"Let me see your new house. If you need anything, just tell us and we'll bring it over for you." The elderly Mrs. Zhao, who was in charge, quickly asked Liu Xinlan, "What a kind person she is. She's now a member of our family compound."
In the family compound, Liu Xinlan was always very popular. She often came to take the blood pressure of the elderly people and provide them with medical treatment and acupuncture.
Therefore, everyone likes Liu Xinlan very much.
Seeing her get married made me even happier.
"Sure, our wedding was rather sudden, so we'll just have a simple ceremony. We haven't prepared any wedding attire or anything like that." Liu Xinlan discussed it with Xu Qianli and decided to dress nicely, wear a big red flower on her chest, and have a meal with everyone to celebrate the wedding.
“It’s alright. As long as Instructor Xu treats you well, the ceremony isn’t important. But you can’t miss anything that’s necessary!” Grandma Zhao said earnestly, holding Liu Xinlan’s hand. “Let me tell you, marriage is for a woman for life. You can’t compromise yourself first.”
After listening, Liu Xinlan smiled and nodded, saying, "Aunt Zhao, don't worry, I haven't missed out on anything I needed. I bought the bicycle, the sewing machine, and the watch. It's just that the stereo is unavailable right now and needs to be pre-ordered. The shop owner said he would call us when it's in stock."
Liu Xinlan hadn't expected Xu Qianli to act so quickly.
The marriage application was approved in half a day. It wasn't until after we got the certificate that we found out that Xu Qianli was quite something; he actually went directly to the leader for a signature.
This terrified her.
Xu Qianli's actions are indeed too impractical.
Under normal circumstances, it would take at least a week.
The next morning, I asked her to go to the city to get our marriage certificate.
In that single day, Liu Xinlan became a married woman.
When everyone entered the new house, they found it completely empty, with newly moved-in cabinets. However, the bed and quilts were already laid out, the "double happiness" character was pasted up, and there were even paper-cut window decorations. Nothing from the wedding had been forgotten.
"Oh my, Instructor Xu is quick to get things done, but he doesn't miss a thing. Dr. Liu, you're going to be so lucky!" Zhang Juanjuan teased enviously from the side. "When I got married to my husband, we couldn't even afford the three rings and one switch, so we just bought a bicycle and a watch."
“You’re much better off than me. When I got married, all I had were a few quilts and nothing else!” Huang Yingzi didn’t say anything from behind, but when she heard Zhang Juanjuan say that the wedding ceremony wasn’t even in sync with the three rounds of music and the spinning wheel, Huang Yingzi got angry and couldn’t help but complain about her husband.
Upon hearing Huang Yingzi's voice, everyone laughed even louder.
It wasn't so much that people were laughing at Huang Yingzi for marrying into a poor family, but rather at the way she spoke—a tone of self-deprecation without any hint of inferiority, and a voice that was simply pleasing.
"What are you laughing at? I'm just stating the facts!" Huang Yingzi finished laughing and continued seriously, "Zhuang Dasheng was incredibly lucky; after marrying him, he even became a battalion commander!"
"What incredible luck! It's all thanks to your man."
"Maybe it's because Sister Huang brings good fortune to her husband. After marrying Battalion Commander Zhuang, her life improved and she rose through the ranks!"
"Ha ha!"
The more they talked, the happier they became.
The atmosphere was exactly the same as when Shen Qiaoyue got married last time.
Unlike others, Liu Xinlan did not wear a red wedding dress, but instead wore a plaid gray-white shirt, a pair of soft-soled black cloth shoes made in Shanghai, and a white-gray long skirt that reached her knees.
At this time, people mainly wore simple and appropriate clothing.
Everyone only managed to steal a moment from their busy schedules to glance at the new house before heading back to help out as it was almost time for dinner.
Only Old Mrs. Zhao stayed behind.
Grandma Zhao is an elderly resident of the family compound. Liu Xinlan usually takes good care of her. Her son went out with Deputy Regiment Commander Liu Mingchang and hasn't returned yet.
It was always Liu Xinlan who would come over every few days to say hello.
"Dr. Liu, come here, your aunt has something to tell you!" Old Mrs. Zhao pulled Liu Xinlan into the new house.
He took a bag out of his pocket and placed it in Liu Xinlan's hand, saying, "I'll give you this. You can put it on the quilt when you have your wedding night. Your aunt embroidered it for you. This symbolizes that you will have many children and much happiness."
When Liu Xinlan opened the bag, she saw that it was a handkerchief, pinkish-white in color.
“In my hometown, when a woman gets married, she will put a handkerchief like this on her bed. The next day, she will wash it and put it in the bedroom, which means that you two will have a long and happy marriage.” Grandma Zhao patted Liu Xinlan gently and smiled. “Maybe my thinking is traditional, but this is my blessing for you. You don’t have your parents by your side, so there are many things you don’t understand.”
Liu Xinlan understood what Old Mrs. Zhao wanted to say.
This immediately made Liu Xinlan blush.
Grandma Zhao was simply telling Liu Xinlan some tips on how to deal with things that might happen during the honeymoon phase.
After chatting for nearly half an hour, everyone had finished setting out the dishes and was waiting for the newlyweds to speak.
Xu Qianli rushed over to call Liu Xinlan.
"Xinlan, Aunt Zhao, come and eat with everyone." Xu Qianli called out, and Liu Xinlan recovered from her shyness.
He helped Aunt Zhao out.
"I'm here." Liu Xinlan straightened her clothes.
As she came out of the room and looked at Xu Qianli, Liu Xinlan remembered what Old Mrs. Zhao had said. Her whole body felt burning hot, and when she met Xu Qianli's eyes, she couldn't help but shyly lower her head.
"How are you? Your face is so red. It's not even that cold. Did you catch a cold?" Xu Qianli noticed that Liu Xinlan's face had changed color.
