Chapter 108 Going to the Countryside

Lu Fengnian's father-in-law Hua Guotao is about to celebrate his 70th birthday. Two days in advance, Lu Ting took Su Yan and his three younger brothers to Lihua Village in the western suburbs.

Hua Guotao had two sons and three daughters: the eldest son Hua Zhang, the eldest daughter Hua Min, the second daughter Hua Li, the youngest son Hua Heng, and the youngest daughter Hua Jing.

The eldest son Hua Zhang is a Chinese teacher at the town's middle school, the youngest son Hua Heng works in the logistics department of the army, the eldest daughter Hua Min marries Lu Fengnian, the second daughter Hua Li is also an official's wife, and only Hua Jing marries an old classmate from the next village.

Of all the siblings, Hua Jing lived the tightest life. Hua Li was not only a government official's wife, but also had a job as an accountant. With only two children to raise, she lived a very carefree life.

The school was on summer vacation, and Lu Ting's uncle Hua Zhang was also on vacation, so naturally he had to go to work and earn work points.

His wife, Tian Xiuhe, is an honest farmer who has been farming at home. Their eldest daughter and second daughter are both married, and their two sons, one works in a factory and the other is still in high school.

Lu Ting was walking on the ridge of the field, holding a large bag of canned fruit in his left hand and holding Su Yan's hand in his right hand. He called out to Hua Zhang, who was working hard, "Uncle, we're here."

"Hello, uncle!" Su Yan took the initiative to greet him.

Hua Zhang, who was cutting rice in the rice field, looked up and saw that his eldest sister's children had all come. He quickly put away his sickle and prepared to return it later.

"Lu Ting, why are you here? Lu Ting, is this your wife?"

Lu Ting smiled and nodded in agreement. Lu Yu, holding a bucket of oil in his left hand and a large bag of snacks in his right hand, shouted to Hua Zhang, "Uncle, isn't grandpa's birthday coming up in two days? We came back early."

"Hey, you're here too, are you here to tease our Xiangnan?"

Hoho, little cousin? Does he dare?

His father asked them to come back early so that they could experience the difficulties of busy farming season.

He himself also wanted to come early, of course, in order to catch birds in the mountains, fish in the river, and fish for frogs in the ponds and rice fields.

Hua Zhang quickly climbed out of the field and shook off the mud on his trouser legs. At this time, Lu Chen and Lu Jin came forward with something in their hands and greeted him, "Uncle."

Hua Zhang frowned when he saw Lu Ting and his brothers carrying so many things. "Why are you carrying so many things?"

Lu Ting explained, "It's Grandpa's 70th birthday, so we definitely need to prepare more food."

"Okay, you guys go back first. Your aunt should be preparing lunch. I'm going to register my work points and return the sickle."

"Okay, uncle, you go ahead and do your work first!"

Hua Zhang first went to the pond to wash the mud off his feet, registered his work points and returned the sickle, then hurried to his private plot to pick some eggplants, loofahs, beans and cucumbers, and packed them back in his clothes.

Tian Xiuhe didn't expect that Lu Ting and the others would come so early. There was no meat at home, and only rice was cooked for a few people at noon.

When Hua Guotao and Song Yingzi saw that all of Min'er's sons had come, they knew that there must not be enough food at home, so they opened the cabinet in their room and took out the three pounds of noodles and a dozen eggs that they had previously stored.

"Xiuhe, there's not enough food at home. Let's cook noodles for Ting'er and the others today. Come and get the eggs."

"Grandma, we brought some food."

Lu Jin carried a bag of 30 kilograms of rice, Lu Chen carried a bag of 20 kilograms of flour, and Lu Yu carried peanut oil and snacks.

Lu Ting carried canned goods and fruit, while Su Yan carried two slices of bacon and a few sausages. In those days, food was severely scarce, so bringing some food with you when you went out to visit someone would avoid gossip.

"Hey, why did you bring so much food?"

Lu Yu put down the things in his hands and nudged Song Yingzi in his arms, "Grandma, it's Grandpa's birthday the day after tomorrow. We plan to stay at your house for a few more days."

"Okay, okay, you guys can play for a few more days. If the room isn't big enough, you can use mats to sleep on the floor. Ting'er, what's your wife's name? She's pregnant, right?"

Su Yan took the initiative to introduce herself, "Grandma, my name is Su Yan."

"Ting'er's wife is really pretty. You can sleep on the bed when you are pregnant. A few naughty monkeys can sleep on the floor or door panel."

Lu Ting smiled awkwardly. He was already so old, but in his grandmother's eyes, why was he still a naughty boy who couldn't grow up?

Hua Zhang hurriedly brought back the picked vegetables and went out with a big vegetable basket from home.

Tian Xiuhe asked him, "Brother Zhang, what are you doing outside again?"

"Pick some watermelons for Ting'er and the others."

"Then go quickly, and pick some tomatoes from the vegetable garden."

Tian Xiuhe stuffed all the noodles and eggs that her parents-in-law brought out into the cupboard. Her husband had come back from picking vegetables, so there was no need to cook the noodles anymore. It would be quick to cook a pot of rice now.

She didn't want those who wanted to eat noodles to eat noodles and those who wanted to eat rice to eat, making it seem like the couple were being inhospitable. Since everyone was going to eat, they should just eat the same thing.

She had originally prepared two dishes and a soup: water spinach, stir-fried bitter melon, and pickled cabbage soup. Since there were only her parents-in-law at home, along with her husband and wife and their youngest son, Huanan, two dishes and a soup were more than enough.

Two dishes and one soup were enough for five people, but who knew that Lu Ting would come with a few brothers.

Tian Xiuhe took out the rice from the pot and quickly cooked another pot of rice. She also took out a few yellow mud salted duck eggs from the jar, washed them, and put them in the pot to cook.

She didn't touch the bacon and sausage that Su Yan brought for the time being. In the end, she made a dish of fried eggplant and a dish of roasted peppers. After Hua Zhang brought back the watermelon and tomatoes, she made another dish of scrambled eggs with tomatoes.

When it was time to eat, she kept putting scrambled eggs with tomatoes into Su Yan's bowl.

"Yan Yan, eat more so the baby can absorb nutrients."
