Broken string
Jiang Yingyue should be with the Qin Envoy right now. After Ji Yinglei recovered, she left without looking back. Bai Yu watched her back from where he was. Although the two of them didn't have much contact, they understood each other very well.
They all knew perfectly well that the other side was still plotting how to kill them: "It's just a pity for my messengers... to play this game with you."
Ji Yinglei rushed to the location of the Qin Envoy, only to find Jiang Yingyue collapsed. Her heart skipped a beat, but before she could think about it, Ye Qingzhu spotted her.
"Quick, cover your ears!" She immediately went to Ye Qingzhu's side, but felt something was strange, "Why weren't you...?"
Ye Qingzhu simply pointed to her right ear, and Ji Yinglei immediately understood. In the previous battle, her right ear had been completely deafened, and her left ear had also suffered considerable damage. That was why she hadn't been hit as quickly as Jiang Yingyue.
Fortunately, Ji Yinglei had learned from Bai Yu beforehand that as long as one's mind is free of distractions, it is difficult to be influenced by the zither player. There was no time to explain further, and the two immediately joined forces to protect Jiang Yingyue. After a long stalemate, Jiang Yingyue finally opened her eyes.
As Ning fell, Xuan also let out a roar, then jumped off the roof. He hugged his brother, only able to utter a few sobs.
Blood kept gushing from Ning's mouth. Even though he had a thousand words he wanted to say, he couldn't utter a single one. His eyes were filled with guilt. The two brothers looked at each other, but neither could express anything more.
Ning and Xuan have been with Bai Yu since they were young. The early death of their parents and the constant wars made Ning realize that she had to protect her younger brother. Bai Yu gave them everything, and with him by their side, they didn't need to worry about anything.
The day Ning became Bai Yu's right and left protectors, he finally felt at ease. He thought his life would stay the same, and he and his brother had finally settled down. But Bai Yu didn't think so. The Jiangyuan affair made him eager to recruit more people. The more people around him, the more Ning felt that his hard-won stable life was being disrupted.
Looking at Xuan, who was weeping uncontrollably, he couldn't tell whether the tears on his face were Xuan's or his own. For so many years, he had been trying to find better things for his younger brother, but he had forgotten that Xuan's only wish had always been to be with his older brother, and that was enough.
But now, everything seems so distant. Ning clearly felt his consciousness gradually fading until the very end. At least, all he felt was his younger brother's embrace.
Xuan, who was always quiet, was even silent in his breakdown. He watched helplessly as his only family member left him. For so many years, they had only each other. At this moment, the last thread of reason in Xuan's mind snapped. He grabbed the broken wood shards from the ancient zither beside him and plunged them into his own neck without hesitation.
Until the very end of their lives, they never hated Bai Yu.
This scene is incredibly poignant.
Jiang Yingyue's eyes darkened. She had witnessed too much death during this period, and now, facing the Qin Envoy, she felt nothing but sighs.
Not far away, Ye Qingzhu and Ji Yinglei also came over: "Yue'er, how are you?" Faced with Ji Yinglei's caring inquiry, Jiang Yingyue's heart began to waver: Should she trust this kind senior sister in front of her?
"I'm fine," Jiang Yingyue replied casually. Ye Qingzhu quickly noticed this subtle change and immediately asked, "That's good. Miss Ji, where were you taken? How did you escape?"
Ji Yinglei didn't press further: "When the Bell Envoy came, Qingzhu fell into the trap, so I played along. When the Qin Envoy brought me here, I found a chance to escape, and I've been lying in wait here ever since." As she spoke, her expression changed, "Yue'er, I've found the location of the Thunder Sword."
