Chapter 16-16- Beaten by a Chicken
Two years later.
One midsummer morning, Rosalin walked through a kilometer-long corridor covered with wisteria flowers and came to a hidden corner formed by the collapse of an overpass. She pulled aside the bushes to reveal a pile of thatch.
This is the mysterious hunting spot she discovered. Pheasants often lay eggs here, allowing her to steal a couple of eggs every now and then to improve her food.
She was already 12 years old at this time, and the expedition outfit made her figure look even more slender. Compared with when she first arrived two years ago, she was less childish and more girlish. She was over 1.55 meters tall and was approaching the teacher's height of 1.65 meters.
"Let me take a look... Um, there are five eggs this time? I'll only take two, Ms. Chicken, I hope you won't be angry..." She muttered to herself, took out two eggs from it, smiled, turned around and prepared to leave.
But unfortunately, she was arrested this time, and the pheasant that arrested her looked different from the normal one -
It grew to be about the same height as Rosalyn, and a warty tumor bulged from its head, like a giant, hyperplastic gland covered with wriggling tentacles. Its naked body and fleshy wings were featherless and oozed a sour, foul-smelling mucus.
"Um...you're not in the best shape, Ms. Chicken..." Rosalyn said.
The head was deformed, flesh exposed. By the teacher's standards, this was a typical basic aberration. But in the Glowing Continent, such a monster would be enough to kill four or five adult villagers. Even more terrifying, once scratched by it, the filth would spread, eventually devouring the entire village.
"Ka--!!!" Soon, accompanied by the loud crowing of a rooster, the deformed creature rushed over suddenly, and its sharp beak pierced the air like a sharp knife.
Rosalyn didn't panic. The moment the aberration approached, she was enveloped in a cyan aura, and she instantly moved aside with ease. Then, she gently raised her hand, and a dozen blue bullets, each the size of a pinky finger, poured out like a shotgun, freezing the pheasant into an ice sculpture.
"...Let me help you get rid of it." She sighed softly, raised her hand and snapped her fingers, and red flames swept out, enveloping the pheasant.
Although the deformed pheasant was still roaring at the last moment, it soon struggled to the ground and turned into a charred corpse.
After disposing of the deformed pheasant, Rosalyn felt a bit melancholy. Although she had been severely humiliated by Ms. Chicken when she came here to steal eggs before, it was a case of fighting and acquaintance. Now, a year later, Ms. Chicken was gone, leaving her, already without a playmate, feeling even more lonely.
I don't know what kind of life the teacher led before I came... But a reclusive master like the teacher shouldn't be as lonely as I am. Even without me, she can live a leisurely and happy life. It's me who needs her...
After bowing deeply to the pheasant lady and observing a minute of silence, Rosalyn turned to leave with the eggs in her hand. But just as she was about to move, another chicken blocked her way, looking at her angrily, its small body filled with great energy.
Rosalyn looked at the more familiar-looking hen in front of her, then at the ugly corpse not far away, to which she had bowed and mourned. Her expression froze for a moment: "...Ah?"
…
"Where have you been? Did you run outside the security perimeter again?" Looking at Rosaline whose hair was much messier than usual, Yvette asked puzzledly while sitting in the tea room of the manor, holding a book.
Since she gifted Rosaline a Sky Ring Y2 two years ago and continued to help her improve and add new magic, she has now developed a certain degree of autonomy and no longer needs Yvette's constant presence. To this end, Yvette has specially divided the map of Ish City into zones: a three-kilometer radius around the manor is a safe zone, free to move; outside, the central area requires permission to explore; and all areas beyond this are strictly prohibited.
The reason for her caution was that during her recent explorations, she had discovered some high-level aberrations in the Ish Mountains and Luya City, seemingly at a high evolutionary level. Unaware of their details and the sheer number of ordinary aberrations nearby, she had avoided approaching. However, this didn't stop her from suspecting that the high-risk areas she'd marked contained even higher-level, boss-level aberrations—a situation where aberrations evolved by devouring each other. The entire Ish Island was a giant breeding ground, and the birth of high-level aberrations wasn't surprising, if anything, inevitable.
"No, no, teacher, you warned me, I won't go!" Rosalyn hurriedly explained, then scratched her head embarrassedly, "I got hit by a chicken..."
Yvette fell silent, looked at her a few times, and continued to read with her head down. Half an hour later, Rosalyn brought over the fried eggs along with the rest of the lunch. Only then did she close the book with satisfaction in the tea room and leisurely enjoy the lunch given by her apprentice.
The sun was shining brightly at this time. Perhaps due to its geographical location far from the equator, the midsummer heat was not particularly hot, but rather comfortable. A strong wind blew, and the clouds in the sky dispersed, revealing a clear blue sky.
After dinner, Yvette stood up and said, "Let's go to the fog."
…
The "fog" that Yvette mentioned was a dream fog. At least in her opinion, it should be a dream fog, just like the fog she saw when she was exploring the minus tenth floor of the Abyss Base timidly three hundred years ago.
That discovery came from a recent exploration of the "Blackwater District." Rosalyn was the first to enter a ruined building that hadn't collapsed yet, and she discovered the pervasive fog on the second floor. When Yvette ascended the old staircase, she was shocked to find herself engulfed in the white mist.
but……
Why didn't it trigger?
Yvette didn't understand, but she was certain of one thing: it wasn't normal fog, and there was no reason for it to form there. Rosalyn could enter and exit the fog safely, either because the fog wasn't powerful enough to drag people into sleep, or because—
The dream fog only works on her.
Considering that she once brought things from her dream back to the present day in the fog, even though they were just simple clothes, it still proved that she seemed to have a strange connection with the dream fog, and it was a connection that others, at least people from another world, could not reach.
Now, she was going to reveal the true face of the fog. If it was really a dream fog, she would definitely fall asleep there, and the unaffected Rosaline could be by her side to protect her sleeping body in reality.
It turns out that taking in disciples is useful.
…
This time, Yvette and Rosaline's vehicle has been upgraded. It is now a magic motorcycle with low-altitude flight capabilities and can float up to 200 meters.
However, compared with the land mode, the magic power consumption in the flight mode will be rapidly depleted. In addition, the element capacitor will experience "element attenuation" over time. The magic motorcycle that once had a range of thousands of kilometers now has a range of less than 100 kilometers. Yvette has to stop halfway every time and use herself as a battery to recharge the magic motorcycle.
Fortunately, the technology of "element replenishment" was developed before the apocalypse. If a capacitor with elemental decay appears, it can be restored to full health by replenishing the decayed elements... Well, if I can successfully return to the past this time, I'll take the opportunity to collect some technical knowledge in this area... Knowledge changes destiny...
She began to plan silently, feeling that she was one step closer to becoming a professional "magic mechanical engineer".
An hour later, Yvette and Rosalyn landed the magic motorcycle in a wasteland next to the facility where the Dream Mist was located.
Then, according to the plan, the two of them carried out a large-scale sweep in the area, eliminating all the mutants that might threaten them in advance.
Finally, they used wind magic to move some large items, entered the building, and blocked all intersections, thus completing all the safety preparations for the operation.
"Teacher, I still don't feel anything." Rosalyn turned her head and said as she walked down the stairs to the second floor and entered the mist.
Seeing this, Yvette hesitated for a moment and tentatively walked upstairs. However, the moment her body was completely engulfed by the mist, the drowsiness she had experienced before came back.
"You stay here... and look after... me..." After finishing these instructions with great effort, she lay on the ground on her side, resting her head on her arm, and fell into a deep sleep.
