. She was stunned for a moment before looking up at Chu Lin.
"At the train station, the moment I saw you leave, a voice inside me told me that if I didn't come looking for you, I might really lose you for the rest of my life. Ever since I met Lu He at the movie theater, we haven't seen each other alone. Every time I say I went to see her, it's because I can tell you that I want you to give up on liking me. Xiao Yun, with your background, you could find a better man and live a happy and carefree life. Being with me means you're destined to suffer. Even as you leave, you're going on blind dates with other people. I can't bear to see you with someone else."
Perhaps it was dependence, or perhaps Chu Lin had always been unwilling to admit his true feelings.
