Chapter 6 Rubbing against his leg

Yun Ningyan was assigned a plot of cornfield. She stared at the golden corn and was a little dumbfounded.

She never did farm work in her past life, what should we do? We can make her hit people, but making her do farm work is beyond her capabilities.

Just as she was worrying, Huo Junshan arrived. Without saying a word, he went into the field, quickly picked off several ears of corn, and then threw them together in piles.

She mimicked his movements, tossing the corn together. Huo Junshan's gaze fell on her fair little hands moving among the corn cobs. His eyes darkened. She hadn't even put on gloves; her hands clearly weren't for manual labor.

After Yun Ningyan broke off a few sticks, she realized he had already left. A little while later, Huo Junshan returned, holding a pair of work gloves. He stuffed them into Yun Ningyan's hands and turned to leave.

Yun Ningyan held the gloves and grinned foolishly. She had forgotten to wear gloves for a moment. She didn't expect this beauty to be so caring. She wondered which girl would be lucky enough to have her.

Huo Junshan listened to her innermost thoughts and ran away as if fleeing.

She only managed to break off a tiny bit all morning; she was so tired. She'd never been this tired even when hitting someone; her hands were a little sore.

Breakfast was the same as last night. After eating, I didn't dare to stop and went to the fields with my tools.

Although it was her first day on the job, she couldn't be too shabby. Gradually, she found the trick: holding the corn stalk with one hand, she could easily twist the corn cob off the cob, making her much faster.

But she only earned 4 centimeters in a day. Among the new female educated youth, Lin Mengmeng only managed 3 centimeters and Song Pandi only managed 2 centimeters. She planned not to appear too capable, lest she attract the attention of someone with ulterior motives. She didn't lack food or drink, so she planned to work 2 centimeters tomorrow as well.

When she returned to the educated youth settlement, her pigsty was under construction and almost finished. Lin Mengmeng asked her in surprise, "Ningning, are you moving out? I also want to live alone."

"There's another one over there. Go talk to the captain and ask him to fix it for you."

Lin Mengmeng excitedly ran towards the brigade leader's house.

Huo Junshan and another man worked very quickly. They had already finished everything else and were now installing the door. They had left her a small window, through which she could see that the kang (a heated brick bed) inside was already set up and was damp.

She walked over and looked around curiously. She discovered that a small kitchen had been added outside the house, built with adobe bricks. Two walls connected it to her room. The kitchen had a thatched roof, so she didn't have to worry about it getting wet in the rain.

Seeing that the two of them were sweating profusely, Yun Ningyan went back into the house and made two cups of sugar water, bringing them over. "Take a break and have some water."

Huo Junshan tilted his head back and drank it all in one gulp. His Adam's apple bobbed up and down a few times. The water in the cup was gone. Beads of sweat trickled down his handsome chin to his neck, past his Adam's apple, and down his neck. Yun Ningyan wanted to look down along the sweat beads, but her shirt completely blocked her view.

She took the cup back to her room. The other educated youth had already returned one after another. When Song Pandi learned that Yun Ningyan was going to live alone, her eyes darted around.

Some were envious, while others were disdainful. They didn't have Yun Ningyan's money, so living alone was impossible. Even getting enough to eat was a problem, so they couldn't think about anything else.

After Yun Ningyan left, Huo Jianshe, who was standing next to Huo Junshan, finally dared to speak. He nudged Huo Junshan's arm and said, "Third Brother, have you taken a liking to her? She's really pretty. Are you going to pursue her? If not, I will."

Huo Junshan glanced at the educated youth watching the commotion and warned in a low voice, "Don't get any funny ideas, or I'll break your legs!"

Huo Jianshe hurriedly assured him that he wouldn't dare to have any wicked thoughts, but how could he not see that his third brother had such ideas?

When Yun Ningyan came out again, she was carrying a few apples. She had taken them out of her space because she didn't have a stove or a pot and couldn't treat them to a meal, so she could only offer them apples instead.

At this moment, Lin Mengmeng returned and excitedly called out to Yun Ningyan, "Ningning, I've talked to the captain, and he's asked Comrade Huo to help me fix it."

Yun Ningyan nodded.

Huo Junshan and Huo Jianshe had already started packing their things when Yun Ningyan handed them over money and fruit, saying, "Comrade Huo, this is a thank-you gift."

Huo Junshan initially wanted to say no, but seeing so many people watching, he thought about it and accepted it.

Lin Mengmeng smiled and said, "Comrade Huo, when will you help me fix this? Like Yun Zhiqing, I'll pay for it myself."

Huo Junshan originally wanted to refuse, but when he saw Yun Ningyan's smiling, crescent-shaped eyes, he immediately changed his mind and said, "Okay."

As soon as Huo Junshan left, Song Pandi immediately started looking around the house. She was thinking that she was going to live with Yun Ningyan. Yun Ningyan had caused her family to not give her any money, only the 50 yuan subsidy she received for going to the countryside. She had also bought a lot of things, leaving her with 20 yuan. If she could live with Yun Ningyan, she could save a lot on food and drink.

She made up her mind to rely on Yun Ningyan when the time came.

Yun Ningyan looked at the apple in her hand thoughtfully; Huo Junshan hadn't taken the apple away just now.

She carried the apples out and, after asking around, finally found out about the Huo family.

Li Xiangyun opened the door and was stunned by the person who came in. She was clearly a fairy descended from heaven, with delicate skin and a rosy complexion. She didn't look like someone who did manual labor at all. Just looking at her made her feel sorry for her.

Who are you looking for?

Yun Ningyan smiled at her and sweetly greeted, "Hello, Auntie. I'm Yun Ningyan, a newly arrived educated youth. I've come to thank Brother Huo for helping me repair my house."

"Oh, come in quickly, girl," Li Xiangyun said, pulling the girl into the courtyard and casually moving a stool for her to sit down. The more she looked at the girl, the more she liked her.

She shouted into the house at the top of her lungs, "Third brother, third brother, someone is looking for you."

Huo Junshan came out wearing a vest and shorts. He looked like he had just taken a shower, as his body was still damp and his hair was dripping wet.

He spotted Yun Ningyan sitting in the courtyard at a glance, immediately turned around and went back into the house. Just as Yun Ningyan was wondering what was going on, he dressed himself and opened the door again.

They were still wearing patched clothes, but now they were long-sleeved shirts and trousers. Li Xiangyun burst out laughing, and Yun Ningyan laughed along, which made Huo Junshan's ears turn bright red.

Li Xiangyun never expected that her third son would know how to change his clothes. He had never even glanced at his previous blind dates, but he never expected that his son would like someone like Yun Zhiqing.

Yun Ningyan thought Huo Junshan was really innocent; his ears would turn red just from being teased a little.

She suddenly felt an itch in her hands and really wanted to touch her bright red ears.

Li Xiangyun suddenly slapped her thigh and exclaimed, "Oh dear, I still have rice cooking in the pot, I'll go check it out."

"Brother Huo, I've come to deliver some apples. I'll treat you to a meal after I move. I'm heading back now." She put down the apples and got up to leave.

Huo Junshan followed behind her, saying, "I'll see you off; it's getting dark."

The two walked side by side when she suddenly asked curiously, "Where's Big Black? I haven't seen it."

Huo Junshan pinched his thumb and forefinger together, put them to his lips, and whistled.

A loud bark came from not far away, and it rushed over in a few moments, wagging its tail and standing in front of him, affectionately rubbing against his leg.

"Was he planning to take me to the brigade headquarters that day?" Yun Ningyan asked.

Huo Junshan nodded. "Dahei doesn't bite. He grew up with me since he was a baby. If you don't believe me, touch his head."

She tentatively reached out her hand, but Dahei didn't move. It wagged its tail and looked at her with excited eyes.
