After finishing breakfast, Shen Qiaoyue stood in the courtyard for a while. She had gotten up too early today and still had some time before leaving for work.
Lu Chen had already cooked and served the breakfast he made for Jiang Jinyao.
Shen Qiaoyue saw Li Qingming return from outside early in the morning.
"Sister-in-law, are you heading out to work?" Li Qingming greeted Shen Qiaoyue immediately upon seeing her.
Seeing the pork Li Qingming was carrying, Shen Qiaoyue nodded in response, "He's about to leave for work. How's Xiaoli doing lately?"
Looks like getting up early today means we'll get to eat pork.
For a family like Li Qingming's, which consists of three people, they usually share half a jin (250 grams) of pork.
The eight taels from Shen Qiaoyue's family, plus the eight taels from Liu Xinlan's family, make about one jin and three taels.
Pork is usually sold in fixed quantities and not in large quantities.
Living in Fucheng means there's plenty of seafood. Many people believe that eating too much seafood can cause gout. Plus, it's close to the sea and has a high humidity level, so people usually don't like eating seafood there.
Moreover, there was a nationwide shortage of supplies, and pork was not something that could be eaten every day. Once the meat arrived, it had to be bought in large quantities.
"Xiaoli has been experiencing severe morning sickness lately, but otherwise she's fine," Li Qingming honestly replied to Shen Qiaoyue.
“Morning nausea is very normal. It usually subsides in the early stages and will get better in a month or two. Now that Xiaoli is pregnant, you need to pay attention to her emotions,” Shen Qiaoyue said with concern.
Li Qingming nodded and said, "Okay, I'll be careful. Thank you, sister-in-law. I'll head back now."
Shen Qiaoyue nodded, watching Li Qingming's departing figure, and sighed, "It seems the family compound is getting more and more lively, which is great."
"Aren't you going to work yet?" Chu Wanfang led the children to get up, wash their faces, and brush their teeth. She looked at Shen Qiaoyue with displeasure and dislike.
Shen Qiaoyue sensed her mother's gaze, which was full of unhappiness.
"What, can't I skip work? Do you have to force me to go to work?" Shen Qiaoyue asked Chu Wanfang unhappily.
"Stop talking here, it's annoying to watch." Chu Wanfang heard her daughter and son-in-law arguing as soon as she returned home. The argument was so heated that it was almost to the point of divorce.
Faced with her mother's glare, Shen Qiaoyue could only slink away to work.
He pulled out his bicycle, his means of transportation to work.
Shen Qiaoyue looked at Lu Chen, her cheeks puffed out in anger.
Shen Qiaoyue was unhappy because her mother scolded her as soon as she came home.
"I'll take you to work." Lu Chen said, carrying a pot of porridge. "I'll take it to Yao Yao and then come back to take you."
"No need, your hand injury hasn't healed yet, don't do such heavy work." Shen Qiaoyue refused Lu Chen's request. "You can stay home and take care of the children, I'm going to work."
"Lu Chen, don't pay any attention to her. She has hands and feet and can go to work by herself. You should keep your hands to yourself and not hurt yourself." Chu Wanfang didn't want Lu Chen to take Shen Qiaoyue home, lest they start arguing again on the way.
Seeing this, Lu Chen had no choice but to compromise and said to Shen Qiaoyue, "Alright then, be careful on your way."
"Okay, you should go quickly," Shen Qiaoyue said, urging Lu Chen on.
Watching his retreating figure as he delivered food to Jiang Jinyao, she sighed softly. This reserved man was quite considerate towards his younger sister.
"Mommy, come back soon, baby will miss you." Xiao Nian, still sleepy, leaned against her grandmother's arms and greeted her mother.
Hearing the soft, sweet voice, Shen Qiaoyue smiled and nodded in response, "Okay, Mom will come home early tonight. Take good care of yourself at school, okay? Brother, take care of your sister, okay?"
"Mom, Big Baby knows." Da Nian ate the porridge that his father had prepared in advance, taking small bites.
Shen Qiaoyue parked her bicycle, came in to get her bag, and while she was at it, she saw Danian squatting down and pinching his cheek, and gave him a kiss.
"Big baby, Mommy has to go to work. Don't fight at school. Take care of your sister, okay?" Shen Qiaoyue instructed Da Nian.
"Yes, Mom, I understand." Da Nian nodded.
Shen Qiaoyue got up to get her bag, slung it over her shoulder, and headed to work.
Chu Wanfang put down the bowl of porridge she was feeding Xiaonian and said to Xiaonian, "Xiaonian, eat slowly first. Grandma will go check on Mom."
Xiao Nian stood in front of the dining table, spooning food into his mouth one spoonful at a time.
"Qiaoyue?" Chu Wanfang came out from inside, pulled Shen Qiaoyue aside and asked, "What were you arguing about yesterday?"
“We weren’t arguing about anything,” Shen Qiaoyue replied.
"Mom heard everything. Do you want Lu Chen to retire?" Chu Wanfang pressed.
Shen Qiaoyue frowned slightly; her mother was eavesdropping through the door.
"No, I just told him to be more careful next time he goes on a mission, I didn't mean for him to retire," Shen Qiaoyue replied honestly.
"Really?" Chu Wanfang clearly didn't quite believe what Shen Qiaoyue said.
"Oh dear!" Shen Qiaoyue said impatiently, "Mom, stop asking about these things. These are just minor conflicts between my husband and me, and they're over now. Don't worry about it."
Not wanting to talk to his mother any longer, he propped up the bicycle on the stand, pulled the bicycle, and walked out of the family compound.
"You silly child!" Chu Wanfang was at a loss. Seeing that Shen Qiaoyue was unwilling to talk about it, she couldn't ask her son-in-law either.
Watching her daughter walk away, Chu Wanfang worried that the conflict between the two of them would escalate and cause indelible harm to the child.
She complained, "They really are a handful. They start arguing as soon as I get back. Is it because I'm back that they're unhappy?"
Helpless, Chu Wanfang could only go back to take care of the children. As long as the commotion wasn't too big, Chu Wanfang didn't care.
However, if this escalates to the point of damaging relationships, it will be disastrous. There are children at home, and if things get out of hand, it will leave a lasting negative impact on them.
