Zhong Yuxiu returned carrying a bamboo basket filled with bright red eggs. She said cheerfully, "Mingyue, I just went home, distributed the red eggs, and called home to tell you that the baby was born. Your grandfather was laughing so hard he was coughing on the phone."
The Lu family has four generations living under one roof, and this child is the only boy in the new generation of the family, which makes him special.
Gu Mingyue leaned against the pillow, looking at the red eggs in the bamboo basket. Faint red paper imprints remained on the eggshells. Her heart warmed: "Did I make him worry?"
"No." Zhong Yuxiu sat on the edge of the bed and reached out to touch the child's face.
“I told him that you and the child are both safe and sound, and that he could rest assured. I said that once you are discharged from the hospital, we will take the child back to her home to see her. Your grandmother also said that she wants to make a tiger-head hat for the child herself, saying that it can ward off evil spirits and ensure safety.”
Just then, the door was pushed open, and Lu Wanwan and He Xiao came in. "Sister-in-law, where's the baby?"
As soon as Lu Wanwan entered the room, she looked around and saw the child in Zhong Yuxiu's arms. She immediately leaned over and whispered, "Oh my, it's so small, and its skin is so tender."
She carefully extended her finger and touched the child's little hand, and the child suddenly grabbed her fingertip.
Lu Wanwan's eyes crinkled with laughter: "Brother, sister-in-law, look, he's grabbing me, he's so cute."
He Xiao also came over, looked at the child's wrinkled little face, and said with a smile, "He looks like Lu Lin, with bright eyes. He'll definitely be a clever boy in the future."
Zhong Yuxiu handed the child to Lu Wanwan and showed her how to support the child's head: "Be careful, support it here."
Lu Wanwan held the child, her body taut, but she couldn't stop smiling: "Of course, the child is our precious darling. I'll come and take care of him every day and make him little clothes."
Lu Wanwan's body was as stiff as a bamboo pole, and she even breathed very softly, afraid that she might bump the little one in her arms if she moved.
She looked down at the child's face and whispered, "My sweetheart, I'm Aunt Wanwan."
As soon as she finished speaking, the child in her arms suddenly moved. The child opened its eyes a crack, and its little mouth slightly parted, and it actually smiled at Lu Wanwan. The child even waved its little arm as if to say hello.
"Oh, he smiled! He smiled at me."
Lu Wanwan was so excited that her voice rose, and she hurriedly called everyone to come and see, "Brother, sister-in-law, Mom, look, the child is smiling, he recognizes me."
Afraid of disturbing the child, she dared not raise her hand, but could only tilt her head, her bright eyes fixed on the child's face, her mouth almost stretched to her ears in a wide grin.
Lu Lin quickly moved closer, and Zhong Yuxiu also put down the cloth in her hand and surrounded them.
The child seemed to know that everyone was watching him. After laughing, he babbled twice and rubbed his little head against Lu Wanwan's chest.
"She actually smiled." Lu Lin chuckled and patted Lu Wanwan's shoulder. "Our Wanwan is so lucky; the first smile of her child was given to you."
Zhong Yuxiu couldn't stop smiling: "This child must know that his aunt loves him. Wanwan, from now on you will be the child's favorite aunt."
Lu Wanwan held the child and gently rocked him, humming an off-key nursery rhyme.
As the child listened, his little eyes slowly closed again, a faint smile still lingering on his lips.
Lu Lin suddenly clapped his hands: "By the way, Mingyue and I are discussing giving the child a formal name, Lu Chen, and a nickname, Chenchen."
Gu Mingyue smiled and nodded, reaching out to touch the pom-pom on the tiger-head hat: "He was born this morning, just as the first rays of sunlight shone into the ward. I was hoping he would be as bright and energetic as the morning sun."
"Chenchen, that's a good name."
Lu Wanwan was holding Chenchen and humming a nursery rhyme when the little guy suddenly twisted his body and burst into tears.
Zhong Yuxiu quickly came over and reached out to touch Chenchen's diaper: "It's dry, no pee, it must be hungry."
As soon as he finished speaking, He Xiao stood up as if he had been pricked by a needle, picked up his coat from the table and said, "I remembered that there is a report in the team that I haven't filled out yet. I'll go back and deal with it first, and I'll come to see Chenchen later."
As he spoke, he hurried out of the ward, almost turning the doorknob in the wrong direction.
He knew that Gu Mingyue needed to breastfeed, and it was really inconvenient for a grown man like himself to be there.
Lu Wanwan also realized what was happening, gently rocked Chenchen in her arms, and smiled at Gu Mingyue: "Sister-in-law, I'll go with He Xiao to buy you some soft pastries so you can eat them after you finish breastfeeding."
After saying that, she picked up Chenchen and handed him to Zhong Yuxiu, then followed He Xiao out of the ward, carefully closing the door behind her.
The ward fell silent. Gu Mingyue looked at Chenchen, who was still crying in Zhong Yuxiu's arms, and reached out to hug her.
But as soon as her fingertips touched the swaddling clothes, she caught sight of Lu Lin still sitting on the chair by the bed. Her face flushed red, and she withdrew her outstretched hand, lowering her head somewhat embarrassedly: "You go out too."
Seeing this, Zhong Yuxiu quickly handed Chenchen to her and asked Lu Lin to go out for a walk, as it was inevitable that her daughter-in-law would be a little unaccustomed to feeding a child for the first time.
Lu Lin immediately stood up and picked up the thermos on the table: "I'll go pour you some warm water so you can drink it after you finish feeding."
Gu Mingyue held Chenchen and fed the child under Zhong Yuxiu's direction.
Chenchen snuggled into her arms and quickly stopped crying, her little mouth eagerly searching for milk.
The ward was quiet except for the sound of Chenchen nursing.
Gu Mingyue had just finished feeding Chenchen and gently patted his back when the ward door was gently pushed open.
Lu Lin walked in carrying a cup of warm water, with a clean handkerchief in his hand: "Finished feeding? Drink some water quickly, Mom said that breastfeeding is tiring."
He handed the water glass to Gu Mingyue, his gaze falling on Chenchen in her arms, and volunteered, "I'll pat Chenchen's back to help him burp. Mom taught me how to do it in the hallway earlier."
As she spoke, she carefully took Chenchen from Gu Mingyue's arms, letting the little guy rest on her shoulder. She supported his bottom with one hand and gently patted Chenchen's back with the other hand, which was cupped in the air.
But he was too gentle. He patted for a while, but Chenchen didn't move. Instead, she twisted her little body.
Lu Lin was a little anxious, so he increased the pressure slightly and muttered softly, "Chenchen, be good, you'll feel better after a burp."
As soon as she finished speaking, Chenchen suddenly let out a "uh" sound, and then spat out a mouthful of milk onto Lu Lin's coarse cloth jacket, leaving a wet milk stain on his shoulder.
"Oh dear." Lu Lin frantically tried to wipe it, but was afraid of touching Chenchen, so he could only stand there frozen.
Looking at the milk stains on his shoulder, and then at Chenchen, who looked completely innocent in his arms, he smiled helplessly: "You little rascal, you're always pulling this trick on your dad."
Gu Mingyue was drinking water when she saw this and couldn't help but laugh: "It's your fault for patting me too fast just now. Mom said that you should pat me gently and slowly when I burp you."
Zhong Yuxiu also pushed the door open and came in. Seeing the milk stains on Lu Lin's shoulder, she smiled and handed him a clean jacket: "I knew you would do this, so I prepared one for you. It's normal for Chenchen to spit up milk. You, as his father, will have plenty of opportunities to practice in the future."
