Yun Ningyan followed him toward the brigade headquarters. She quietly took out three packs of Daqianmen cigarettes from her spatial storage, thinking about what she would talk to the brigade leader about later.
After walking for five minutes, Huo Junshan turned around and said, "We're here."
She was still lost in thought when she realized they had arrived so quickly. She smiled at Huo Junshan and said, "Thank you."
The brigade headquarters consisted of only three mud-brick houses. The walls were mottled and pitted from wind and rain. She followed the man into a room lit by a yellowish light, where the brigade leader was puffing on his pipe.
Upon seeing Huo Junshan, the captain glanced at him and said, "You're here? You always make excuses when I ask you to help me..."
The conversation abruptly stopped when the captain saw Yun Ningyan following behind.
He looked at his nephew with a gossipy expression. He had never seen his nephew show any interest in any girl before. His wife had introduced him to several girls, but he hadn't taken a liking to any of them. He had assumed that his nephew wasn't interested in young women.
It seems my nephew has finally figured things out.
Huo Junshan glanced calmly at his pipe, and the captain silently extinguished it.
It seems he guessed correctly.
"Captain, I've come to collect my rations."
"Help Yun weigh the grain and carry it back for her later. It's not safe for her to go alone."
Yun Ningyan initially wanted to refuse, but thinking of that big wolfhound, she had no choice but to nod.
He took out a bottle of Daqianmen cigarettes from behind his back, glanced at the accountant who was doing the books with his head down, put it in front of the brigade leader, and said with a smile, "Brigade leader, I've been in poor health since I was a child, and I can't sleep if there's even the slightest noise. I saw that there are some unused pigsties at the educated youth settlement, and I'd like to pay for them myself to repair. Do you think you could find someone to help me repair them?"
The captain looked at the Daqianmen cigarettes. He had never tasted them before, but he couldn't just take advantage of them for nothing.
He coldly rebuked, "Yun Zhiqing, what are you doing? Take it back! What will people think of me if they see this?"
Yun Ningyan blinked her eyes a few times and they turned red. She pretended to be a little scared and rubbed her hands together.
“Uncle Captain, I’m young and I may not do things perfectly. My parents have not been around me since I was little, and my aunt doesn’t care much about me. You are my elder, so it’s normal for me to give you things to show my respect. No one can say anything about it.”
The captain glanced at the accountant, who was engrossed in keeping track of the books. The old man didn't say anything and just pretended not to hear. What a cunning old fox!
With the little girl saying that, he had no reason to refuse. Oh well, she's a pitiful child, he'll take better care of her in the future.
He looked at Yun Ningyan with affection, thinking that she might become his niece-in-law in the future. "Girl, work hard here. If you need anything, come to your uncle's house and let your aunt make you dumplings. Let Xiao Huo help you with the house repairs; he's a very capable worker."
Yun Ningyan's eyes visibly brightened, and she politely thanked the brigade leader, saying, "Uncle Captain, don't worry, I will definitely dedicate myself to building up the countryside."
The brigade leader nodded in satisfaction and waved for the two to leave quickly, as other educated youths would be coming to collect their grain later.
Huo Junshan carried the grain away. There were two bags of grain, one bag of coarse grains and the other bag of sweet potatoes and potatoes, which weighed 40 jin in total.
She followed behind, somewhat shocked.
Wow, this weighs 40 pounds! Doesn't it take any effort at all? It's like you're carrying a little chick.
That person is incredibly strong!
Huo Junshan walked ahead and, upon hearing the little girl's thoughts again, smiled.
The little girl is quite cute.
As they approached the educated youth settlement, they encountered Song Pandi. Yun Ningyan initially intended to walk right past her without paying her any attention.
But Song Pandi, along with Lin Mengmeng and Zhang Qiang, who were traveling with her, ruined her reputation from afar: "Yun Ningyan is really restless. She just arrived in the village and she's already seducing the villagers. She's shameless and desperate for men."
Lin Mengmeng felt a little embarrassed when she heard her speak so bluntly about Yun Zhiqing. "Song Zhiqing, we don't know the situation. Don't talk nonsense. It will ruin Yun Zhiqing's reputation."
Song Pandi sneered: I want to ruin her reputation. She should die, you bitch!
Huo Junshan's face darkened. He heard the ugly woman's inner thoughts; this woman was too vicious.
Yun Ningyan clenched her fist, suppressing the urge to hit someone, and silently chanted in her heart: I can't hit someone, I can't hit someone, I can't scare the beauty, it won't look good if she's frightened.
Huo Junshan's originally unpleasant face slowly began to redden. He glanced at Yun Ningyan out of the corner of his eye. So her name was Yun Ningyan. What a beautiful name.
Song Pandi's words became increasingly offensive: "I'm not wrong either. Look, Yun Ningyan is practically glued to him. What a vixen."
Yun Ningyan suddenly laughed, "Even if you're a fox spirit, you're not qualified. You want to be a fox spirit, but unfortunately, you're too ugly! Seeing you makes me want to throw up my dinner from last night. You're so ugly that even heaven and earth resent you, so don't come out and disgust people."
Yun Ningyan sighed, pretending to be very worried, and said, "Oh! You haven't brushed your teeth for days, your breath stinks! I can smell the stench even here."
Yun Ningyan said this because Song Pandi must not have washed up during the three days and two nights on the train.
Sure enough, upon hearing her say that, Song Pandi raised her hand, breathed on her palm, smelled it, and then frowned.
Her action caused Lin Mengmeng and Zhang Qiang to each take a step back to the sides, especially Zhang Qiang, who covered his mouth and nose in disgust.
Seeing Song Pandi's actions, Yun Ningyan couldn't help but burst out laughing, "Hahaha..."
Even Huo Junshan's lips twitched slightly.
Hearing the laughter, Song Pandi realized she had been tricked again. Her voice suddenly rose, "You tricked me?"
She rushed towards Yun Ningyan, raising her hand to strike, but her wrist was grabbed tightly. Huo Junshan roared, "Get out of my way!"
He angrily shook off Song Pandi, saying, "If you don't get out of here, I don't mind hitting women!"
Song Pandi had already experienced his strength, so she dared not curse him anymore. This peasant was too fierce and might actually dare to hit her.
She got up, grinning shamelessly, and said, "I was just joking with my cousin, just kidding."
After saying that, he turned and ran, followed by the loud laughter of Yun Ningyan and Lin Mengmeng.
Lin Mengmeng looked at Yun Ningyan with starry eyes and said, "Ningning, can I call you that? You're so amazing! I want to be your friend."
Yun Ningyan nodded, "Of course, but in this life, it's either you or me. If you want to be friends with me, you can't get close to Song Pandi. I don't want to be betrayed."
Being in an unfamiliar place, she didn't want to cause trouble for herself, but finding companions was still very necessary. Lin Mengmeng seemed very naive and could befriend her.
After Lin Mengmeng and Zhang Qiang left, Huo Junshan put the grain at the entrance of the educated youth settlement and said, "I'll bring people over to repair the house tomorrow."
After saying that, he took a step and was about to leave.
Yun Ningyan quickly called out to him, "Um, does anyone in the village know carpentry? I'd like to make some furniture."
Huo Junshan said, "I'll move you over once the house is repaired."
