Chapter Nine

When the homeroom teacher entered the office, Luo Yao's mother was offering cigarettes to Zhang Zixu and the other teachers in the office, but they all refused.

Xu Qi's mother hadn't experienced anything like this before, and she stood at the door, somewhat at a loss.

"The parents are all here, please have a seat."

Zhang Zixu briefly explained the situation, then played the surveillance video, and outlined the general approach to handling it. Before he could finish, he was loudly interrupted by Luo Yao's parents.

"No, what do you mean? You mean my kid got beaten up and now he has to transfer to another class?"

"Luo Yao's mother, please calm down."

"Calm down? How can I calm down? Why should I calm down? My son was beaten at school, no one is giving me compensation, and they're even holding my family responsible. Why shouldn't those two little bastards be the ones to take responsibility?"

She remained seated upright, her demeanor still that of a noblewoman, but the words she spoke sounded like those of someone arguing in a market.

“It was indeed Luo Yao who started this, and he did indeed make some insulting remarks about his classmate,” Zhang Zixu said politely.

"But this fight, to put it bluntly, is mutual assault. All three children sitting here today will be punished, it's just a matter of which punishment is more severe."

"Today, the parents are sitting here. If we can reconcile, let's all try to understand each other. After all, there are only so many days left until the college entrance examination. It would be hard for anyone to bear the thought of being punished, right?"

"That teacher,"

From the moment she sat down, Xu Qi's mother kept rubbing the hem of her clothes. When she saw the teacher pause, she immediately asked, "Does that mean my Xu Qi won't be punished?"

"If we can reach a consensus, that will make things easier, but the necessary punishments will definitely be necessary."

"Apologize, we apologize." Mom tugged at Xu Qi. "Quickly apologize to them."

Xu Qi was still pouting and arguing with his mother, but his mother kept patting his head, and out of the corner of her eye she caught a glimpse of Luo Yao and his mother's arrogant faces, so he decided to listen to his mother.

"I'm sorry, Ning Yi'en. I... I was just momentarily out of my mind and that's why I... I'm sorry."

"And teachers."

"Teacher Zheng, Director Zhang, I'm sorry for causing you trouble. You can punish me however you want, but could you... not give me a disciplinary record?"

Now they're all meek and submissive, as if the person who just swore like that had been possessed. But before the director and Ning Yi'en could speak, Luo Yao's mother interrupted.

"Looking so poor, let me tell you, if my Luo Yao gets a serious warning, I won't rest until you're fired."

She pointed at Ning Yi'en menacingly, "What, you're being rude? Your father was the one who insulted you, how could you be so shameless as to hit someone? And now you're trying to shift the blame. Go find the principal, fine, I'll go to hell..."

"Calm down, parents, please calm down." Zheng saw that the situation was not right and quickly tried to stop him.

"Go find the principal, you think you know him?" Ning Sui had been a teacher for over forty years and was usually very composed, but she couldn't stand this woman's shameless behavior.

"Jiannan begged us to come, so we came. Who cares about this school..." But of course, this was just an angry remark. Even if Ning Yi'en really said he didn't want to study here anymore, the school might not let him go.

"Teacher Ning, Teacher Ning,"

Seeing that she looked ready to stand up and fight—and indeed somewhat intimidated by her statement that Ning Yi'en could change schools—Zhang Zixu quickly pulled her back, saying, "We really need to calm down."

"Don't bother with her." He whispered another sentence into her ear.

"It's like this, Luo Yao's mother. Even if this hadn't happened today, your child's transfer to another class would have been a done deal. I don't know how the previous head teacher assigned classes, but Luo Yao's grades definitely weren't good enough to stay in Class 3."

He showed her the side of the computer screen, saying, "This time he was last in the class, and ranked in the lower middle of the grade."

This farce continued until almost the end of the first class in the afternoon.

Zhang Zixu said that the incident did not have a serious impact, and considering that they were all senior high school students, no one was punished in the end.

However, each person received a 2,000-word self-criticism and a notice to be sent home for three days, and Luo Yao and Xu Qi were required to issue a public apology.

"I'm really causing the teachers a lot of trouble."

Xu Qi's mother was still expressing her gratitude and apologies until the very last second before she left the office.

Luo Yao's mother didn't say anything, and resumed her aristocratic demeanor, walking out with her head held high and her head held high, as if she wasn't the one who had just been yelling and making a scene.

"Ning Yi'en." Ning Yi'en was stopped before she even left the house. "Even though this repatriation notice has been issued, you still have to come to school tomorrow, you hear me?" Zhang Zixu said with a serious expression.

"If I really let you go back, don't even think about having a good time."

The slight smile that Ning Yi'en had on her lips faded.

"I thought...?"

"No way."

When the lunch break ended, all the grades were displayed on the classroom multimedia screen. In the meantime, while checking their own grades, the discussion about Brother Sanwu and his actual level, which had been quiet for a few days, was reignited.

Ning Yi'en entered the classroom a few minutes before the end of get out of class. He quietly left through the back door, but it still caused quite a commotion.

The desk was covered with textbooks and workbooks after the morning classes ended and hadn't been tidied up yet.

Lu Yunian slumped listlessly on the table, seemingly taking notes, but the notebook was a mess—

Some handwriting that was written and then scribbled out, meaningless and simple mathematical and physical formulas, and a few stick figures with hair added.

If Ning Yi'en were to look closely, she could see that the most exquisitely drawn little figure even had a tuft of hair and bangs drawn with a dark blue water-based pen.

If he still had the habit of patrolling the surroundings, he would have seen many students ahead who were eager to approach him and ask him questions, but were held back because class had not yet ended.

However, Ning Yi'en only glanced at it briefly, without looking around or greeting Lu Yunian. She cleared a space on the messy table, put the small bag that Ning Sui had just given her on it, and then began to clean the table and pack her schoolbag.

Lu Yunian almost missed his lunch break in the office today, and during the first class in the afternoon, he was drowsy but immersed in his own creation.

He didn't realize there was someone next to him until the bell rang for eye exercises and Ning Yi'en patted him twice.

He had thought of so many questions he wanted to ask Ning Yi'en, but when their eyes met, it was as if a silencing device was installed in his throat. He opened and closed his mouth again and again, but couldn't bring himself to ask them.

"Do you want some?" Ning Yi'en shoved the bag into Lu Yunian's arms. "It shouldn't be completely cold yet."

"Eat...? Me?" Lu Yunian suddenly felt that for some reason, his brain was not working properly lately, making him seem silly.

"Hmm." Ning Yi'en turned back to continue packing.

"I ate too much in the office and I'm still fuming. Try this for me, it should taste good."

"There's only one pair of chopsticks," Lu Yunian opened the box and looked inside. The eye exercises were still playing a soothing tune, "One, two, three, four..." His movements were very small. "I'll still count..."

"If you don't mind, then eat it. I don't mind."

"Okay, then I'll eat it."

"uh-huh."

The eye exercises continued, but Ning Yi'en and Lu Yunian had done this kind of "bad thing" many times before. Or, secretly eating was just an unspoken little pleasure among the students when they were bored with studying.

However, Lu Yunian still reservedly placed the bowl on his lap, then bent down and quietly ate.

This meal was probably the second most emotionally intense one for Lu Yunian during his high school years. The most emotionally intense and complicated one was the time he fell down, almost missed his class, and then ate a sandwich while hiding it behind a book during morning self-study.

Without exaggeration, that was the best and most memorable breakfast bread Lu Yunian had ever eaten.

He made me eat the delicious food his grandma brought him.

Ning Yi'en's maternal grandmother is actually Teacher Ning, well... okay, I think their handwriting is equally beautiful.

He offered me food and said he didn't mind using the same pair of chopsticks. Does that mean he considers me a good friend too?

If it's the same pair of chopsticks, then when he eats later...

Wait... why would I think of that?!

But he couldn't continue his investigation. The consequence of eating while daydreaming and having to be wary of the students and teachers on duty was that he ended up with a heavy blow to his tongue.

"Ouch..." Lu Yunian covered his face, "I bit my tongue, it hurts so much."

"Be careful, take your time, no rush."

Ning Yi'en handed him a piece of paper. Perhaps because he hadn't taken a nap, his voice was a little hoarse and languid.

"Ning Yi'en," the broadcast's voice still echoed in the classroom. Yan Ting turned around impatiently, followed by no fewer than ten pairs of eyes turning to Ning Yi'en. "Um, may I ask?"

"Of course, but I will choose which answers to give."

"So, what are the results of the college entrance examination and the entrance examination..."

"I missed the English exam for some reason." He said casually, as if the English exam was just an insignificant monthly test.

"Well..." The casual tone seemed to strike everyone around as if they'd been struck on the head, silencing those who were itching to ask questions.

— With a total score of over 550 in five subjects, even if the English score is only 100, it would be enough to get into a very good university.

"It's okay, it's all in the past, and nothing can be changed."

"Why didn't you say so before? You've suffered so much for nothing." Someone said indignantly.

"Nobody asked, and there's nothing to explain."

The air seemed to freeze for a few seconds. This corner was completely out of place in the noisy classroom. Lu Yunian picked up his chopsticks but put them down after a short while, trying to change the subject.

"Has the fight been resolved?"

"Okay, write a self-criticism and then transfer to another class." Ning Yi'en stood up, straightened her clothes, and continued to pack her books.

Okay, it seems like it would have been better not to move at all.

"Transfer to another class?" What an awkward atmosphere. "But with your grades, you'd definitely be better off in Class 1 or 2. Our class is so noisy; sometimes it's torture to be in there."

Yan Ting waved his hand, "You deserve the best, Master."

“It wasn’t me who turned it,” Ning Yi’en said with a smile. “I originally wanted to tease you guys and ease the tension, but it seems… my approach wasn’t quite right.”

"You've really got a knack for getting the atmosphere going, bro."

Finally, Lu Yunian and Yan Ting both smiled with relief.

"However, a self-criticism still needs to be written, let's say 2000."

Ning Yi'en sat down and took the bowl and chopsticks handed to her from the side. "Also, we'll be changing seats during the next self-study period, so you can pack your things in advance."
