When Lu Lin was at work, Gu Mingyue had some free time. The other two rooms in the house were empty, and she wanted to convert one of them into a study.
She could draw there on weekdays, and Lu Lin could also have a place to work.
Gu Mingyue chose the middle room as her study. When she went in, she sighed deeply; the room was cleaner than her face.
At first glance, there's nothing there; it's almost too minimalist.
When Lu Lin got off work, Gu Mingyue mentioned to him, "I want to build a study."
Lu Lin had no objection. In addition to their bedroom, one room in the house would be used as a study, and the other as a guest room, so that there would be a place for guests to stay when they came to visit.
"Okay, I'll have someone go and ask around for carpentry shops nearby."
Gu Mingyue also said, "Okay, I'll go ask Sister Qin if she knows any carpenters nearby."
Soon, both of them found out the news.
"Sister-in-law Qin said that Grandpa Miao from Xiaohai Village nearby is good at working."
Sister-in-law Qin's exact words were: "It's quick and good, and the price is fair."
Lu Lin: "What a coincidence, I also said that Grandpa Miao did a good job."
"Then let's find some time to go and take a look. If it's suitable, we still have a lot of things to add."
Gu Mingyue counted on her fingers. Besides a desk, she also wanted a shelf to put things on, and it would be great if there was a wardrobe in the master bedroom.
"Let's get everything done at once, so we don't have to add more later."
Lu Lin: "I'll listen to you."
Seeing that he still had a smile on his face, Gu Mingyue helplessly put her arms around his neck, "Why do you agree with everything I say?"
Lu Lin leaned closer to her face and kissed her deeply. "You're the mistress of our house, we'll do whatever you say."
Gu Mingyue kneaded his face like dough, "Stop flattering me."
Both of them were action-oriented, and the next day, when Lu Lin was taking a break at noon, the two of them rode their bicycles to Xiaohai Village.
Grandpa Miao's house is easy to remember. There's a big locust tree in front of his house, so you almost don't need to ask. You can see the place as soon as you enter the village.
After entering the village, Gu Mingyue jumped off the back seat. "Let's walk there."
There was no cushion on the back seat of the bicycle, and on such a short journey, her bottom felt like it was about to be split in eight pieces.
"I'm sorry, honey, we'll put a cushion in when we get home."
Lu Lin said guiltily, "You ride your bike back, and I'll run back."
Gu Mingyue wasn't the type to rush to refuse or make herself suffer; she would be a fool not to enjoy good fortune.
"Okay, let's go find Grandpa Miao first."
Xiaohai Village is located near the coastline of Changshan Island, and is situated between the residential compound and the village.
You can see seabirds flying by in the village, soaring through the sky with their wings spread.
The two arrived at Grandpa Miao's house. The gate was slightly closed, and the courtyard wall was not high. Standing outside, one could see inside by standing on tiptoe.
This house height is normal by today's standards. Some houses are only surrounded by simple fences, making them completely visible from the outside.
Sometimes when we eat meat at home, we don't dare to bring it out, because if we're not careful, it will fall into the eyes of someone with ulterior motives.
Compared to the low wall, Gu Mingyue felt that the walls of the family compound were better, at least she didn't have to worry about others standing outside peeping.
Is Grandpa Miao home?
Lu Lin shouted loudly into the room.
Who is it?
A strong voice rang out, and soon an elderly man of about sixty years old appeared. He was wearing a faded short-sleeved shirt, his hair was gray but he was in good spirits, his back was straight and his steps were steady and powerful.
Grandpa Miao opened the door and saw the two people in front of him. "Who are you?"
"Uncle Miao, we're here to make something."
Hearing what Gu Mingyue said, Grandpa Miao made way for them to come in.
What do you want to make?
"There's a desk, a cabinet, and some small items; they're all here."
Lu Lin handed over the list they had prepared in advance.
Grandpa Miao had attended primary school and knew a few characters, so he quickly finished reading the contents of the list.
“These things are not difficult. First, choose what kind of wood you want. Different types of wood will have different prices.”
"Uncle Miao, this is our first time here and we don't know much about wood. Could you tell us what kind of wood you have so we can make a decision? It's a new house, so we naturally want wood that will last a long time."
Gu Mingyue was speaking from the heart. Neither she nor Lu Lin knew anything about the specific types of wood, so it was better to leave it all to Grandpa Miao.
Sister-in-law Qin said that Uncle Miao was a very honest man, and they could ask him anything without worry.
When Grandpa Miao saw the clothes Lu Lin was wearing, he guessed that they were from a nearby military camp, and his expression relaxed a little.
"Alright, this old man will help you choose. Don't worry, I'm not bluffing."
If it weren't for the fact that the two younger people were polite, Grandpa Miao wouldn't have offered to help them.
The two novices followed Grandpa Miao around, looking at the different materials, and finally chose beech wood because it was reasonably priced and a common material for making desks and wardrobes.
Once the style and price were agreed upon, the matter was settled.
"It will take about a week to get it done, but you'll need to pay a five-dollar deposit first."
Gu Mingyue: "I understand."
She handed over the deposit and said, "Uncle Miao, I'm sorry to trouble you. The time frame doesn't matter, but the product must be of high quality."
Grandpa Miao patted his chest and assured them that he would make it perfectly straight.
With his words, Gu Mingyue finally felt relieved.
As mentioned before, Lu Lin ran back on the way.
The pairing of the two even attracted curious glances from the guards on duty.
"Did Mingyue go out for a stroll?"
Qin Hongmei saw Gu Mingyue and greeted her warmly.
Gu Mingyue braked suddenly, almost crashing into a tree because she wasn't quick enough to react. She was still not very skilled at riding this bicycle from the 1970s.
Fortunately, Lu Lin was right behind him and pulled him back just before they crashed into the tree.
Looking at the large tree so close at hand, Gu Mingyue breathed a sigh of relief.
Because the sudden braking had messed up his hair, Qin Hongmei rushed over to help him get down.
"It's alright, sister-in-law, I didn't mean to make you laugh," Gu Mingyue said with an embarrassed smile.
Qin Hongmei waved her hand and said, "What kind of joke is this? When I was learning to ride a bike, it was much harder than this. I bumped and bruised a lot. You've learned in just two or three days and you ride much better than I did in a week."
"It's also my fault for talking to you earlier and asking you to split the deal, otherwise this wouldn't have happened."
Gu Mingyue laughed and said, "Let's not talk about each other anymore."
After this little incident, Gu Mingyue didn't dare to ride anymore. Since she had already arrived at her doorstep, she simply pushed the bike back.
Lu Lin followed behind and noticed some red marks on her trouser legs.
Upon closer inspection, there was a scratch, likely caused by braking earlier.
"Wait here, I'll go get some medicine to apply to you."
"It's alright, nothing serious. You can get through this on your own."
If it had been discovered any later, the scar would probably have already scabbed over.
