At first, Song Zhaodi thought that Xie Zhiyan didn't like her.
Shu Ying suddenly thought of something and looked at Xie Zhiyan, "Sister Song hasn't met her parents-in-law yet. Go find their photos and show them to Sister Song."
Xie Zhiyan did not hesitate. There weren't many photos in the family, but Huang Meiling had taken some when she was young. It was only after the children grew up and started their own families that they gradually stopped taking photos.
At the very bottom of the cabinet were photos of Xie Zhiyan's parents when they were young. He came downstairs and handed over a few photos, which Song Zhaodi accepted with trembling hands.
The Huang Meiling in the photo looks almost identical to her now, even down to the expression in her eyes and brows. The only difference is that Huang Meiling's smile is brighter. If the two stood together, they could probably be mistaken for each other.
The black-and-white photograph evoked memories of the past. Song Zhaodi touched the photograph with one hand and wept uncontrollably.
"I have a strange feeling in my heart, as if we are very familiar with each other."
It sounds a bit sentimental, but who would actually connect something to a photograph?
However, Song Zhaodi felt as if they had met before.
Xie Wenyuan was full of vigor and ambition. At that time, the two had not been married for long. His bright eyes were full of enthusiasm for his career. Huang Meiling on the left was even more elegant and gentle. The softness on her face was the composure of an intellectual.
Song Zhaodi looked at these photos and felt somewhat dazed.
She was eagerly anticipating it, but on the other hand, she was also feeling uncontrollably nervous.
She worried that she was just getting her hopes up for nothing, that it was just wishful thinking on her part, and how she could work peacefully in this house afterward? Once a person has a certain expectation in their heart, they can't stop thinking about it.
Shu Ying noticed her anxiety and gently patted her shoulder. "I haven't told you about this because I was worried it would affect your mood. While we were still at the hospital, Grandma had already boarded the return bus. We'll know the results when we get to the hospital tomorrow."
Her voice was gentle yet firm, “Sister Song, you don’t need to feel too much pressure. No matter who you are, what your surname is or what your given name is, it won’t affect our relationship. You will always be my sister.”
Shu Ying had thought things through thoroughly. She knew that Song Zhaodi would definitely be affected. If Xie Wanying really knew about her background all along, she would definitely come to find out. If she could find out something from their faces, who knows what kind of trouble she would cause.
Xie Zhiyan gripped his hand tighter. "Let's keep the evidence in our own hands for now and not spread this around. Xie Wanying shouldn't be paying attention to us right now. Once the evidence is conclusive, we'll settle accounts with the Song family later."
Song Zhaodi suddenly understood. She gripped Shu Ying's hand tightly, as if struck by a sudden realization, "No wonder Xie Wanying ran away in such a hurry when she first met me. So that's what she was worried about!"
Xie Wanying always felt a little guilty whenever she faced her. Song Zhaodi only thought that she was targeting Shu Ying and therefore disliked her as well, so she never took it seriously. But if she had known all along that she was not Xie's biological daughter, then all her actions would make sense.
“She came several times before, but you were never home. I saw her talking to other people but I didn’t think much of it. But she said I was from the mountains and had no manners. I was wondering how she knew I was from the mountains.”
To ensure Song Zhaodi could stay comfortably, Shu Ying always claimed that she was a relative of the family, and everyone assumed that she had come all the way from Shanghai with Shu Ying.
Looking back now, it wasn't a coincidence that Xie Wanying was full of hostility towards her from their very first meeting. Her flustered eyes and guilty expression must have been hiding something.
Shu Ying and Xie Zhiyan exchanged a glance. If that were really the case, then Xie Wanying probably knew about it earlier than they did, but she chose to keep it a secret.
In fact, the fact that the two children were switched back then cannot be blamed on Xie Wanying. Even though she enjoyed the Xie family's resources, she was just a newborn child with no consciousness at the time.
But her mistake was that, despite growing up in the Xie family, she didn't understand the character of Xie Wenyuan and his wife. If she had brought it up herself, the Xie family would not have treated her badly, and they certainly wouldn't have done something as foolish as kicking her out. The grudges between adults don't affect children. It's just that the Xie family has gained an adopted daughter, and she will enjoy everything she's entitled to.
But she chose to dig her own grave.
Song Zhaodi was filled with trepidation, unsure of where to put her hands. The truth of what happened back then seemed to have surfaced during their conversation, and her palms involuntarily became sweaty. She could only awkwardly wipe them on her trouser legs.
"I really didn't expect that."
She smiled, but a wave of sadness washed over her amidst her joy.
Xie Zhiyan and Shu Ying were from a completely different world from her. They were tolerant, knowledgeable, and learned, and could even contribute to the country.
But she is nothing.
She and Xie Wanying were not even from the same world. Xie Wanying had received higher education, seen the world, and spoke eloquently. Although her personality was not likable, she had a sense of superiority in her bones.
Song Zhaodi looked down at her rough hands. She used to do farm work in the countryside, and her hands would crack in the winter. If it weren't for Shu Ying's insistence on using cold cream recently, her skin would probably be even rougher.
She was a little unsure of herself and asked Shu Ying cautiously, "Yingying, do you really think I'm worthy of being their daughter?"
The Xie family is a highly educated family, and all the children are outstanding. However, she only has an elementary school education. Song Zhaodi is unsure if she is the daughter they want. She has not grown up to be the way they want her to be.
She doesn't even like her current timid and hesitant demeanor.
Shu Ying was taken aback, not expecting that these were her concerns, and couldn't help but laugh.
“Sister Song, Mom and Dad are very good people. They wouldn’t think that way. You are the victim yourself. If you really were Xie’s daughter, they would love you even more. Besides, you’ve suffered a lot over the years. Although there are some things you can’t do, most of the things you can do are things that we can’t do either. You can grow so many fruits and vegetables from a tiny seed. At least I can’t do that. You do all the cooking and housework at home every day. You’re just as capable.”
