Huo Changgen took two men to find the brigade leader.
The brigade leader sat on the kang (a heated brick bed) and listened to Yao Tingting and Zhang Youcai's stories.
He let out a heavy sigh.
Then he lit his pipe and started smoking.
He didn't speak, and neither did anyone else.
He remained silent because he had no better solution.
Zhang Guihua spoke first: "If you two want to get married, you first need your mother's consent."
