In the evening, Gu Mingyue was preparing dinner in the kitchen when a familiar voice suddenly called out from the courtyard gate: "Comrade Gu, are you home?"
She got up and opened the door, only to find Lu Lin's comrade-in-arms from the same unit, who was clutching a note in his hand.
"Sister-in-law, Brother Lu asked me to pass on a message to you: the mission was successfully completed, and he will be able to return to the team and go home in the next couple of days."
His comrade smiled and handed him the note, saying, "He was afraid you'd worry, so he specifically asked me to bring you the message as soon as possible."
Gu Mingyue took the note, her fingertips trembling slightly. The paper was written in Lu Lin's familiar, strong handwriting, with only a few short sentences: "Mingyue, don't worry, go home today."
She read it twice, her eyes welling up with tears. She turned around, put the note away, and slowly walked to the window, gazing at the sea in the distance.
"Baby, can you hear me? Daddy's coming home." She lowered her head and gently pressed her hand against her lower abdomen, her voice so tender it could melt your heart.
"When Dad comes back, let him see the little bunny we made, and then let him see the little dress Mom drew, okay?"
As the evening breeze blew in through the window, Gu Mingyue gazed in the direction of the military camp in the distance, her anticipation spreading quietly like vines.
I imagine that in just two more days, this warm and cozy little home will welcome the person I miss the most.
On the day Lu Lin returned to the team, he didn't send a message in advance, wanting to give Gu Mingyue a surprise.
He was covered in dust from his journey, and as soon as he reached the entrance of the family compound, he heard familiar laughter coming from his own yard.
He gently pushed open the half-closed courtyard gate, and the scene before him made him stop in his tracks.
"This blue top with a pink trim would definitely look good."
Xia Qinghe's scissors made a "snip" sound as Lin Hui helped stretch the fabric.
Gu Mingyue would occasionally point to the drawing and add a few words, a faint smile on her lips.
Lu Lin stood at the door, looking at the tenderness that his wife couldn't hide in her eyes, and the fatigue of the past few days instantly disappeared.
Perhaps sensing the movement at the door, Gu Mingyue looked up and, upon seeing who it was, gently placed the sketch in her hand on her lap.
"Lu Lin?" She stood up in surprise, her eyes instantly reddening.
Lu Lin strode into the house, pulled her into his arms, and said in a hoarse yet tender voice, "I'm back, Mingyue."
Xia Qinghe and Lin Hui exchanged a smile and quietly led Niannian outside the courtyard.
Gu Mingyue looked up at him, a faint smile in her eyes, and said in a gentle voice, "There's something I need to tell you, I'm pregnant."
"Pregnant?" Lu Lin's hand froze in mid-air, his tiredness instantly replaced by surprise.
He subconsciously lowered his voice, tentatively looking at her lower abdomen, "Really? You're not lying to me?"
Seeing Gu Mingyue nod with a smile, his Adam's apple bobbed, and he suddenly reached out and carefully pulled her into his arms, his movements as gentle as if he were afraid of breaking a precious treasure.
Why didn't you send me a message sooner?
"I wanted to wait for you to come back so I could tell you in person." Gu Mingyue leaned on his shoulder, and could clearly feel his tense yet restrained strength.
Lu Lin lowered his head, his gaze falling on her still-flat stomach. His fingertips hovered there for a long time before he gently placed them on her belly, his voice hoarse with disbelief: "We're having a baby?"
Gu Mingyue held his hand and placed it on her lower abdomen, smiling as she hummed in agreement.
Lu Lin repeatedly stroked her lower abdomen, the surprise in his eyes gradually turning into a burning tenderness, and even his voice softened.
"From now on, I'll take care of all the housework. You just need to take good care of yourself."
Seeing the dark circles under his eyes, Gu Mingyue felt a pang of heartache and gently touched the corner of his eye.
"Did you not get enough rest on the way to the mission? Sit down and rest, I'll go heat up some chicken soup for you."
Lu Lin took her hand and wouldn't let her get up: "Don't bother, I just want to stay with you."
He pulled Gu Mingyue to sit down on the stool, his fingertips repeatedly stroking the back of her hand, his tone full of guilt, "I've made you worry about the family all by yourself these past few days, and you're pregnant too, I'm so sorry for making you suffer."
Gu Mingyue shook her head and leaned on his shoulder: "With my sisters-in-law helping me, I'm not tired at all. But you, look at your eyes, you need to take good care of them when you get back."
She remembered the chicken soup still warm in the casserole, which she had specially prepared that morning according to a nourishing recipe. She quickly got up and said, "The chicken soup is still hot. I'll go get a bowl. Drink it while it's hot."
Lu Lin was dirty, but knowing his wife was clean, he took a quick shower without being reminded.
After I came out of the shower, there was already a bowl of chicken noodle soup on the table. "You're done showering, come and have some food."
The place I went to this time was quite remote. I couldn't eat or sleep well. Only after a bowl of hot soup noodles did I feel alive again.
He looked down at Gu Mingyue's lower abdomen, carefully reached out and covered it, then picked up the drawing on the table.
Her fingertips brushed over the delicate patterns on the little clothes, her eyes filled with emotion: "Are these all for the baby?"
Gu Mingyue nodded, leaned on his shoulder, and listened to his steady heartbeat, feeling a sense of reassurance and warmth in her heart.
Seeing that he had finished eating and was still trying to talk to her, she pulled him towards the bedroom without saying a word.
"Your dark circles are practically drooping down to your chin, you need to lie down for a while."
Lu Lin couldn't persuade her otherwise, so he obediently lay down on the bed.
"Wife, you should come too."
Seeing his pitiful eyes, Gu Mingyue's heart softened.
Then she took off her shoes, pulled the thin blanket over him gently, bent down to tuck him in, and her fingertips accidentally touched his tired cheek, which made her feel a pang of heartache.
"Go to sleep, the children and I are here."
Perhaps hearing her voice, Lu Lin frowned slightly in his sleep, then relaxed, a faint smile on his lips.
Gu Mingyue lay beside him, gently patting the blanket while gazing at his sleeping face. Sunlight streamed through the gaps in the curtains, illuminating the two of them. The room was quiet, filled only with the sound of their steady breathing, a gentle and peaceful atmosphere.
When Lu Lin woke up, the sunlight outside the window was already setting in the west.
He had just moved his body when he noticed a small figure curled up beside him, breathing lightly, clearly having accidentally fallen asleep while keeping him company.
He felt a warmth in his heart, but then his nerves tensed up instantly, afraid that any sudden movement would wake her.
Slowly lifting the blanket, I carefully reached out and gently lifted her up in my arms.
Gu Mingyue was fast asleep, only letting out a soft moan when he picked her up, before snuggling closer to him.
Lu Lin looked down at the faint blue shadows under her eyes, and gently placed her on the inside of the bed.
He then turned around and rummaged through the wardrobe for a soft pillow, carefully placing it behind her back to make her more comfortable.
After doing all this, he sat down on the edge of the bed, gently brushing away the stray hairs from her forehead with his fingertips. His gaze fell on her lower abdomen, then returned to her peaceful sleeping face, his eyes filled with tenderness.
He sat there quietly, watching over his sleeping wife and children on the bed, even his breathing was soft, for fear of disturbing this moment of peace and tranquility.
