Chapter 128-127- Escape
Tick, tick, tick.
In the dim sewer, drops of water seeping from the ceiling hit the steps of the aqueduct. The light of the flashlight fell, illuminating the wet ground covered with oil stains. Liana followed behind Firefly, moving forward cautiously. The air was filled with the pungent and sour smell of decaying organic matter, which made people frown unconsciously.
Not long after, Liana felt Zero in her arms move. She lowered her head and saw Zero's dark red pupils looking at her hazily, as if he had just woken up from a dream, and seemed not to understand what had happened.
"Sleep a little longer?" Liana suggested.
Zero shook his head, let go of her body, stood on the stone slabs of the sewer, looked around, then wrinkled his nose with a look of disgust.
"Where is this?"
"The sewer," Liana said.
"Why are we here?"
"He's running away. This is the planned route."
"She ordered it?"
"We all decided this together. You were sleeping."
"Oh~"
Zero was yawning lazily, and seemed to have completely lost interest in the atmosphere of escaping, as if he was just playing a game.
"Yvette, do you want to join the battle?" Firefly turned its head and asked. It was using the body of an old housekeeping puppet. Although it had a gun in its hand, it was still not very confident about the possible battle in a while.
Since escaping from the Abyss Base, Zero has been responsible for handling all dangers. Firefly and Liana have fighting ability but almost no combat experience. When encountering situations, they cannot remain calm and even handle them with ease like Zero.
Zero was about to nod, but Liana said, "No, you should continue to rest."
Zero looked at her and saw Liana looking at her firmly. She said gently and seriously, "You're not in good condition. We can take care of it."
Since arriving in Fusjiang, or more precisely, during her last few days in New Eden, Zero has been experiencing an inexplicable bout of intense sleepiness. Liana has questioned her about whether it's from overuse or illness, but she's always been told, "Nothing."
Of course, Liana didn't believe that this was okay, but even if there was something wrong, she was helpless. So the only thing she could do was to let Zero consume as little energy as possible and rest more. The rest of the things would be shared by her and Firefly.
In the dim light, Zero chuckled, obviously understanding what she meant. He nodded and said, "Okay, unless it's absolutely necessary, I won't take action."
Liana smiled slightly and said confidently, "Just watch carefully!"
They continued forward. Firefly, with her steely frame, powerful guns, and flashlight, led the way. Liana followed, like a lurking tabby cat, ready to strike any enemy with her shadow touch. Zero was the laziest, squinting and dozing as he walked, his eyelids constantly fighting.
A few minutes later, the first group of enemies appeared around the corner.
It was an exit from the sewer system. The wet canal reflected the orange light. Three priests in white robes stood there guarding it. One of them held a long staff, one held a glowing shield, and the last one held a gun, forming a three-person team capable of both offense and defense.
Although their helmets were fully reflective mirrors and their faces could not be seen, their voices echoed back, as if they were very dissatisfied with the job of guarding the sewers and were complaining.
"Do you want to shoot?" Firefly asked. The gun was a high-end product that Zero had robbed from somewhere. It used enchanted bullets and was loaded with powerful pulse spells. Combined with alloy bullets, it could penetrate steel plates and ordinary magic barriers.
As long as the three priests didn't have time to raise their shields, with Firefly's aiming ability, he could probably hit them in the head with three shots and wipe out the entire enemy team in an instant.
"I'll go first!" Liana shook her head. Under the black cloak, the Touch of Shadow emerged, sticking to the black stone walls and cast iron pipes of the sewer, like three black snakes, silently approaching the three priests.
Then, muffled groans echoed, and the three white-robed priests collapsed. They had also undergone semi-mechanized cybernetic transformations, even their hearts were artificial, but the touch of shadow possessed terrifying penetrating power, piercing their helmets directly, leaving them dead instantly without even a chance to scream.
"That's amazing, Liana! If your abilities grow, you'll be as powerful as your sister, right?" Yinghuo said in amazement. "Maybe even more powerful than Yvette."
"It would be great if that day really came." Liana said longingly.
Zero kicked Firefly and said unhappily, "Lead the way."
"Oh oh..." Firefly quickly stepped forward.
The three continued to move forward. Every time they encountered a team of priests on duty, Liana would assassinate them silently, and Firefly would hack into the communication equipment they dropped to maintain contact on behalf of the dead.
In this way, in the eyes of the commander of the Guardian Corps, these areas remain in perfect harmony, and every call will receive an accurate and fast response.
The journey into the sewer lasted for dozens of minutes. When everyone finally emerged from a crack in the fence of an abandoned sewage treatment plant, the cold air that hit their faces lifted Liana's spirits - although the smell here was not pleasant, it was better than the sewer.
"Where is this?" Zero looked around curiously.
"The old factory area is now abandoned. It used to be a gathering place for homeless people from Fusjiang, but since martial law began, everyone here has been cleared out."
Yinghuo introduced: "There are many abandoned factories here. My sister has placed a lot of daily necessities here for us in advance, which can sustain us for at least half a month."
Liana, also visiting here for the first time, gazed upon the old factory buildings beside the river. Their outlines, faintly visible in the darkness, reminded her of the old school buildings often used as adventure locations in horror films.
"Our safe house is inside." Firefly said, guiding the two towards a huge factory nearby.
When she got closer, with the help of starlight and moonlight, Liana could see the outline of the factory more clearly.
It seemed to be a steel mill with a huge blast furnace, but it had been abandoned for a long time. The factory was surrounded by wasteland, and further away were the city blocks and endless neon lights.
Beyond that, on one side of the wasteland lay a river connected to an abandoned sewage treatment plant. Large patches of multicolored fluorescence permeated the river, as if contaminated by some magical potion. It was both disgusting and strange to watch.
"Is it possible to send a signal to my sister to retreat..." Firefly said as she walked, but at this moment, a fleeting figure in the shadows caught her attention, and she shouted, "Who?!"
The newcomer stood in the shadow of the building, his steps slow. But when he was within about 100 meters of the three people, he suddenly accelerated and rushed straight towards them! In the flashlight's light, Liana saw the other person clearly. He was a man with glowing green eyes and an eerily pale complexion.
——Zombies!
The same words flashed through Liana and Firefly's minds.
As expected, the Holy Spirit Sect couldn't have missed this place. The reason they didn't send the Guardians, police or army to stand guard here is because there are undead wandering around here... Doesn't that mean that there is at least one necromancer hiding in this place?
Subconsciously, Yinghuo pulled the trigger, and an enchanted bullet with a powerful pulse spewed out of the barrel, knocking the zombie away. But unexpectedly, its head did not explode, but only twisted and deformed. It quickly used its hands and feet to quickly climb up from the ground.
Firefly fired several shots in succession, and finally blew up the zombie's head, sending juice flying all over the sky.
Then it put away its gun and said nervously, "Liana, the necromancer here seems to be very powerful!"
"Why?" Liana asked.
"The gun I'm using is from Black Tower Pharmaceuticals' high-end series. It should kill ordinary zombies instantly with a headshot, but I had to shoot that zombie in the head three times. This only proves that the necromancer behind it is very skilled." Firefly calmly analyzed the situation, then her tone quickly turned timid. "Uh, how about we go back to the sewers? It doesn't seem safe here either..."
"Don't be nervous!" Liana said firmly, "My sister said that the Necromancer's true form is very weak. As long as we find the true form, I can deal with it."
At this moment, Zero suddenly patted Liana's arm, and when Liana looked over, she pointed to the wasteland next to her.
Then, Liana saw that the ground over there had been in a strange state of wriggling, as if countless field mice were moving around underneath. After a while, one pale human hand after another crawled out from under the soil, looking creepy in the moonlight.
"Let's go!" Liana grabbed Zero's wrist and rushed into the depths of the steel plant, intending to cross the entire abandoned factory and escape from the other side.
Firefly followed behind the two little girls, covering their retreat and shooting, repelling the zombies that were in the front.
"This is too much!!" Ten seconds later, seeing a dense swarm of zombies rushing towards him from behind, Yinghuo put away his gun and ran away while shouting, "Do you think they will eat the puppets?"
"I don't know..." Liana was also very scared. She was just a 10-year-old girl. Even if she had the ability to fight, how could she not be terrified when she saw ghosts and monsters?
She immediately ran as fast as she could, leaving only a trail of afterimages behind her. Zero was grabbed by her wrist, with both feet off the ground, floating behind her like a flag, with a smile on her face, as if she was enjoying the feeling of being carried away.
Seconds later, another group of zombies emerged from the shadows of the steel mill building ahead, their eyes glowing green, blocking their path. As a last resort, Liana activated Shadow Touch, lashing out with three whips, sending the zombies flying and clearing a path.
"Charge!" Liana breathed a sigh of relief. She almost let Zero take action, but now, the situation didn't seem to have reached that point.
Passing through the narrow gap between the buildings, a relatively open grassland appeared in front of us, and we could also see the abandoned wall in the distance.
But just as they were about to escape, a gigantic zombie, over three meters tall, leaped from the top of the abandoned steel mill's blast furnace, landing in front of the three of them, sending up a cloud of dust. Simultaneously, the surrounding zombies' behavior shifted, no longer swarming them frantically. Instead, they stopped at a certain distance and gathered around them, surrounding them a hundred meters away.
Liana didn't understand what was going on, so she looked over cautiously and found that although the zombie giant's eyes were glowing, his expression was not dull, but even somewhat rich, and he was obviously intelligent.
"Who are you?" Liana asked coldly.
"Hi, hello, cute little mice, and the iron lump next to you. My name is 'Ducha Besemai', and my position in the Holy Church is 'High Priest of Reincarnation'. Nice to meet you." The giant zombie said with a smile.
