Chapter 3 Seeking refuge with one's childhood betrothed

Two days later, Gu Mingyue, covered in dust, stepped onto the soil of Beijing.

To avoid attracting attention, she could only eat cornbread on the train.

The first thing I did after getting off the bus was to find a guesthouse, take a nice shower, change into clean clothes, and then find the address on the letter with my wicker trunk.

"Comrade, I really can't let you in."

The young soldier looked at the girl in front of him with difficulty, unable to bear saying no.

But the thought of the sharp eyes on the other end of the phone sent a shiver down my spine.

The family compound was located in a remote area, and they didn't encounter many cars along the way. Even the directions were pointed out by locals. Gu Mingyue walked for an hour before finally finding the place.

The original owner was delicate and weak. Walking for long periods of time made the soles of her feet hard, and her little toe was burning and tended to blister.

Her hair was disheveled and fell across her forehead, her face was pale, and the carefully planned outfit she had put on before leaving the house now only looked disheveled.

Thinking of her miserable state, tears welled up in her eyes, and she looked so pitiful that one couldn't help but feel sorry for her.

This tearful, pear-blossom-like appearance caught someone's eye, and for some reason, a tightness gripped their heart.

When Li Ming returned after retrieving his things, he saw his good friend staring blankly at a girl not far away, and a smile crept onto his lips.

"What? You've taken a fancy to that girl? Should I go and find out for you?"

Seeing the other person's dark eyes looking over, he shuddered and quickly begged for forgiveness: "Alright, it's my fault for being nosy. The old man should be back soon, let's go home first."

"Um."

A sound escaped the backseat, eliciting a sigh from Li Ming. If only his good brother hadn't gotten into that mess...

Sigh, never mind.

Li Ming snapped out of his thoughts and stepped on the gas, driving into the family compound.

The jeep sped past, and Gu Mingyue glanced at it enviously; she really wanted to get in too.

“Young lady, no one answers the phone at Commander Lu’s home, so I can’t let you in without permission.”

There were instructions from above. The young soldier sympathized with Gu Mingyue for coming from afar, but he couldn't make the decision to let her in on his own.

Seeing the other person's reddened eyes, I felt a little soft-hearted and turned around to get a stool for her to sit on and rest.

"Thank you, comrade, you're a very kind person."

Gu Mingyue smiled gently at him, her eyes crinkling into crescents, making her appear even more captivating.

The young soldier's dark face flushed red, and his ears burned as he replied, "You're welcome."

Gu Mingyue kept praying that the Lu family would return soon, as it wasn't right for them to keep waiting outside.

Perhaps heaven heard her heart's desire. Just as Gu Mingyue was nodding and dozing off, a voice rang in her ears, instantly waking her up.

"Commander Lu, you're back."

lu?

Which "lu"?

Is it the Lu she's thinking of?

Gu Mingyue quickly stood up.

A couple stood not far away, their hair slightly gray. The man stood there with a vigorous posture, looking like a soldier.

The woman had a round face that exuded kindness.

Gu Mingyue was certain that this was the person she was looking for, and tentatively asked, "Grandpa Lu, Grandma Lu?"

Grandma looked over in confusion, and seeing it was a little girl, asked, "Who are you?"

Gu Mingyue's nose tingled, her eyes reddened, and the tears she had been holding back immediately fell. "I am Gu Mingyue."

"Bright moon?"

As Grandma watched the familiar face slowly overlap with the figure in her memory, her eyes gradually brightened.

Noticing the suspicious looks from the people around her, Gu Mingyue took out the token.

Seeing the jade pendant in her hand and the marriage certificate they had written themselves, the two finally dared to confirm that the person in front of them was Gu Mingyue.

Xia Huiying burst into tears of joy, tightly holding Gu Mingyue's hand. Feeling her thin wrist, she felt even more heartache.

"Good child, it's really Mingyue. Why didn't you call? We could have come to pick you up."

The little girl was carrying a small suitcase, barely big enough to hold a few clothes. Thinking about what she had mentioned on the phone, she cursed her heartless parents.

Look at her pale face, she's practically skin and bones. The Gu family has no worries about food or clothing, yet they've raised their daughter like this; it's truly a mistake.

Xia Huiying felt extremely distressed.

"Let's go home."

Lu Limin was initially worried that someone might impersonate him, but his attitude changed immediately when he saw the marriage certificate that Gu Mingyue presented.

"Good child, you've worked hard. From now on, this is your home, and no one will dare to touch you."

What a domineering CEO's words were, in Gu Mingyue's ears, the most reassuring words.

She blinked and wiped away her tears with the back of her hand. "Thank you, Grandpa and Grandma."

When the young guard at the gate saw that Gu Mingyue really knew Commander Lu, he secretly rejoiced that he hadn't chased her away earlier.

Once inside the family compound, Gu Mingyue kept her eyes fixed ahead, and apart from occasionally responding to Xia Huiying's words, she did nothing wrong.

Lu Limin nodded silently. The Gu family was, after all, a prestigious family, and the children they raised would not be bad.

Thinking of the brat at home, her eyebrows furrowed involuntarily.

They soon arrived at a two-story building with a jeep parked in front, but Gu Mingyue didn't pay it any mind.

"There's someone at home; it must be Xiao Lin who's back."

Xia Huiying thought of her grandson's appearance, and then looked at the radiant Gu Mingyue beside her. Her heart sank, wondering what the future held for the two of them.

"Greetings, Commander!"

Upon seeing his old superior, Li Ming immediately stood up and saluted.

"Xiao Ming is here too. I've told you so many times, you don't need to be so polite at home."

Li Ming's family also lives in the compound, and he has a good relationship with his grandson. The child is good in every way, except that he is too concerned about manners. He has told his grandson countless times that he doesn't need to be a stranger at home.

Li Ming smiled and said, "I must maintain proper manners. I will definitely change next time."

Lu Limin had heard this countless times, so he simply let him be.

"Hasn't Xiao Lin come back?"

Xia Huiying was puzzled when she didn't see her grandson.

Li Ming noticed the woman next to him, and his pupils contracted. Wasn't this the woman they had met at the gate?

Could it be that they have some connection with the Lu family?

He subtly looked away and answered Xia Huiying's question.

"Lu Lin went back to his room to change his clothes. He should be done soon."

Lu Lin?

Gu Mingyue caught the name; although it wasn't mentioned in the marriage certificate, she felt that this was the person she had never met as her childhood sweetheart.

As she was lost in her imagination, she heard the sound of wheels rolling. Looking in the direction of the sound, she saw a man standing before her.

He sat in a wheelchair, wearing a comfortable white cotton shirt and black trousers.

Even in a wheelchair, the man's tall and robust physique was still evident, his broad shoulders making his shirt look full.

He had a thin face, deep-set eyes, a high and straight nose, and a cold and aloof expression that made people afraid to look him in the eye.

"Grandpa and Grandma, you're back."

His gaze inadvertently swept over Gu Mingyue, then he quickly lowered his eyelids, concealing the deep emotions within his eyes.

Li Ming tried hard to suppress the upturned corners of his mouth. His good brother had been stubborn just now, but now that the girl had come knocking on his door, let's see what he does.

He really wanted to watch the excitement, but given the current situation, it was clear that the Lu family had something to discuss, and as an outsider, it was inappropriate for him to be present. So he quickly got up and said goodbye.
