Chapter 20 Steamed Fish

The steamed fish on the table had been removed, though Yang's mother disliked it; it was a fish she had watched grow up.

I couldn't help but ask out of concern.

Wen Ying also said apologetically in a low voice:

"I'm sorry, I didn't know you were pregnant and couldn't stand the smell of fish."

Yang Jinchu, sitting next to him, impatiently interrupted loudly, "What nonsense are you talking about?"

Wen Ying stared at him in surprise, her eyes wide, as if she were startled, or perhaps she didn't recognize him at all.

She had never seen Yang Jinchu so unsettled and so rude.

Upon seeing this, Yang's mother first scolded Yang Jinchu.

To ease the tension and avoid awkwardness, he explained in a slow voice.

"I just casually mentioned these symptoms, wondering if you were pregnant, and misled Wen Ying. Yangyang, don't take it to heart. Wen Ying is meeting you for the first time and didn't know you couldn't stand the smell of fish."

Chu Wuyang apologized for affecting everyone, and the matter was dropped.

Just moments ago, Wen Ying had been so lively, but now she was looking down, gripping her chopsticks tightly, and seemed somewhat restless.

Realizing he had been too harsh, Yang Jinchu picked up the soup bowl beside her and ladled out a bowl of Poria and Chinese Yam soup. His voice returned to its usual gentle and mellow tone.

"It's been raining a lot in Haicheng lately, and the weather is unbearably humid and hot. You also look rather listless. Drinking more soup will help dispel the dampness."

Wen Ying's eyes were slightly red as she slowly took the soup. A little joy began to well up inside her, and she automatically forgot about the unpleasant little struggle from before. While drinking the soup, she softly complained and asked:

"The weather in Haicheng is really unpredictable, it's humid, hot, and sultry all at once. When are we going back to Australia?"

Yang Jinchu, who was still serving her food, patiently replied:

"You can go back with my parents in a couple of days."

Wen Ying concealed her disappointment and question.

"And what about you? Aren't you coming with us?"

Yang Jinchu put down his chopsticks and looked at her.

"I'm not sure, I still have work to do."

Wen Ying wanted to say that she could stay and help him too, but Yang's mother, listening from the side, couldn't help but interrupt:

"What kind of job do you have? You... why did you give up a perfectly good school job to build an orphanage?"

Yang's father, who hadn't said much until now, stopped his somewhat agitated wife.

"Jin Chu will know what she's doing, so don't worry about it."

Yang's mother, cornered, ignored the father and son, and spent the rest of the dinner chatting with Wen Ying.

Chu Wuyang remained silent until the very end of the meal.
