Chapter 182 Hanging Up the Phone

Jing Min paused noticeably on the other end of the phone, as if deliberately adjusting his emotions, before asking calmly:

"Why aren't you asleep yet? You're coughing, are you feeling unwell, or are you sick?"

His voice was deep and gentle, with a hint of barely perceptible concern.

Chu Wuyang's heart skipped a beat, and she felt inexplicably guilty.

She coughed lightly, feigning composure, and replied in a casual tone:

"No, I was just about to go to sleep when you called."

She paused for a moment, then added.

"I just choked on some water. I was surprised you called so late. You're not sick."

Jing Min on the other end of the phone chuckled softly, his expression ambiguous, and then slowly said:

"An accident? How could it be an accident? Isn't it normal for me to call you?"

"It would be abnormal not to fight!"

Chu Wuyang's heart skipped a beat, but he maintained his relaxed tone and smiled:

“It’s not surprising that you’re calling, but it is surprising that you’re calling at this time. It’s several hours later where you are than in China, so you should be even more tired.”

She paused, then asked casually:

"So, is there something you need?"

She was telling the truth; after all, this wasn't the first time Jingmin had gone on a business trip.

He used to be very considerate and thoughtful, always calculating the time difference carefully, and if he finished work too late...

He would rather call the housekeeper to inquire about her situation than disturb her directly.

However, today, unusually, he made this call late at night.

There was a moment of silence on the other end of the phone.

A moment later,

Jingmin said softly:

"Really? Then I forgot about the time difference."

His tone carried a hint of nonchalance, as if he didn't care about her speculation, and he slowly added:

"It's past my bedtime, but... I don't feel that sleepy."

He paused, his voice lowering slightly, as if testing the waters.

Are you going to sleep?

Chu Wuyang glanced down at the time; it was indeed late, already past midnight.

But Jingmin's tone didn't indicate any intention to hang up; instead, it seemed as if he was intentionally or unintentionally delaying, as if he simply wanted to chat with her for a while.

She frowned slightly, a hint of doubt rising in her heart, but she still spoke naturally:

"Yes, it's about time to go to sleep."

"You have to sleep whether you want to or not, it's bad for your health."

A low chuckle came from the phone, tinged with a hint of mockery.

"You care about me that much?"

Before he could finish speaking, he suddenly blurted out another sentence.

I didn't drink tonight.

Chu Wuyang was taken aback, thinking he had misunderstood something.

She assumed he was drunk when he suddenly called her, so she casually went along with what he said:

"It's good not to drink alcohol. Drinking is bad for your health. Even if you have to drink, drink less."

The other end of the phone suddenly went silent.

Silence spread.

For a moment, Chu Wuyang couldn't even tell if he was still on the other end of the phone.

Just then, a new message popped up on the screen—

Yunyang:

“I just mentioned it, but he seemed a little hesitant and said he needed to make a phone call.”

"I guess it was called for you."

"Judging from his expression, he still cares about you; he seems quite guilty."

"I think if you call a halt now, he'll definitely agree to anything."

Chu Wuyang stared at the message, her fingertips unconsciously tightening, her brows furrowing almost imperceptibly.

Guilt?

Men do indeed feel guilty towards their wives before they do something wrong.

But it's impossible to stop such a good opportunity.

If he remains consumed by guilt, wouldn't that affect the progress?

So, Yunyang meant—was she implying that she should add fuel to the fire?

Chu Wuyang let out a soft breath, feeling inexplicably irritated.

She felt guilty just now because she was scheming against the man.

A man feels guilty and ashamed because he has done something to betray his wife.

Since we've already done it, what's there to feel guilty about?

She had nothing to feel guilty about, so she tightened her grip on her phone and couldn't help but mutter something under her breath.

"This is so annoying..."

She turned her attention back to the phone and called out a few times in the same tone—

"Jingmin, Jingmin? Are you still listening?"

On the other end of the phone, the man seemed to let out a soft sigh of relief.

I could hear his shallow breathing through the receiver, with faint traces of smoke.

"I'm listening!"

His voice was low and hoarse, as if he were smoking, and there was a faint sense of fatigue in his breath.

Chu Wuyang glanced at the pitch-black night outside the window, took a deep breath, and said in a calm and gentle tone:

"It's getting late, you should go to sleep."

"Focus on your work, don't worry about me, and you don't need to report to me."

"I believe you 100%".

There was silence on the other end of the phone.

A few seconds later,

Jing Min suddenly chuckled softly, a hint of indescribable emotion lurking within his laughter, and asked in return:

"You trust me that much?"

Chu Wuyang didn't even think, and almost blurted it out—

"Definitely!"

The phone went silent again.

After a long while, Jing Min finally gave a low "hmm," his tone stiff, seemingly revealing a hint of disappointment.

"Go to sleep early. I've been very busy lately, so I might not be able to contact you often."

Chu Wuyang's brow twitched slightly, and she was about to say, "It's nothing, you..."

beep--

The call has been disconnected.

She stared blankly at the now-off screen, stunned for a few seconds, blinked, and even thought she was seeing things—
