Chapter 8 Don't be afraid, it's me

Huo Junshan continued to work on furniture in the courtyard, while Dahei silently squatted beside him, keeping him company.

Li Xiangyun walked up to her son and asked, "Third son, was this furniture made for Yun, the educated youth?"

Huo Junshan remained silent, while Li Xiangyun was a little worried. She felt that her third son had gone mad. At first, she was quite excited when she found out that her son had come to his senses, but now that she thought about it, that Yun educated youth looked like a fairy and clearly came from a well-off family. How could she possibly be interested in peasants like them?

She never even dared to dream of her son marrying a city girl.

Huo Junshan stopped what he was doing. A set of cabinets, a box, a table, and a chair were all finished. He nodded in satisfaction and then carefully checked them again, afraid that there might be any splinters that hadn't been dealt with properly.

The weather has been nice these past few days, and the wood has all dried. Once the little girl moves in, the furniture will be moved to her new place.

Thinking of the girl's charming smile, his expression softened. This morning, with so many people resting on the ridges of the fields, he didn't dare to look up at her, afraid that someone would discover his feelings.

Big Black grabbed his clothes and dragged him outside. Seeing that the direction was the educated youth settlement, he scolded, "Big Black, not now. We'll go there tonight."

He finally made it to night, and after his parents had gone to sleep, he took his tools and removed the glass from their room. This was the only piece of glass in their house; the other windows were all made of paper.

I'll go to the county town after the autumn harvest and get one for my parents.

He carefully removed the glass, covered it with paper, and took Dahei with him to the educated youth settlement.

The educated youth compound was quiet. He installed the glass by the moonlight, then found two bundles of firewood to heat the kang (a heated brick bed). It was almost dry, and he could move in tomorrow.

The next day, when Yun Ningyan got up, she was surprised to find that her little house had a glass panel installed, and she also found wood ash under the stove. She raised her eyebrows and thought that it seemed she could move in today.

Today it was her and Lin Mengmeng's turn to make breakfast. The two of them came back half an hour earlier than the others. She recalled the original owner's cooking order, first kneading out the steamed buns made from the two-part dough and putting them in the pot to steam, while Lin Mengmeng was in charge of tending the fire.

Then cook a pot of corn porridge and stir-fry some shredded potatoes.

The educated youth still brought their lunch to eat in the fields.

The Huo family.

When Li Xiangyun returned from work, she found that the glass in their room had mysteriously disappeared, and the window had been covered with paper. When did the thief steal it? It was definitely there yesterday.

She muttered to herself, "Who's so despicable as to steal a piece of glass? If I find out who stole it, I'll break their legs."

Big Black howled at her, and Li Xiangyun said irritably, "I'm not hitting your leg."

She slapped her thigh and exclaimed, "Wait a minute!"

This big black dog is usually very clever. If there was a thief stealing the window, why didn't I hear it barking yesterday?

She had a feeling that the glass was probably taken by the third brother.

The men of the Huo family returned one after another for dinner. Huo Jianshe saw his mother cursing and swearing, so he asked, "Mom, who upset you?"

"Fifth brother, where's your third brother?"

Huo Jianshe's eyes darted around. "Mother, Third Brother is behind us. Mother, I saw Third Brother take down the glass in your room in the middle of the night yesterday. Don't tell me..."

It was I who said it.

Before he could finish speaking, Huo Junshan entered the courtyard, startling him so much that he almost bit his tongue.

Huo Junshan's face was cold, while Huo Jianshe trembled inwardly: Could it be that Third Brother heard everything? I'm doomed now, will Third Brother beat me? It's all my fault for talking too much.

He patted his mouth and said with an embarrassed smile, "Third Brother, I'm going to eat, I'm going to eat."

Huo Junshan's expression softened as he listened to Huo Jianshe's thoughts. He knew last night that Lao Wu had seen him, and he didn't intend to hide it from his family.

“I took it apart. You can use the paper one for now. I’ll get another one after the autumn harvest.”

Since he had said that, Li Xiangyun couldn't say anything. She felt that her son was about to die; how could he destroy the family to chase after a girl?

Huo Changgen waved his hand dismissively, "So what if it's been demolished? You were the one who brought it back in the first place. Let's eat."

During the meal, Sister-in-law Huo couldn't hold back any longer and blurted out, "Third brother, my cousin says she wants to try dating you again."

Li Xiangyun's heart pounded. This eldest daughter-in-law was looking for trouble again, so she immediately glared at her.

Of her sons, the third one is the most opinionated. She brought up this matter once last year, and the third one refused. Her cousin went home crying and making a scene, bringing her whole family over and saying that the third one looked down on her and even hit her. This incident caused the Huo family a great loss of face.

Who knew that this eldest daughter-in-law would go back to her parents' home and then come back to talk about her cousin?

Seeing that his mother looked unwell, Huo Jianguo quickly put some food on her plate and said to his wife, "Just eat your food and take care of the children. Don't meddle in things that aren't your business."

Li Xiangyun said with a dark face, "You still dare to mention your cousin? What kind of person is she? If it weren't for her, Lao San wouldn't have been misunderstood by the people in the team. Your cousin is telling everyone that Lao San even beats women. If you dare to mention this again, you can go back to your parents' home."

Huo Junshan sneered and slammed down his chopsticks. "Sister-in-law, if you're really that free, go to work. Go today."

Upon hearing this, Huo Jiandang, Huo Jianjun, and Huo Jianshe immediately lowered their heads and started eating. If the youngest brother was in a bad mood, they could just make him work for 12 centimeters.

He could only sympathize with his sister-in-law in silence, not daring to say a word.

It's not that they're afraid of the third brother, it's that the third brother's fighting skills are too high, and they can't beat him.

Sister-in-law Huo felt a surge of resentment. She turned to look at Huo Jianguo, but he was only focused on eating and didn't say a word in her defense.

Huo Jianguo was also helpless. His wife was just too sharp-tongued. After working for a few days, she learned her lesson.
